Mission-Charlo and Eureka look to be the teams to beat in this week's Western B-C wrestling tourney, but the main goal for most wrestlers will be to simply get through and earn your spot in the next really big show – the State B-C tournament at Metra Park in Billings Feb. 14-15. The 2020 Western B-C divisional tournament will be held in Mission Saturday and the top four place-winners in each weight class will earn their spots in the big show in Billings. Local grappling teams from Thompson F...
With the Western B-C divisional wrestling tournament being held in Mission Saturday, a lot of memories of Thompson Falls’ two State B-C championship teams have been brought back by the recent celebration of those 1979 and 1980 Blue Hawks at TFHS. At a special ceremony during a Jan. 24 triangular dual meet, members, managers and coaches who made it back to Thompson Falls for the event were brought out on the mat and honored once more. In an attempt to further honor those great teams, the focus of this column for the next two weeks will be to r...
It just goes to show that winning never goes out of style. The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks, wearing the same uniforms as a previous generation of Hawks who won the Western B championship in 2003 did, swept past Anaconda 64-49 at TFHS Saturday. Sporting those old championship duds of Falls legends like Katie Holleran, Amanda Grazier and Victoria Kazmierczak wore so successfully so many years ago, the Hawks looked the part of divisional champs in the way they worked past a very good Anaconda team....
It must be nice, being in control of your own destiny. To have earned the ability, the right to call your own shots. Ranked No. 7 in the most recent Montana Class C power poll and now an impressive 13-1 overall, the Hot Springs Savage Heat girls have put themselves in good position as the season winds down. Now it is a matter of finishing the regular season strong and taking that impetus gained into the tournaments. The Heat beat Valley Christian 66-29 in Missoula Friday in their only game last week. Coach Richard Jackson and several of his pla...
People are starting to sit up and take notice of the Plains Trotters. The Trotters defeated the Arlee Scarlets 61-50 in Arlee Saturday in their only game last week. With the District 14C tournament only two weeks away (in Ronan Feb. 20-22), coach Eddie Fultz and his Trotters have been playing well lately, and are hoping that improvement continues. Plains has two 14C conference games on tap this week. The Trotters host 12-1 Hot Springs, the No. 7 rated Class C team in Montana, Thursday before hitting the road for a game at St. Regis Friday....
There are moments in time where teams are made. When individual athletes find the way to meld their talents together for the betterment of the group – to come together as a true team. Noxon Lady Red Devil coach Cortney Vohs thinks her young team did just that in St. Regis last week, running past the Tigers 45-28. "We could not have played better, I am so proud of how the girls came together," she said. "We had much better ball movement on offense and played good team defense. It was a good t...
The Noxon Red Devils are beginning to realize their basketball potential. Coach Ryan Weltz's Devils scored an encouraging split in District 14C basketball last week, falling to the Tigers 63-49 in St. Regis Friday but playing well in that game, and scoring a 62-54 win over visiting Charlo in Noxon Saturday. Encouraged by the strong play of his team last week, Weltz will guide the Noxon boys into Hot Springs Saturday in their only scheduled action this week. "The Charlo game was a good win for...
Horsemen coach Tyrel Allen said the Arlee Warriors would be one of the best teams his Plains boys would face this season. The Warriors proved Allen right by blitzing past the Horsemen 75-54 in a non-conference game at Arlee Saturday. Now 11-3 overall but still 6-0 in 14C play, the Horsemen will put that unbeaten conference record on the line this week, hosting Hot Springs Thursday and going to St. Regis to play the dangerous Tigers Friday. St. Regis’ only 14C loss this season was to the Horsemen in Plains back on Jan. 9. “They haven’t lost...
The Valley Christian Eagles have come a long ways in only a few weeks. Rebounding from a 53-43 loss to the Savage Heat in Hot Springs back on Jan. 3, the resurgent Eagles knocked off the Heat 77-60 in Missoula Saturday. Hot Springs coach Scott Fredrickson was impressed with how the Eagles played against his Heat the second time around. “They played well, that was the best man-to-man defense we have seen all year,” Fredrickson said. “Their coach has them playing good basketball, they will be a threat if they continue to play like they did again...
