Building towards a big finish – at the State B-C meet in Billings Feb. 14-15 – the Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen worked the mats with 35 other teams in the Choteau Invitational Friday and Saturday. Led by senior Conrad Vanderwall, who won sixth place at 138 pounds, the Savage Horsemen scored 19 team points in the two-day tourney. “It was really tough competition in Choteau, the majority of the top kids in the state were there,” coach Jeff Kujala said. “We wrestled pretty well and now know what we need to work on over the next three wee...
It’s a girl, she was born early Monday morning, and she was 7 pounds, 6 ounces and 24.5 inches long at berth. And her name is Tyler Wynne Fultz, the newest addition to the Plains Trotter basketball family. Proud papa Eddie Fultz was still at Clark Fork Valley Hospital Monday morning tending to his wife Rheanna and his new baby girl, but took some time to talk basketball. The coach of the Trotters, Fultz guided his team to two wins before the blessed event occurred last week, trouncing Two Eagle River 63-9 in Plains Thursday and outlasting N...
If you are playing the Plains Horsemen lately, do not ask for whom the bell tolls, the bell tolls for thee. Although a Hemingway quote may seem an odd basketball analogy to make, the Horsemen have been writing a book lately about different ways to win basketball games. Last week, it was a little bit of offense mixed in with a lot of defense that produced two more Plains wins as the Horsemen downed the Two Eagle River Eagles 70-43 in Plains Thursday before traveling down to Noxon Friday and stopping the Devils 59-18. Coach Tyrel Allen and his...
It’s hard to believe he said it right after the game, but he is saying it now. “That loss is the best thing that has ever happened to us,” Hot Springs coach Richard Jackson said Monday evening. “I predict it will help us get our heads right for the rest of the season.” The Charlo Lady Vikings scored a key District 14C win over Hot Springs in Charlo Friday, staving off the Savage Heat 43-40. Although he would not directly criticize the officiating in the game, Jackson did point to the fact that Hot Springs was awarded only nine free throws fo...
These are the kind of games that build teams. Coach Cortney Vohs and her Noxon Lady Red Devils scored an encouraging split in home games last week, running past Troy 50-22 Thursday, and then taking Plains into overtime before losing a wild 58-54 decision to the Trotters Friday. Although she liked the win over Troy, Vohs was far happier with the loss to Plains. “That was a very encouraging game for our girls, proving that we can play with a team like Plains,” she said. “That was our best game yet and something that we can build on from here on o...
From the best to the worst, all in the matter of about 24 hours. The Noxon Red Devil boys split home basketball games in the West End last week, upending Troy 61-53 Thursday during the best of times, and falling 59-18 to Plains during the worst of times. Currently sporting a respectable record of 5-5, the Devils play at Clark Fork, Idaho, Thursday and in Pablo versus Two Eagle River Saturday. The Devils were to have played at Thompson Falls Tuesday but results of that game were not available Red Devil coach Ryan Weltz was left scratching his he...
The Savage Heat boys hit a couple of bumps in the District 14C road and lost hard-fought conference games to St. Regis in Hot Springs Thursday and to Charlo in Charlo Friday. The 61-57 loss to Charlo sticks in coach Scott Fredrickson’s mind the most. “We’re still smarting a little from the Charlo game,” he said. “We were up by five points with about three minutes left but Charlo ended up coming back to win. “We had a chance to pull the ball out and run some clock but waited too long,” he added, “and they were able to take advantage.” Cha...
It’s official, girls wrestling will be a high school sport in Montana beginning next school year, the Montana High School Association announced at its annual meeting in Billing early this week. To offset the addition of a girls sport and to satisfy Title IX regulations, boys powerlifting was also added for the 2020-2021 school year. As outlined in the proposal, girls wrestling will be a winter sport with the proposed weight classes of 103, 113, 126, 138, 152, 170 and 205. Initially at least there will be no girls divisional tournaments, only a...
