  • TIME OF THE SEASON

    Ed Moreth|Sep 29, 2022

A honey bee – Apis mellifera – collects pollen for its hive just west of Plains. "Pollen gathering is most important for feeding the larvae," said Lauren Kerzicnik, an extension specialist of entomology at Montana State University in Bozeman. Kerzicnik said that this time of year the bees are searching for fall-blooming plants as a food supply in order to prepare for the winter. "As sources are limited in spring and fall, they will be doing some important searching," added Kerzicnik, who als...

  • Horsemen, Trotters, show school spirit

    Ed Moreth|Sep 29, 2022

Showing team spirit took a lot of work and ingenuity, a good amount of paint, and loads of orange and black balloons for the building of the six floats of the Plains School Homecoming Week Parade. The students came up with the overall theme of "We Bleed Orange and Black," though some classes added their own sub theme to their floats. Students from seventh grade to seniors took some three hours to put together their floats for the annual parade Friday morning in the school's parking lots. For the...

    Ed Moreth|Sep 29, 2022

The actual Olympics are not likely to have the events of "Hungry Hippo," "Powder Puff Football," or "Crazy Goggle Puzzle" incorporated in its competition, but they made for a fun time on the Plains High School football field Friday afternoon last week. The events were part of the annual Homecoming Week's Horsemen Olympics, a competition of seven different games between the four high school classes held on the football field. Each event had between two to 14 students and most were a combination...

  • Fair board reviews public feedback

    Ed Moreth|Sep 22, 2022

This year's fair had some minor problems, but overall it went well, said Sanders County Fair Commission Chairman Randy Woods, who spent much of the week roaming the grounds and helping in various capacities, whether it was answering questions in the office, directing foot traffic or running the water truck for events. "We're still learning and with more people coming we're still learning, but now we need to polish the turd," said Woods at the fair board annual recap meeting at the fairgrounds...

    Ed Moreth|Sep 22, 2022

The new Plains sewage treatment plant is getting closer to completion and might be operational by the end of October, said Mayor Dan Rowan, who visits the site to get a progress report almost weekly. "This is huge for Plains; it's been in the works for years," said Rowan, who turned down a temporary appointment as a commissioner to see the project through. Rowan has been pleased with the progress and is hopeful the project will be done by contract deadline, which is October 16. However, Ed...

  • County soccer teams show competitive spirit

    Ed Moreth|Sep 22, 2022

It's not as intense as the World Cup, but the little soccer players of Sanders County showed much of the same competitive spirit - even when no score was being kept. Nine teams of the Clark Fork Soccer Alliance from U6 to U10 from Plains and Hot Springs faced off each other at Amundson Sports Complex at Plains Saturday morning. Only the U10 teams officially kept score, though some coaches and parents of the younger players kept track, said Ashley DePoe, coach for the Hot Springs Lil' Heat U8...

  • Plains Woman's Club seeks members

    Ed Moreth|Sep 15, 2022

The Plains Woman’s Club is looking for new members. What better way to search for new members than to put on another kind of search? The club is kicking off its annual membership drive with a scavenger hunt, said Michele Furry, who is co-chairing the event with Alana Johnson, the club secretary. “The hunt is specifically designed to introduce new residents to the different services in the community that they may not be aware of,” said Furry. The scavenger hunt will start on Saturday, Sept. 17, by picking up forms in a plastic box on the outsi...

    Ed Moreth|Sep 8, 2022

Seconds after the 4-H poultry showmanship competition ended Friday and Claire Wrobleski was told she had taken the grand champion title in the senior division, her bird, "Coyote," took flight and landed in the rafters, discharging feces matter below. Doug Horner, the rabbit barn superintendent, was able to climb up and get the bird down. Poultry Judge Gordon Cummings smiled and told her that she was lucky the bird took off after the show was officially over. He said a similar thing happened to...

    Ed Moreth|Sep 8, 2022

The Sanders County Demolition Derby was a big success with a complete sellout with 3,868 tickets sold for the three and a half-hour show. "They definitely got their money's worth, it was a great show," said Randy Woods, the fair board chairman, who received comments from dozens of people telling him it was the best derby they had seen. The fair made $121,868 on the derby alone, the biggest moneymaker of the fair. Nearly 30 cars were part of the "Carnage on the Clark Fork" Sunday evening, the...

