  • A season to remember

    John Hamilton|Oct 29, 2020

This will be a high school memory, an experience that those involved with will never forget; and will become richer with the retelling each time. Talk about an unforgettable playoff football game – a Red Devil sporting moment that will live in Noxon sports lore for many years to come – fans in Noxon will probably never tire of telling the tale of the 2020 Red Devils and how their short but sweet season memorably ended, in a blizzard of historic proportions on a field far, far away from the West End of Sanders County. Coach Bart Haflich and his...

  • Scouts stop Savage Heat

    John Hamilton|Oct 29, 2020

It wasn’t supposed to end this way but nothing in 2020 has really gone down the way that it is supposed to. The Hot Springs Savage Heat fell 41-38 to the visiting Bridger Scouts in the first round of the Montana 6-Man football playoffs Saturday. The Scouts came back from a 38-20 deficit in the third quarter to win, scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 30-yard pass interception return by Baylor Pospisil midway through the fourth quarter. The Heat had one more scoring chance late, but that chance evaporated on downs at Bridger’s five-yard lin...

  • Blue Hawks shut down Charlo

    John Hamilton|Oct 22, 2020

The Hawks were tested but eventually came through with blue and gold flying colors. Led by their salty group of seniors making their final regular season appearance ever on hallowed Previs Field, the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks improved to 8-0 with a 22-0 win over the Charlo Vikings Friday night under the lights. The victory clinched no worse than the No. 2 seed from the Western Division for the unbeaten Blue Hawks, who were ranked No. 3 in Montana among all 8-Man teams in the most recent power...

  • Seasons delayed by COVID-19

    John Hamilton|Oct 22, 2020

Winter sports will have to wait a little longer in 2020, the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, Montana prep sports will have to wait until 2021, a year everyone is undoubtedly looking forward to after hopefully surviving the historic 365 days of 2020. Due to a decision last week by the Montana High School Association executive board, high school winter sports will not be contested until calendar year 2021. Originally set to begin November 19, winter sports will now begin practice on December 7, with actual competition slated to begin in J...

  • Hawk harriers run on to State

    John Hamilton|Oct 22, 2020

Consider 2020 the year of socially distant distance running, and it will all come to an end at the Montana All-Class Cross Country Meet at Rebecca Farms in Kalispell Friday. Although the race format was not certain at press time, the Class B girls will run at 2 p.m., followed bu the Class B boys at 3. Already off for two weeks and just out of quarantine due to a team member testing positive for COVID-19, coach Sarah Naegeli says her Hawks have been diligent about continuing to run in spite of...

  • Lady Hawks in motion

    John Hamilton|Oct 22, 2020

Poetry in motion. Watching the Lady Hawk volleyball team this season is kind of like watching poetry in motion, every single move seems to be well-thought out and finished with a flourish. Playing poetically perfect volleyball twice more last week, the Lady Hawks swept to a 25-10, 25-17, 26-24 win over Mission in St. Ignatius Thursday and to a 25-14, 25-16, 25-16 win over the visiting Bigfork Vals in Thompson Falls Saturday. Hosting the District 7B tournament October 29-30, the Lady Hawks will...

  • Devils hope to play Friday

    John Hamilton|Oct 22, 2020

The Noxon Red Devils are scheduled to play the Harlowtown-Ryegate Engineers in Harlowtown Friday night in the first round of the Montana 6-Man football playoffs. Whether coach Bart Haflich and his Red Devils make that trip was largely up in the air Monday afternoon as Noxon schools were set to shut down for three days beginning Tuesday due to one or possibly two positive COVID-19 cases. School officials said remote learning would be held for at least three days before any further decisions will...

  • Savage Heat to host Bridger

    John Hamilton|Oct 22, 2020

Known for high-scoring games with lots of offense, Montana 6-Man football is still a game usually decided by which team has the better defense. Hoping his Savage Heat have the correct mix of offense and defense, coach Jim Lawson and his 3-1 team, as the No. 2 seed out of the west, will host the 5-1 Bridger Scouts, the No. 2 team out of the south. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday in the Spa City. “I often think that holding a team to 20 or 25 points is a good defensive effort in the 6-Man game,” Lawson said. “If you are able to do that, you a...

  • Undermanned Horsemen fall to Mountain Cats in 8-Man division play

    John Hamilton|Oct 22, 2020

The undermanned Horsemen didn't have the horses to hang with the Mountain Cats. Down four Horsemen due to COVID-19 quarantine protocols, the Plains football team lost 46-0 to Clark Fork in Superior in 8-Man action Saturday. Plains coach Eddie Fultz knew the Horsemen could be in trouble when he was able to suit up only 12 players in Superior, a group he called "three seniors and a bunch of freshmen." "We went in with only 12 players, so I knew we would have the deck stacked against us," he said....

