  • Horsemen turn their bus around

    John Hamilton|Sep 3, 2020

Getting that first NC didn’t take long – not long at all. The Plains Horsemen were forced to turn around and go home after getting all the way to Drummond Friday, turning the potential Western Conference 8-Man football game into the season’s first dreaded NC. That NC means No Contest, and we could see more of them yet this season. The Horsemen’s coach Eddie Fultz knew there could be NCs coming this season, he just may not have happened to expect them so soon. The Horsemen were in fact, en route to Philipsburg Friday when the call from the Pla...

  • Savage Heat gridders ready for action

    John Hamilton|Sep 3, 2020

The numbers game is something the Hot Springs Savage Heat football team is used to playing. When they have suitable numbers, veteran coaches Jim Lawson and Andrew Leichtnam have proven than they can guide Hot Springs 6-Man teams to great things, like to State championship titles in 2012 and 2016 and to the playoffs (and usually deep into the playoffs) every other year the Heat have been a 6-Man entity. The Brandon Knudsen-led Heat of 2019 were no exception to that formula of success, going unbeaten through much of the season before falling to...

  • Savage Heat hope to repeat net magic

    John Hamilton|Sep 3, 2020

Fresh off one of the best net seasons in school history, coach Alisha Pablo and her retooled Hot Springs Savage Heat are looking forward to another one of the best net seasons in school history. Pablo guided the Savage Heat to new net heights last year as the Heat qualified for a rare Western C berth by winning second-place in the District 14C tournament, and then followed that up with a strong fourth place finish at the Western C tourney. And although All-conference hitter McKennzie Cannon and all-around players Sydney and Sage Jackson have gr...

  • Pigskin fever is infecting Noxon

    John Hamilton|Sep 3, 2020

Football fever in Noxon during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020? You got that right, coach Bart Haflich and his hungry Red Devils are reaching a fever pitch in practice sessions so far. “We are optimistic and excited,” Haflich said. “We are looking forward to the game with Gardiner and seeing how we match up.” Haflich and his Red Devils, who have qualified for the last three straight State 6-Man playoffs, open season play Friday hosting Gardiner. The Devils currently have only four Western Conference games on their schedule as all non-conference g...

  • Trotters to host Lady Red Devils; Plains games on air

    John Hamilton|Sep 3, 2020

The Plains Trotters were set to host the Noxon Lady Red Devils Tuesday in the season-opening match for both teams. Results from that match were not available at press time. In other action this coming week, coach Jessica Butcher’s Trotters will visit St. Regis Thursday and visit Hot Springs next Tuesday. Noxon was set to open season play at Hot Springs Thursday and will play at Clark Fork, Idaho, next Tuesday. Dana Grupenhoff is back as coach of the Lady Red Devils after Teri Wilkinson retired following the last school year. For those unable t...

  • Hawk netters to host Falcons Thursday

    John Hamilton|Sep 3, 2020

The feathers should be flying when the Lady Hawks and Falcons mix it up. In one of the premiere matches of the Western B volleyball season, the Florence Falcons will visit Thompson Falls Thursday for early season bragging rights in the division. The perennially powerful Falcons, who won second place in the State B tourney a second straight time last fall, won a road match over Class A Stevensville to open their season last week, proving they have the makings of another good team this fall. After starting the season with a road-trip split – d...

  • COVID-19 or not, prep sport seasons begin

    John Hamilton|Aug 27, 2020

On your marks, get set, go… Ready, set, hut… Bump, serve, hit. The rules of the games have not changed, but the rules of life have now been altered, perhaps forever. Even if sports do end up having long successful seasons this fall, these races, games and matches will not look like anything we have yet seen in any of our lifetimes. Welcome to the age of COVID-19 in the fall of 2020. Although it seems kind of hard to believe, cross country, football and volleyball seasons get underway. But, before action even began the season was affected by cor...

  • Horsemen to test Titans Friday

    John Hamilton|Aug 27, 2020

Plains Horsemen football coach Eddie Fultz is trying to stay in the here and now. In this peculiar year of history named 2020, staying optimistic in the present is proving to be a challenge. “I’m urging our kids to stay in the moment,” Fultz told the Ledger Tuesday “The year 2020 is going to be the year of hindsight. It’s going to be easy to tell what we should have done once it is over; but we have to go through the front end of it first. And that could prove to be a challenge.” COVID-19 restrictions or not, the Horsemen are scheduled t...

    John Hamilton|Aug 27, 2020

Kevin Sparks lit up River’s Bend last week, shooting down a straight-up 38 to lead the Tuesday night men around the Bend in weekly league action. John Hamilton|Aug 20, 2020

The Wednesday night war between Whitefish Credit Union and Wild Coyote continued last week at River’s Bend. Buoyed by the low individual gross of 36 carded by Gary Thompson, he, Steve Clark, Howard Morkert and Dave Petteys team Wild Coyote put together the low team gross of 175. Whitefish Credit Union golfers Wally Gibe, Rusty Sharp, Randy Hojem and Chuck Manry kept their team in first carding a collective 144 for the low team net. • Young bear sparks wildfire

    John Hamilton|Aug 13, 2020

In the ironies of ironies, a small bear started a wildfire on Smokey Bear’s 76th birthday Sunday. That young bear, who obviously did not heed Smokey’s fire prevention message, climbed a power poll outside of Ravalli and was promptly electrocuted, which at the very least put an end to his fire-starting ways, although it unfortunately did cost him his young life. The barbequed bear’s body then fell to the ground and started a small grass fire. Fortunately, the CSKT Division of Fire, aided by rural firefighting forces, was there to quickly quell t...