HOT SPRINGS – The Savage Heat think they can, and it's probably best to not bet against coach Scott Fredrickson and his Hot Springs boys. Gaining experience and confidence as they go, the very young but very hard-working Savage Heat split games with Sanders County foes last week, falling 70-53 to District 14C-leading Plains in Hot Springs Friday and then defeating Noxon 60-40 in Noxon Saturday. Now 2-1 in District 14C play and 5-4 overall, the Heat host St. Regis Thursday and travel to Charlo Fr...
HOT SPRINGS – It's big game time for the Hot Springs Savage Heat girls. In one of the premier basketball games of the 2019-2020 season, the undefeated Savage Heat, who improved to 3-0 in 14C play and 9-0 overall last week, will travel to Charlo Friday to take on the likewise unbeaten Lady Vikings, the No. 4 rated Class C team in Montana according to the latest power poll released last week. Although not currently ranked, the Savage Heat most certainly will have the full attention of coach B...
Fresh off a long road trip to Cut Bank, coach Mike Thilmony and his Thompson Falls Blue Hawks will load the bus back up, turn it around and head back north and east this week for the annual Choteau Invitational. The Hawks suffered through a variety of issues which affected their lineup last week. First off, the grades came out and several Hawks were determined to be temporarily ineligible. Then the flu bug hit and put a few more Fall grapplers out of action for at least the weekend. The end...
They are hungry, hungry Hawks, and they are continuing to eat the season up as they go. Coach Chadd Laws and his hungry Lady Hawks split District 7B conference games last week, devouring Mission 67-48 in Thompson Falls Thursday but losing 51-47 to the Lady Lions in Eureka Saturday. Still dealing with hoop hunger pangs and now 2-1 in 7B play and 6-2 overall, the Hawks host Bigfork in another important conference encounter Thursday before joining the Hawk boys for a non-conference boy/girl doubleh...
That oh-and-two could have easily been a two-and-oh. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys dropped a pair of tough District 7B contests on the road last week, falling 78-71 at Mission Thursday and 50-49 at Eureka Saturday. Now 1-2 in 7B action and 2-6 overall, coach Jake Mickelson and his Hawks will host surprising Bigfork Friday and play at Deer Lodge Saturday. Largely depleted by graduation after a second straight State B championship run last year, Bigfork has retooled itself with a younger lineup. The 4-4 Vikings broke into Montana’s top ten l...
The younger they are, the harder they fall… until they rise that is. The painfully young Noxon Red Devil girls dropped a pair of District 14C conference games last week, falling 60-36 to Clark Fork in Superior Friday and 50-26 to league-leading Hot Springs in Noxon Saturday. Coach Cortney Vohs and her Devils have two home games on tap this week, hosting Troy Thursday and Plains Friday. Without a single senior on the roster, Vohs knows the Lady Devils may have to take their share of lumps now and into the near future, but should be able to s...
Eddie Fultz's big day is coming and it has nothing to do with basketball. Then again, Fultz's next really big day – the day his first child is born to he and his wife Rheanna, which is officially due this Friday – could very well involve basketball, if that is what is going on precisely at the time of the big moment. And it could happen anytime this week or next, totally dependent on when the little Fultz child decides to make his or her grand appearance. With the Trotters hosting Two Eagle Riv...
The Noxon Red Devil boys are pretty green this season but are progressing, getting a little bit better every time out. Coach Ryan Weltz and Red Devils dropped a pair of District 14C conference games last week, falling 59-41 to Clark Fork in Superior Friday and 60-40 to Hot Springs in Noxon Saturday. Weltz is not upset with his team, he just thinks they need more time to season and mature. “Inexperience got us last week,” he said. “We turned the ball over way too much and our opponents were able to take advantage. “The kids played hard,...
The Horsemen like to run at a fast pace. The faster a basketball game is played, the better these Plains boys like it. Opening up their offense by creating opportunities with defensive pressure, coach Tyrel Allen's Horsemen galloped to a pair of District 14C conference wins last week, running past St. Regis 64-53 in Plains Thursday and turning back the Savage Heat 70-53 in Hot Springs Friday. The Horsemen stay on the 14C conference trail this week with games against Two Eagle River in Plains...
