A small gathering had a big meaning last weekend. About a dozen community members gathered to honor Sherry Wieckowski, who passed away from cancer last year. Wieckowski was the barber in Thompson Falls for nearly 30 years. The park next to the barber shop was commemorated in her honor on Saturday. Forty-seven boats converged on the Noxon Reservoir last weekend for the annual tri-state bass tournament, sponsored by the Clark Fork Bass Anglers. Sourdough Village was more like a metropolis Saturday as the annual Wild Coyote Days celebration took place at the bar and restaurant along Prospect Creek Road near Thompson Falls. UPDATE: On Tuesday, crews began profile grinding on the Thompson Falls Main Street project. Grinding the newly paved surface is in order to address the quality issues identified by MDT. According to MDT, the grinding process will take two or more weeks. During this time, parking along Main Street will be closed in sections. The Kootenai National Forest is imposing Stage I fire restrictions, which will go into effect 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 29. Sanders County will also move to Stage I restrictions on Saturday. KNF stated in a press release that fire danger has been rated "very high" as temperatures in the 90s persist in the local area. The restrictions will be in effect until further notice. Construction on a project to rehabilitate the bridge at Highways 382 and 200 in Perma will begin later this month. Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) held public meetings last week to inform residents and stakeholders about the project. The 635-foot bridge on Highway 382 was built in the 1960s. Plenty of us are torn up that Main Street is torn up. The approximately mile-long project is a needed one, though. Enhanced safety features, smoother surfaces and ADA-compliant sidewalks will make downtown a better place for residents and visitors, especially those using strollers, delivery dollies, wheelchairs, canes or any other assisted-walking devices.