  • Noxon Red Devils await their 6-Man playoff fate

    John Hamilton|Oct 15, 2020

With time to lick their wounds and redirect their focus before playing again, coach Bart Haflich and his Noxon Red Devils now await their final playoff fate. The No. 3 seed from the 6-Man Western Division, the Devils completed regular season play with a 48-28 loss to Hot Springs in the Spa City Thursday. The Devils played well at times in that game, but most of those times were in the second half, when they staged a gallant comeback after falling behind 28-0 by halftime. The most damaging...

  • Heat clinch No. 2 seed

    John Hamilton|Oct 15, 2020

HOT SPRINGS – It was a tale of two games played in two cities in the space of less than two days and, in the end, maybe it was just a little too much to do. The No. 2 Hot Springs Savage Heat defeated the Noxon Red Devils 48-28 in Hot Springs Thursday night under the lights and then went to White Sulphur Springs, where they lost to the host Hornets, the No. 6 rated 6-Man team in Montana, 53-15 Saturday afternoon. The one-win, one-loss weekend leaves the suddenly battle-weary Heat with a 3-1 r...

  • Lady Hawks block Eureka Lions

    John Hamilton|Oct 15, 2020

Refuse to lose, survive the battle and emerge victorious. Refusing to go down when faced with a pride of fired-up Lady Lions from Eureka in Thompson Falls Saturday, the resilient Lady Hawks battled back from two sets down to win 22-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-23, 15-11. Solidifying their grasp on the top spot in District 7B conference play with the win, coach Sandra Kazmierczak and her Lady Hawks will finish the regular season out with league matches, starting at Mission Thursday and continuing at Bigf...

  • Mission bulldogs Horsemen

    John Hamilton|Oct 15, 2020

PLAINS – The Horsemen moved the ball well, but offensive misfires cost them those potential hard-earned points in a 52-6 loss to Mission in Plains Saturday. Now 2-3 in Western Conference 8-Man football play, coach Eddie Fultz and his Horsemen will play the 3-2 Clark Fork Mountain Cats in Superior Saturday at 1 p.m. Fultz said Monday that the Horsemen’s already thin, young lineup will be stretched even farther this week as three players will be out due to COVID-19 contract tracing protocol, mea...

  • Hawks trample Trojans

    John Hamilton|Oct 15, 2020

by John Hamilton No October surprise from the Troy Trojans this year. Always on the lookout for the unexpected when they travel to Troy, the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks took no chances with the Trojans this time, repeatedly scoring at will on the Lincoln County boys on the way to a lopsided 75-0 win in Troy Friday. Now 7-0 with five shutout wins, the Hawks will host Charlo, one of the teams still in the hunt for a Western Conference 8-Man playoff berth, Thursday at 7 p.m. Originally set for Friday, the game was moved to Thursday due to a...

  • Blue Hawks blast past Horsemen

    John Hamilton|Oct 8, 2020

Relentless, intense, hard-hitting, blankety-blank good... The Thompson Falls Blue Hawks have been called a lot of things this fall but remember these important things they are called above all else – coach Jared Koskela and his boys are unbeaten and No. 3 ranked, leaving the Hawks in prime playoff position for the rapidly approaching Montana 8-Man football post-season. The barely bruised Blue Hawks won the 2020 Black and Blue game from Plains 51-6 on the friendly confines of Previs Field Friday...

  • Vikes top Heat in 14C net war

    John Hamilton|Oct 8, 2020

HOT SPRINGS – Volleyball warfare, District 14C style. Complete with hard-hit, well-placed shots flying from both sides of the net, the Hot Springs Savage Heat faced off with the Charlo Lady Vikings in Hot Springs last Thursday in a heated battle for conference net supremacy. Finding a few more howitzers in their arsenal at crucial junctures in the match, the powerful Lady Vikings won this particular battle 25-20, 25-19, 29-27 and now assume control of the regular season conference race. After s...

  • Horsemen look ahead to Mission

    John Hamilton|Oct 8, 2020

Plains coach Eddie Fultz's idea of an ideal football situation is a roster comprised of an even mix of classes, with roughly equal numbers of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. What he has this season with the Horsemen is nothing like that. "We have six seniors but two of them never played football until this season," Fultz said, "and we have only one junior. It makes it kind of tough when you don't have that upperclassmen component to your roster, especially in football." A few...

