The long dog days of summer are not quite here yet but, as a sports fan, I am already beginning to feel a little deprived. After all, with the NBA and NHL seasons concluding last week, we have now entered that uncomfortable time of the year when there is no basketball, no football and no hockey to watch; all we are left with to watch on TV is regular season major league baseball. Or, at this early point in the MLB season, snoozing through it. It’s kind of like a dead zone of sorts out there right now with a dearth of watchable sports available...

  • Blue Hawks show well at 8-Man camp

    John Hamilton|Jun 13, 2019

Maybe 8-Man football will be a good fit for Thompson Falls after all. Thompson Falls coach Jared Koskela accompanied 12 of his players to Butte last Friday through Sunday for the annual Montana Tech 8-Man Football Camp, and said he walked away from the Mining City feeling encouraged about what next fall – the Blue Hawks' first season as an 8-Man entity – may bring. "It was encouraging," he said. "We were a little behind the curve at first but, by the end, we had learned a lot about the 8-M...

    John Hamilton|May 30, 2019

It wasn't so much how they did, it was more about how they carried themselves during the competition. Being good with the spear throw earned Plains athletes Kaylee Altmiller and Malachi Paulsen berths into last week’s State C meet in Laurel. Altmiller followed up her third place finish from a week earlier at the Western C meet by winning fourth in Laurel for Plains’ only team points in the two-day meet, flinging the spear 116 feet, 9 inches to get her medal. The only Plains boy to qualify for the State C, Paulsen finished fourth at the Western C but was unable to place in Laurel, mar...

  • Time for your best

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

In track and field, the best time for your best is when it counts the most. Fueled by strong efforts from across the Missoula County Public Schools Stadium complex, the Lady Hawks surged to a fourth place team finish with 70 points, while the Hawk boys scored...

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Kyle Lawson and Elizabeth Lampshire are in seventh heaven right now. How could they not be, given that they earned spots in this week’s State C meet at Laurel not by finishing in the top six as usual, but by finishing in the top seven. Given the fact that there are simply more teams out west in the Class C ranks this season than in other parts of the state, Montana High School Association officials decided that the only fair thing to do was to allow the top seven place-winners in each event to qualify for the State C, and Lawson and L...

  • Hill players keep rouding the Bend

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Thirty-four is a good number, some of the Over the Hill gang players just might remember when that was how old they were. Or maybe not, after all that age may seem mighty long ago to some of the more should-we-say “experienced” golfers in Thompson Falls’ friendliest golfing league. Putting their chronological ages on this earth aside yet again, 34 of the as-young-as-you-feel Over the Hill duffers took another stab at River’s Bend this past Monday morning, and a good time was reportedly had by all. Leading the gang out on the Bend, Dave Garr nee...
