  • Wednesday men take a breather

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

The Wednesday Night Men’s League played a mid-season round just for fun last week but, rest assured, the golfing war will resume in earnest the next time these players gather at River’s Bend. Making their trip around the Bend the most enjoyable of all, the Hagedorn Land Surveying team put together the low gross round of 28. In other Wednesday highlights, Randy Hagedorn put down the long putts on Nos. 3 and 6, Scott Sol was closest to the pin off the tee on No. 5, Ryan Ostwald hit the long drive on No. 9, and Dan Kier hit the other long dri...

  • Devil boys surge to 3rd in Western C

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Call it a Red Devil redux, a revival of fortunes in Noxon track and field. Led by super-jumper Levi Brubaker, who won the long and triple jumps in convincing fashion, in addition to running down fifth place in the 100 meters and joining up with Jared Webley, Edison VanVleet and Josh Baldwin to take fifth in the long and short relays, the Noxon boys teamed up to score 54 points and win third place in the Western C divisional in Missoula meet last week. Manhattan Christian won the Western C crown...

  • Brown ties for 4th in State B meet

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Ethan Brown is not just another good golfer, he is now a certified two-time All-State B performer for the Thompson Falls golfing team. Playing in the State B tournament at the Ranch Club in Missoula last week, May 14-15, Brown used two identical-score rounds of 77 to total 154 strokes and tie for fourth individually. A junior, Brown also earned All-State B honors, which requires a top-15 finish, in 2018. "Ethan always seems to find a way to peak at just the right time," coach Mike Bates said....

  • Feed-N-Fuel fires up, 'The Hammer' scores

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Feed-N-Fuel threw fuel on the fire and Tom “The Hammer” Holleran put down the only chip-in to highlight action in Tuesday Night Men’s league play at River’s Bend last week. With Feed-N-Fuel golfers Steve Clark, Dave Petteys, Mike Gillmore and Doug Gunderson registering the low team net of 176, the dirty golf war between Double H Dirt Works and the rest of the league has been turned up a notch, although those Dirt Works players still lead league standing with 88.5 team points. Sitting in second with 85 points, Shanks a Lot shankers Dave Garr, Je...

  • Blue Hawk golfers Brown and Baxter move on to State B

    John Hamilton|May 16, 2019

On to bigger and better things. Not in the game for team glory this season, two Thompson Falls High School golfers with lofty individual expectations, junior Ethan Brown for the boys and Megan Baxter for the girls, were competing at Canyon River (girls) and the Ranch Club (boys) courses in Missoula early this week hoping to earn honors at the two-day State B tournament. To be played Tuesday and Wednesday, results from the State B were not available at press time. Although coaches Mike Bates and...

  • Hawks wing way to Western B meet

    John Hamilton|May 16, 2019

The final meet of the track and field regular season, the Bigfork Invitational actually served as more of a preview rather than a grand finale. With all of the Western B teams in attendance in Bigfork Saturday, the Thompson Falls track and field teams took advantage of the opportunity for one final tune-up against the same athletes they will go up against this week. Well, almost all the same athletes anyway. "It's always interesting to see what kids, who may already be state-qualified,...

  • TOURNAMENT TIME

    John Hamilton|May 16, 2019

Now it is all about keeping the momentum going – and taking that momentum with you all the way to Belgrade. The Plains-Hot Springs Trotters completed regular season play with three wins last week, avoiding a potential play-in game earlier this week and advancing on to the Western B-C divisional tournament in Anaconda this weekend as the No. 2 seeded team. The Western B-C tourney starts Friday and runs through Saturday in Anaconda, with the top four teams then moving on to the State B-C t...

  • Hawks close book on season

    John Hamilton|May 16, 2019

It wasn't the ending the Lady Hawks truly wanted, but it really wasn't that bad either. Coach Jared Koskela and his Thompson Falls Lady Hawks completed season softball play with a 13-3 loss to Loyola in Missoula in a Western B-C divisional tournament play-in game Monday. Although the Lady Hawks lost their chance to play more in this week's Western B-C tourney in Anaconda, they gained some self-respect from the competitive loss to Loyola, and also from a 9-6 loss to Plains-Hot Springs in...