The Blue Hawks got down and dirty in the Snake Pit with the hometown Copperheads and live to tell about it. Coach Jake Mickelson and his Thompson Falls boys traveled to Anaconda Saturday and lost their most recent tussle in the Snake Pit, the ‘Heads’ official unofficial name for their place of business, 76-59 to the hometown boys. Mickelson thought the Hawks played well but that hot shooting by the Anaconda crew may have been the difference. “It was a game of streaks – we started out down 10-0 but fought back to take the lead in the second...
Ready for prime time. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawk wrestlers, as part of a weekend celebrating the 1979 and 1980 Thompson Falls State B-C championship teams, made a strong showing at the Ted Kato Memorial tournament at TFHS, putting five grapplers in the finals (with two winning titles) and finishing fourth in team scoring in the 13-team meet. It appears that the Hawks are now primed and ready for the stretch run of the season, which will reach its zenith at the State B-C meet in Billings, Feb....
Plains-Hot Springs coach Jeff Kujala likes where his Savage Horsemen are at as far as being ready for the rest of the season goes, now he wants his wrestlers to think about going other places – like the State B-C tournament in Billings, Feb. 14-15. "I am happy with where we are at as far as how the kids are performing," he said. "Now we need to think about finishing strong with the tournaments coming up." Fresh off the Ted Kato Memorial tourney in Thompson Falls Saturday, where Conrad V...
PLAINS – Games with the Arlee Warriors aren't what they used to be for the Plains Horsemen. After all, over the course of the last several years, the powerful Warriors were the undisputed kings of District 14C basketball, going on to win two of the last three State C tournaments and finishing second in the other, and were traditionally the most feared opponents for any 14C foe. Things have changed this year however as Arlee has been realigned into Class B, taking the conference-counting p...
PLAINS – Maybe the Lady Vikings are not invincible after all. The Plains Trotters put a scare into the undefeated, No. 4 ranked Charlo girls Thursday in Plains, taking a 26-25 lead into the fourth quarter and then hanging in there with the powerful Vikings for most of the last eight minutes before finally falling back to the 39-30 loss. “We were only four down with about a minute and a-half left,” Plains coach Eddie Fultz said. “We did a lot of good things in the first three quarters but some mistakes in the fourth really hurt us.” Still, th...
Knocking down shots and knocking off opponents. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys notched two more wins last week, overwhelming Noxon 68-34 in Thompson Falls last Tuesday (Jan. 21) and moving past Clark 64-48, also in Thompson Falls, Thursday. The Hawks, after having Thursday’s scheduled game at Troy switched to Tuesday (and results were not available), have only one non-conference game this week, at Anaconda Saturday. Originally from Philipsburg (only 30 miles away from Anaconda), Hawk coach Jake Mickelson knows what it’s like to play in Ana...
Call it a Fab Five of sorts, and coach Chadd Laws and his Lady Hawks are looking forward to it. Beginning Saturday at TFHS gym with District 6B’s Anaconda Copperheads, the Lady Hawks will then play out the regular season with five important games, also including Loyola, Eureka, Mission and Bigfork over the course of the next few weeks. “Our last five games are all with very competitive, challenging opponents,” Laws said. “We think this will help prepare us, help us get ready for the tournament season.” Now 10-2 (results from Tuesday’s reschedul...
Now 6-1 in District 14C play and 12-1 overall, coach Richard Jackson and his Hot Springs Savage Heat girls are still unimpressed with themselves and eager to get on with the rest of the season. Hot Springs won both games they played last week, defeating Two Eagle River 69-15 in Pablo Thursday and taking down Troy in Hot Springs Friday. The score from the Troy game was not available. Still seeming to be smarting from a tough 43-40 loss to Charlo Jan. 15, the Heat will get a chance to avenge that defeat in Hot Springs Feb. 15 when coach Bret...