On to Choteau. Fresh off a third place finish in the five-team Mike McChesney Memorial tournament in Florence Saturday, coach Jeff Kujala and his Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen grapplers head to Choteau this weekend for the annual Choteau Invitational, traditionally one of the biggest and best Class B-C wrestling meets of any season. Hampered somewhat by various maladies to his wrestlers, Kujala says P-HS will take a reduced lineup into Choteau. “We are kind of beat up right now,” he said. “A few kids have some injuries they are tryin...
PLAINS – Back in black – and making a statement. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys, wearing their mostly black road uniforms, turned back Sanders County rival Plains in Plains for a surprising 67-48 win over their Sanders County rivals Friday. Coming off a lackluster home loss to Libby before the holidays, the Hawks were all business, and all action in Plains. "That was nice to see us get off the snide like that," coach Jake Mickelson said of the win, Thompson Falls' first of the 2019-2020 sea...
There is really no shame in losing. Not when you are contemplating ways to get better by putting your heads together and talking things out; by attempting to make yourselves better for the next time out. Coach Scott Fredrickson and his Hot Springs Savage boys may have lost to Mission 72-51 Friday but he was surprised, and pleased, with what he was hearing from his players immediately afterwards. “They were talking about things they could do better, ways of dealing with different things out there on the court,” he said. “And I was really encou...
Those dreaded post-holiday blues. One day you are sitting in the living room watching bowl games and eating to your heart's content and the next thing you know its basketball season again. Kind of looking like they would rather still be on vacation against Thompson Fall in Plains Friday (the visiting Hawks scored a surprising 67-48 victory), the Plains Horsemen woke up and found their game in Darby Saturday, holding off the hometown Tigers 52-46. Plains coach Tyrel Allen was not overly...
It's all about the tempo. And the faster that tempo is, the better the Lady Hawks like it. "Our focus is to have a relentless tempo," Thompson Falls coach Chadd Laws said after his girls had steamrolled Plains (70-36 in Plains Friday) and Troy (64-11 in Thompson Falls Saturday). "We want to be active on defense and trigger scoring opportunities for ourselves in the process. "So far, it has been working," he added. Indeed, the relentless ladies from Thompson Falls took a big lead early in both...
The more basketball the Plains Trotters play, the better they get. Coach Eddie Fultz's young Plains Trotters split a pair of non-conference games last week, falling 70-36 to Thompson Falls in front of a packed PHS gym in Plains Friday and coming back to defeat Darby 45-42 in Darby Saturday. Back in District 14C league play this week, Fultz and his Trotters will host St. Regis Thursday and visit Hot Springs Friday. Fultz thinks the Trotters have a perception problem when playing Thompson Falls....
With one of their most effective court warriors and team leaders on the sideline with a wounded knee, the Hot Springs Savage Heat girls still soldiered on. In spite of losing senior Sage Jackson to an injury during Thursday’s game with the Bulldogs in Mission, which the Heat won 54-50, Hot Springs went on to defeat Valley Christian 56-15 in Hot Springs Friday. Still 1-0 in District 14C play and now an impressive 7-0 overall, the Heat have a conference weekend on tap, hosting Plains Friday and traveling to Noxon Saturday. Coach Richard Jackson d...
The Noxon Lady Red Devils started out 2020 with an encouraging victory, fighting past visiting St. Regis for a 25-18 win in Noxon Friday. In other action last week, coach Cortney Vohs and her Lady Devils absorbed a 62-21 road loss from Charlo Saturday. The Devils are scheduled to play at Clark Fork (the Superior-Alberton co-op) Friday and will host Sanders County rival Hot Springs Saturday. Vohs was impressed with how her Devils responded against St. Regis. “Every girl stepped up to play for the St. Regis game,” she said. “They went out of th...