    John Hamilton|May 16, 2019

The Trotters and Horsemen are moving on to the next track and field meet, and this one is the Western C divisional event in Missoula Thursday and Friday. The Western C will be held in conjunction with the Western B at Missoula Big Sky. Coach Denise Montgomery's athletes punched their tickets to Missoula with placing efforts in the District 14C meet last week in Missoula, also at Big Sky. The 14C meet was run concurrently with the District 13C meet in similar fashion as to how this week's action...

  • Savage Heat rise to challenge

    John Hamilton|May 16, 2019

The Savage Heat are rising to the occasion as the Western C track and field meet arrives. The Western C divisional meet will be held in conjunction with the Western B at Missoula County Public Schools Stadium at Big Sky High School in Missoula Thursday and Friday. Tyler Carr and Katelyn Christensen were the big point-winners for the Hot Springs track and field teams at that same facility in the District 14C meet in Missoula last Friday and Saturday. Hot Springs’ boys scored 53 points to place fourth and the girls racked up 39 points to f...

  • Shanks a Lot crew strikes back for lead

    John Hamilton|May 16, 2019

Not so fast, Double H Dirt Works, Shanks a Lot golfers think they know their way around River’s Bend just as well or better than you. Shanks a Lot team members Dave Garr, Charlie Hooten, Rusty Haggard and Jens Jantzen posted the low team gross of 180 last week to catch up to and pass Double H Dirt duffers Scott Pardee, Ty Pardee, Russ Yeager and Tom Kirkland for the league lead in Tuesday Night Men’s action at the Bend last week. Undaunted by Shanks a Lot’s strong round, the Double H Dirt guys did post the low team net of 156 as Scott Parde...

Gary Thompson, Howard Morkert, Ty Pardee and Scott Pardee were the four golfing for Wild Coyote last week. Hagedorn Land Surveying team members Rick Hagedorn, Paul Flemmer, Bernie Groshong and Chuck Manry joined forces to post the low team net of 142 as Flemmer shot the low individual gross of 41 to lead his quartet. Jody Doyle earned low individual net hon...

  • Devils stand out in District 14C meet

    John Hamilton|May 16, 2019

In the end, the plan has come to pass. All season long, Noxon coach Matt Havens has been aiming his track and field team towards the post season, the time of year that means the most. And, lo and behold, his Red Devil boys and girls saved some of their best efforts of the season for the best time – the District 14C meet in Missoula last week, the first level of post season competition. “Great efforts all the way around, all the kids had to really work to place at districts,” Havens said, “and the boys end up winning second and the girls t...

  • Nice sunny mornings mean golfing fun

    John Hamilton|May 16, 2019

When it comes to sunny mornings at River’s Bend, like most Monday mornings during golf season, there is nothing better than being part of the Over the Hill gang. Gathering at the Bend’s scenic nine for another go at golfing fun, 32 par-seeking players went at it again this past Monday morning and another great time was had by all. Leading the charge around the Bend, Mike Gillmore shot the low gross round of 42, while John Beckman and Christy Beaty factored in their handicaps to arrive at the best low net rounds for the Hill-folk men and wom...

  • Hawks enjoy 'fantastic day'

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

What better place to practice for the State B meet than at the stadium where that meet will be held? Getting a good look at the facility where many of the Blue Hawks will hopefully return to May 24-25 for the State B meet, Thompson Falls athletes competed in the annual Archie Roe meet at Legends Stadium in Kalispell Saturday. Given that the Archie Roe is one of the bigger meets of any track and field regular season in Montana and includes schools of all size classes in the state, Hawk head...

  • Hawk golfers are ready for State B

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

The Thompson Falls golf team has been busy playing, getting ready for the State B tournament. In preparation for that big event, coach Mike Bates and his linksters have been playing through on courses across western Montana, at the Loyola Spring Fling at Canyon River in Missoula last Tuesday, at the St. Regis Invitational at Trestle Creek Thursday, and finally, at the Division 3 tournament at Old Works in Anaconda Tuesday. As he has all season, junior Ethan Brown led the Hawk boys in the Spring...

  • Ex-Trotters make splash at Gage meet in Bozeman

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

These Plains Trotters did not just graduate and give up the sport they love – they took their acts to the next level. Former Trotter track and field stars Kayla Holmes, Carley VonHeeder and Hailey Phillips, who led Plains to a string of state titles while in high school at Plains, all made their marks on the annual Tom Gage collegiate meet in Bozeman Friday with outstanding efforts. Holmes won the shot put with a best effort of 43 feet, 9.75 inches and also claimed fifth in the discus with a best spin and throw of 136-2. Von Heeder won the j...

