Sheehan told the fair board at last Wednesday's meeting that she's waiting for a bid from...
Mayor Joel Banham has spent the last week going through files and familiarizing himself with his newly appointed duties. He's no stranger to the workings of council, since he'd been a council member of Ward 2 for seven years, but he said he was nervous with his first council meeting in the executive position. "But that comes with any new responsibility. Just taking things one day at a time and learning as I go," he said later. Nearly 20 people attended the council meeting, including former...

It was the first square dance of the year for the Montana Mavericks at the Plains Paradise Senior Center Saturday and the floor was filled with colorful twirls, precise moves and graceful swaying. The traditional square dance apparel is normally western wear of colorful petticoats, circular skirts, denim jeans, and long sleeve plaid shirts, but the Montana Mavericks dance this night wasn't the typical square dance style - it was the Roaring 20s theme - and the dance floor was filled with the...

by Ed Moreth The Christmas spirit usually comes from the heart and doesn't involve a lot of thinking, reasoning or competitive activity, even with participants with names like "Rudolf," "Grinch," "Elf" and "Nutcracker." The last day of school at Plains on Friday was only a half day, but it came with fun with brain power and athletic prowess for the annual Brain Bash contest to signal the coming of the school's Christmas vacation. It was especially fulfilling for team "Elf," which chalked up...
Santa Claus, who dabbles in law enforcement in his spare time, took time to make inquiries about the naughtiness and nicety qualities of numerous children in downtown Plains Saturday. Father Christmas was part of the Winter Stroll and Scavenger Hunt in Plains, where more than a dozen businesses participated in the special annual holiday event. The winners of the scavenger hunt in the adult category were Janet Brandon, Amy Hill and her sister, Ashley Hill. For the children's class, it was...

The five girls of the choir - senior Abigail Wessley, sophomore Maddie Carter, junior Kaylynn Boes, junior Kennedy Starika, and sophomore Randie Kilgore - sang 11 Christmas songs, a cappella style, for the "Carols in the Park"...

The school has featured the Polar Express train and village for five years,...

As children, Kevin Meredith and his identical twin brother, Keith, loved playing tricks on people. Now as adults they were at it again last week. Keith donned an “Elf on the Shelf” costume Friday morning and positioned himself on the roof just outside the Plains School cafeteria, waving to kids and teachers as they arrived at school. “I wanted the kids to see Keith and they’d all think it’s me and then I’d come out and then they’d say who’s that?” said Kevin, the elementary school principal. Most of the passing kids immediately notic...
The idea to catch potential eye problems at an early age is a mission the Plains Lions Club has been doing for over 10 years and this week they finished the last batch of kids in the county at Plains High School. Members of the local club did the vision screenings at Plains Elementary and Junior High last Wednesday. "It is important. If you can detect a vision issue at an early age, it can be corrected with the child not needing glasses later in life," said Steve Spurr, president of the Plains...

by Ed Moreth The people of Plains probably could have used Rudolph's guiding nose on Saturday to see Santa Claus at the VFW, where he had set up a temporary workshop. Santa - played by Dave Williams of Plains - had set up shop at the one-room log schoolhouse along Railroad Street for the last four years, but this year it was moved to the VFW hall and is co-sponsored by the VFW and Joint Operation Mariposa, a nonprofit organization headed by Williams designed to help veterans in Sanders County....