There is a sense of urgency with Noxon Lady Red Devil basketball lately. As in hurry, get that girl to the emergency room, she is really sick! Sending players to the ER following two of last week’s three games, the still-sick but still-playing Lady Red Devils won two of the three, falling 66-23 to the Lady Hawks in Thompson Falls Jan. 21 and then upending Clark Fork (Idaho) 49-45 in Noxon Friday and Two Eagle River 67-25 in Pablo Saturday. After the Thompson Falls game, Noxon starter Chelsea Vohs, coach Cortney Voh’s step-daughter, was taken to...
O + D = W. That’s age-old, coach-speak for a simple formula for success that has worked forever in all sports. You put some O (offense) together with good D (defense) and you can get the W (the win). Hot Springs boys basketball coach Scott Fredrickson and his Savage Heat are sticking with that basic plan, and moved to two more wins last week using it, holding off Two Eagle River 79-67 in Pablo Thursday and returning to Hot Springs Friday and defeating Troy 67-49. All in on offense, defense and winning some more, the Savage Heat play Valley C...
The Noxon Red Devil boys won two of three games last week, falling to Thompson Falls 68-34 in Thompson Falls Tuesday before coming back to defeat Clark Fork (Idaho) 39-36 in Noxon Friday and Two Eagle River 55-53 in Pablo Saturday. Coach Ryan Weltz and his Red Devils have two District 14C conference games on tap this week, visiting St. Regis Friday and hosting Charlo Saturday. Nate Cano and Rylan Weltz scored 12 points apiece to lead the Devils past Clark Fork, Brody Hill added six, Aiden Galloway and Wyatt Lackner four each and Michael...
by John Hamilton Ask about the results but never question the effort. The hard-trying, high-flying Blue Hawks lost a pair of hotly contested games last week, falling to District 7B-leading Bigfork 63-58 in Thompson Falls Friday and to District 6B's Deer Lodge Wardens 59-47 in Deer Lodge Saturday. Coach Jake Mickelson did not like losing the games but he does appreciate the effort his Blue Hawks are playing with right now. The game with the very young but very athletic Bigfork Vikings was a...
Consider it official; signed, sealed and delivered. The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks signed on the dotted line against Bigfork in Thompson Falls last Thursday, registering a signature win in the District 7B conference season with an exciting 52-42 triumph over the visiting Vals. With that District 7B message delivered, coach Chadd Laws took to the road Saturday and delivered another message to 6B's Deer Lodge Lady Wardens, knocking off the Powell County girls 55-39. "We have to close out games and...
What are you gonna do when Ted Kato wrestle-mania comes down on you? Thompson Falls High School will be the epicenter of prep wrestling in western Montana Saturday as the annual Ted Kato Memorial Tournament, which features 13 teams this season, will go down for the 2019-20 season. Besides host Thompson Falls-Noxon, the field of teams includes Montana squads Mission-Charlo, Clark Fork (Superior-Alberton), the Kalispell Glacier JV, the Kalispell Flathead JV, the Missoula Sentinel JV, the Missoula...
With only about a month of the season remaining, it’s time for Montana prep wrestlers to gather amongst themselves, fight it out and build the pecking order for what really counts – the upcoming divisional and state tournaments. The Choteau tournament last week and the Kato Memorial in Thompson Falls this week are just such the kind of places where champions are forged, made by flesh and blood struggles. Thompson Falls coach Mike Thilmony was very satisfied with his Blue Hawks last week at the Choteau Tournament in spite of the fact that the...
Jimmy Carter was the President of the United States but Ronald Reagan had just been voted in and would soon be taking his place in the Oval Office when the 1979-80 prep wrestling season began. In the Pacific Northwest, Mount St. Helens was rumbling mightily but Harry R. Truman was still holding on to his hotel and living dangerously on the shores of nearby Spirit Lake, after he had repeatedly been told to leave. If you were watching television at that time – and everyone was in those days of pre...