  • Sanders County 6-Man showdown

    John Hamilton|Oct 8, 2020

The Noxon Red Devils took care of their playoff-clinching duties with a 67-38 win over Valley Christina in Victor Saturday, now they can turn their attention to improving that playoff position as much as possible. On the other end of the county, the Hot Springs Savage Heat will face an improbable situation that appears as if it will come to pass, hosting Noxon Thursday night in the Spa City and then loading up the bus and heading to White Sulphur Springs for a game with the dangerous Hornets,...

  • Lady Hawks keep on keepin' on, top Troy

    John Hamilton|Oct 8, 2020

The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks are a very good volleyball team; evidently with or without the All-State Scarlette Schwindt in the lineup. With Schwindt staying back home as a precautionary measure, the Lady Hawks went to Troy and blasted past the homestanding Lady Trojans 25-15, 25-12, 25-7. “Scarlette is fine, she had a headache that day, so she stayed home,” coach Sandra Kazmierczak said. “But it was good to get some other girls into the rotation and everyone did great. We played a very strong match in Troy.” The other All-State netter...

  • Blue Hawks host 2020 TF Invite

    John Hamilton|Oct 1, 2020

One of the favorite cross country races of any season for area runners, the Thompson Falls Invitational was held on sunny, scenic River's Bend Golf Course last Thursday. Highlighting the efforts for coach Sarah Naegeli's Blue Hawk harriers, senior Justin Morgan ran down an impressive second place in the boys varsity race with a time of 17:15.95, and freshman Hattie Neesvig led the Hawks in finishing 20th in 23:14.89. Eureka won the boys team race with 60 points, Columbia Falls was second with...

  • Seeley-Swan volleys past Heat

    John Hamilton|Oct 1, 2020

HOT SPRINGS – There is no shame in losing when you get better in the bargain. Coach Alisha Pablo and her improving Savage Heat netters lost to visiting Seeley-Swan in four tough sets in Hot Springs Thursday. Two of the better teams in the Western C division this fall, the District 13C Black Hawks and the 14C Savage Heat could end up seeing each other again when the Western C tournament is played. "We look forward to playing them again if we get the chance, Seeley-Swan is a tough team," Pablo o...

  • Hornets sting Red Devils

    John Hamilton|Oct 1, 2020

NOXON – The White Sulphur Springs Hornets made the long trip to Noxon pay off with a 33-18 road win over the Red Devils in the West End Friday in Western C 6-Man football action. With both teams playing only their second games of the season five weeks into what normally would be the middle of the season, the Hornets had the goods to get by the determined home boys from Noxon. "It was strange having a game of this magnitude, this late in the season, when it seemed kind of like an early season g...

  • Blue Hawks blankety-blank tough on opponents so far

    John Hamilton|Oct 1, 2020

It’s been a blankety, blank, blank, blank kind of season for the Thompson Falls Blue Hawk football team, and you could expect the blanking to continue. If coach Jared Koskela and his hungry Hawks have their way, that is. Unbeaten with a 5-0 record and ranked No. 3 in the latest Montana 8-Man power poll, the Hawks flew into Arlee Friday and blanked the Warriors 52-0. It was the red-hot Blue Hawks’ fourth, count ‘em fourth, straight shutout win. Since shading Mission 38-32 in Mission to start the season, Koskela and his Hawks have had a blank...

  • Lady Hawks win 2 more

    John Hamilton|Oct 1, 2020

The Lady Hawks moved to two more volleyball wins without the loss of a set last week, taking down the Scarlets 25-15, 25-14, 25-12 in Arlee Tuesday (Sept. 22) and bumping off the Mission Lady Bulldogs 25-17, 25-10, 25-10 in Thompson Falls Thursday. With this Thursday’s home match (which was to be the Lady Hawks’ homecoming match) with Bigfork cancelled, the Lady Hawks’ only other action this week was a match at Troy Tuesday, and results were not available at press time. Coach Sandra Kazmierczak likes the direction her latest group of Lady...

  • Horsemen corral Victor Pirates

    John Hamilton|Oct 1, 2020

It was a wet and rainy night in Plains. The homestanding Horsemen added pain to the rain by pounding the visiting Victor Pirates 64-20 in Western Conference 8-Man football play Friday. Now 2-1 in conference play, coach Eddie Fultz and his Horsemen will receive their sternest test yet of the season when they visit Previs Field in Thompson Falls Friday night for an intra-county encounter with the unbeaten (5-0), No. 4 ranked Blue Hawks. Fultz sees some similarities between the county rivals in the way they approach the game. “Thompson Falls a...