  • Green Star horse painting joins Plains parade

    Ed Moreth|Sep 8, 2022

Having a horse in a parade is not unusual, but a green one seems to stand out, especially when it's being pulled by people. The horse is a painting done by local artists to pay tribute to Green Star Families - those who lost veteran family members to suicide - an epidemic that seems to be a constant rise in the United States, according to David Williams, who created the Green Star painting four years ago with Plains resident Hailee Steinebach. Williams is also the founder of Joint Operation...

Brooke Jackson took the reserve in the cow and calf category at the association's annual competition, this time at Sanders County Fair on Saturday. Sixteen boys and girls from in and out of Sanders County took part in the near hour-long show, including Jackson and Nick McAllister, both of Hot Springs. The two 15-year-olds both...

  • Fair Concessions Group contemplates its future

    Ed Moreth|Sep 8, 2022

This year’s Sanders County Fair might be the end of an era for a group of men, women and children who have been a popular staple at the fair. The Sanders County Concessions Group traditionally has more than a dozen food and drink booths at the annual festival, but this year it had only one, said Don Burrell, president of the nonprofit group, who added that he is disappointed in the way the fair commission has slowly pushed the organization out. Burrell said the group used to pay 20% of the take, but now have to pay 20% of the net, which is t...

Foste was helped on the first night by Devin and Ahna...

  • Plains clinic provides free health screenings

    Ed Moreth|Sep 1, 2022

Most people go to church for spiritual healing, but on Friday at the Gospel Way Church in Plains, it was more of a physical healing. It was "Free Health Screening Day" at the church, put on by the Costner Care Family Clinic. Eight people from Plains, Heron and Lewistown, Montana, ranging in age from 22 to 75 took part in the free screening session at the church building along Railroad Street on the west side of Plains. • Resident helps Plains Cemetery light flag

    Ed Moreth|Aug 25, 2022

An American flag at Plains Cemetery that has been flown improperly for several years is now getting the proper protocol, thanks to a resident who took it upon herself to correct the situation. "There's flag etiquette on how to fly the flag and it's supposed to be lit at night or taken down at dusk," said Kathy Warrington, who recently found out the flag at the military section of the cemetery was not lighted at night. She went to the cemetery board, but after getting no response decided to take...

  • Final prep under way for fair

    Ed Moreth|Aug 18, 2022

The Sanders County Fairgrounds caretaker and assistant have been working on the nearly 10 acres of lawns since April, getting them as green as possible. Kim McNeil, the fairgrounds caretaker for 30 years, helped by his wife, Margaret, have been mowing the lawn for months and for the last few weeks have been running the sprinklers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That all comes to a temporary halt in the near future when thousands of people get to enjoy the grassy fairgrounds for the 2022 fair, starting on Aug. 1, and at the same time...

The six-foot tall painting for the Veteran Suicide Awareness Journey will be starting its trek in Neah Bay, Washington, and will travel all the way to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.,...

  • Ranching a family tradition

    Ed Moreth|Aug 11, 2022

The Page Bison Ranch has hit two milestones this year. It's the ranch's 25th anniversary and it's the first time it's had more than 200 head of bison. It's sometimes a tough job - mending fences is a continuous task - but Lenny Page has no plans to quit what his father, Douglas Page, started in 1997. Lenny took over the 650-acre ranch some six miles north of Hot Springs eight years ago and he still loves doing it. "Sometimes I ask myself why I do this because it's such a headache, but they are...

  • Plains residents address mobile home ordinance

    Ed Moreth|Aug 11, 2022

Near 100-degree weather stopped an elderly Plains man from walking the streets to get signatures for a petition to eliminate a 20-year ordinance, but it didn't stop him from speaking his mind at last Monday's monthly town council meeting. "These ordinances making it illegal to use or occupy a mobile home older than 1986 are more than ridiculous; they can't even be used for a tool shed or for storage. There's something wrong with that," said Pat Killgore, who spoke for about 10 minutes during...

  • Community responds with help for Plains food bank

    Ed Moreth|Aug 4, 2022

Thanks to a recent plea for help, the Plains Community Food Bank received enough food and cash donations to sustain them for another couple of months. Though the nonprofit organization is still extremely short on meat, donations from within and outside Sanders County has given them the needed boost to help them help families in need, said Bill Alde, who heads the food bank in Plains. Donations started coming in just over a week ago after Alde asked for help through the Sanders County Ledger...

Hansen will receive a free carnival wristband for one session for her winning theme. Th...