  • Double H Dirt golfers bury the competition

    John Hamilton|Aug 13, 2020

So you want a fairway fight? A duel to be the first Tuesday men to River’s Bend’s clubhouse door as the season winds down? Sorry about that guys but it might just have to wait until next season now, after the Double H Dirt golfers dominated league play last week, building a 13-point lead heading into the dying throes of season play. Led by Scott Pardee, who brought home the bacon with the low individual gross of 41, Double H’s other brothers Ty Pardee, Kade Pardee and Tom Kirkland chimed in the register the low team gross of 166. Lakes...

  • Ostwald makes Bend his private playpen

    John Hamilton|Aug 13, 2020

It was fun night at River’s Bend for Wednesday Night Men’s play last week, and no one had more fun than hot-shooting Ryan Ostwald, who has made the Bend his under-par playpen the past two weeks. Seven days after beating the Bend with a remarkable four-under par effort back on July 29, Ostwald notched a one-under round of 35 this past week. Included in Ostwald’s latest assault on par were the shot closest to the pin in 3 on No. 2, and the long drive of the night on No. 9. In other play of the day, Jesse Mosher carded the low net of 32, Ben M...

  • 2020 Hucklebery Run to be held this weekend

    John Hamilton|Aug 13, 2020

There will be a Huckleberry Run in 2020; only it will be run ala carte, at your own time and at your own pace, as long as it is run between anytime Friday, Aug. 14, and 9 p.m., Sunday Aug. 16. This year’s race, redesigned and organized by Clark Fork Valley Running Club (CFVRC) president Sarah Naegeli, with a little help from her running friends, will begin and end at the Trout Creek School. The new course layout, which is still 5K, is well-marked and easy to follow, Naegeli said. Naegeli said that while social distancing is being written r...

  • Quarantine time for Wild Coyote?

    John Hamilton|Aug 6, 2020

Should the Coyotes be quarantined? The Wednesday Night Men’s league just caught the Coyote-20 virus, and more than 80% of the players in the league hope they can fight it off in the next few weeks. Team Wild Coyote played some sick golf last week at River’s Bend and snuck past the Whitefish CU four last week to take over first place with 92.5 points while Whitefish slides down into second with 89.5. Hagedorn Land Surveying golfers Ryan Ostwald, Paul Flemmer, Rick Hagedorn and Bernie Groshong shot down the low team gross of 165 as Ostwald pos...

    John Hamilton|Aug 6, 2020

Easy Street Autoworks won’t make this easy for the Double H Dirt Works boys. Double H Dirt Works golfers carded the low team gross, but the Easy Street four crept to within 1.5 points of the Dirt guys’ second half lead with a big night of their own in Tuesday Night Men’s League play at River’s Bend last week. Dirt Works duffers Ty Pardee, Russ Yeager, Tom Kirkland and Jake Helvey shot the low team gross of 172 while Bear Muscle Fitness golfers Rick Hagedorn, Cody Mosher, John Mosher and Steve Fairbank added up the low team net of 140. • A socially distant run

    John Hamilton|Aug 6, 2020

Run at your own pace, run at your own time, while keeping your distance from everyone else. This is the way road races are run during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. The 2020 Huckleberry Run is on again, only it will be when you want to run it during the weekend of Aug. 14-16, on a course that has been marked out new specially for this year, according to long-time event organizer and running aficionado Sarah Naegeli. The course, which will be well-marked and laid out in a somewhat similar fashion compared to what it has been in the past, will...

  • Hundreds of acres burning near Dixon

    John Hamilton|Jul 30, 2020

The bad news is two wildland fires broke out early this week and were reported to still be burning in Sanders County as of Tuesday afternoon. The good news is that neither fire is threatening any structures and no evacuations have been ordered at this point. The Magpie Rock fire, estimated to be between 250 and 300 acres, burning in the mountains about eight miles west of Dixon and south of Highway 200 in the Magpie Creek area, is a lightning-caused blaze believed to have been started by a passing storm late last week. The fire is currently...

  • Will they be able to play?

    John Hamilton|Jul 30, 2020

Hoping upon hope that it’s a go, just as all the prep athletes, coaches and fans are also hoping; the Montana High School Association (MHSA) released its plans for still conducting sports and other sponsored school activities this fall during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. If all went perfectly, sports practices and competitions (with a few exceptions) could be on schedule this fall, with many, many details included in the MHSA operating plan. Although the plan could turn out to be little more than wishful thinking depending on what happens w...

  • Coyotes play catch up with Whitefish CU

    John Hamilton|Jul 30, 2020

Not so fast, Whitefish Credit Union golfers! The Wednesday Night Men’s League standing tightened up significantly last week as Hagedorn Land Surveying shot the low team gross of 171 and team Wild Coyote carded the low team net of 149. As a result of last week’s hot and heavy action at River’s Bend, Whitefish Credit Union’s second-half league lead was reduced to only 1.5 points over Wild Coyote as the season winds down. Ryan Ostwald, Paul Flemmer, Rick Hagedorn and Bernie Groshong canvassed the course for Hagedorn last week and Gary Thompso...

  • Health board looks to expand

    John Hamilton|Jul 23, 2020

The safety plan for the 4-H/FFA portion of the 2020 Sanders County Fair and a measure designed to allow the addition of two additional members to its board were two issues approved by unanimous consent at the Sanders County Board of Health (BOH) meeting in Thompson Falls on July 16. Held at the courthouse, the meeting also included discussion about the recently enacted mask requirement from the governor’s COVID-19 order for Montana. Regarding Sanders County, the board discussed a contingency plan for keeping the courthouse open to the public a...