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Duncan and Kaylee are going to the State C golf tournament. The State C will be held Tuesday and Wednesday after practice rounds are allowed Monday, Brown said. Chisholm carded a 97 and Cole a 117 at the St. Regis Invitational at Trestle Creek last Thursday to lead Plains golfers in that event. Backing up Chisholm with the boys, Nick Gumm s...

  • Trotters test MAC, Florence

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

PLAINS – Most of the necessary softball skills can be taught, but you just can't coach confidence. Suffering through what coach Michele Bangen described as a crisis of confidence, Bangen and her Plains-Hot Springs Trotters dropped a doubleheader to visiting Florence in Plains Saturday, falling 6-3 in the first game and 16-6 in the second. In other action last week, the Trotters split with visiting Mission-Arlee-Charlo (MAC), winning the opener 6-3 but losing 12-6 in the nightcap Friday, and d...

  • Breakers blank Hawks twice

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

It seems awful late in the game to be adding new impact players into the mix, but that is what has happened in Western B-C softball the past few weeks. Turning from pretenders to contenders in an instant, the Loyola Sacred Heart Breakers put pitcher McKenna Bessette into the mix for the first time this season and she promptly went out and changed the complexion of the Western B-C league race. The daughter of Loyola coach Brian Bessette, McKenna, a transfer from Missoula Big Sky, just became eligible to play and immediately made an impact....

  • Locals compete in Haines Invite

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Plains, Noxon and Hot Springs track and field teams competed in the Kim Haines Invitational at Missoula Big Sky Saturday. Leading the way for Plains, Kylee Altmiller, who has already qualified for the State C meet in the javelin by exceeding the minimum standard, chucked the spear 112 feet, 4 inches to place second Saturday. Altmiller’s teammate with the Plains boys, Malachi Paulsen threw the javelin 148-4 to grab fourth place in the event on the other side of the meet. Hot Springs’ own wunderkind, freshman Katelyn Christensen, who has alr...

  • Athletes pre-qualify for State meets

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Although you can always earn your way to Montana state track and field meets by placing in the top six (or top five at the Class C level) at the divisional meets, there is a way to guarantee entry into the biggest meets of the season before the divisional meets even arrive. Taking advantage of the Montana state standards program, which allows athletes to pre-qualify for state based on exceeding preset marks and times, six of Sanders County’s finest thinclads have already earned berths into their respective state meets. From Thompson Falls, t...

  • Charlo favored in 14C meets

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

The District 14C track and field meet, set to be held in conjunction with the 13C meet at Missoula Big Sky Friday and Saturday, looks like it will be owned again by powerful Charlo teams on both sides. The real team races this week will likely be to see who can win second place to the mighty Vikings and Lady Vikings. “Charlo is the team to beat for the first place trophy,” Noxon coach Matt Havens said, “for both the boys and the girls this weekend.” In proof of their prowess, the Lady Vikings impressively finished second in team scoring...

  • Over the Hill Gang is back on the Bend

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

The Over the Hill Gang is back, and 41 self-described “old duffers” were out on River’s Bend Monday for the first round of season play. Proving that experience is golden, Mike Gilmore and Lana Nolen shot the low gross rounds of 43 and 51, while Carter Meyer and Barb Wooden factored in their miniscule handicaps to arrive at the low nets of 33 and 35. In other Hill highlights, Ron Beaty was closest to the pin in 2 on No. 1, Buck Adams put the long putts to bed on No. 2 and No. 6, Mike Normandin sank the long putt on No. 3, Don Hansen rolle...

  • Hagedorn shoots low as Whitefish CU leads

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Hagedorn Land Surveying shot the low team gross but Whitefish Credit Union held onto the league lead in Wednesday Night Men’s League action at River’s Bend last week. Rick Hagedorn, Ryan Ostwald, Paul Flemmer and Bernie Groshong put together a team round of 169 to give the Land Surveyors the low gross, while wily Wild Coyote duffers Gary Thompson, Scott Pardee, Jake Helvey and Howard Morkert factored in their handicaps to arrive at the low team net of 141. Ostwald carded the low individual gross of 38 and Jesse Mosher posted the low net of 32....
