  • Double H Dirt puts hurt on Tuesday men

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Double H Dirt put the hurt on the field in Tuesday Night Men’s League golfing action at River’s Bend last week. With Double H Dirt Works leader Scott Pardee shooting the low individual gross round of 39, and his dirty team members Ty Pardee, Jake Helvey and Tom Kirkland playing along, the Dirt brothers arrived at the low team gross of 179 to jump into the league lead. Kirkland also wound up with low individual net of 30 to add to Double H Dirt’s night of domination. When the dust had settled, Double H Dirt Works was in the league lead with 50.5...

  • Hawks host Gary Thompson Invite

    John Hamilton|May 2, 2019

Maybe it was the power of Gary that kept the dark clouds away. The first-ever Gary Thompson Invitational high school golf tournament was held under threatening skies at River's Bend Saturday and it seemed some strange force of golf and/or nature was working to keep conditions playable, even though the forecast was calling for rain and wind. Maybe it really was the goodwill power of Gary that kept that bad weather at bay because the tourney, formerly known as the Thompson Falls Invitational,...

  • View from the Sidelines

    John Hamilton|May 2, 2019

There will always be a place for Randy Pirker at the Field of Dreams, and now everybody will be able to see where Pirk’s Place is each and every time the Lady Hawks play in Thompson Falls. The Thompson Falls High School administration has okayed the purchase of a colorful 50-foot banner with “Pirk’s Place” proudly printed on it, which will be unveiled prior to Saturday’s game with the visiting Anaconda Copperheads. The banner, which is printed in bright TFHS school colors, will be displayed on the outfield fence for every high school softball...

  • Hawks corral Ennis Mustangs

    John Hamilton|May 2, 2019

And then there was victory. Locked into the ultra-tough Western B-C division this season with hardly a break between games with quality teams, the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks stepped out of the division to play a couple of non-conference games in Anaconda Friday and promptly won for the first time this season. Coach Jared Koskela's Lady Hawks actually split a pair of games in Anaconda that day, falling 18-10 to Manhattan and then coming back to buck the Ennis Mustangs 14-9 for that elusive first...

  • County's best test Top 8, Top 10 meets

    John Hamilton|May 2, 2019

Sanders County athletes enjoyed a great Top 8 meet in Eureka last Tuesday, April 23; and one standout from Noxon, triple jumping sensation senior Levi Brubaker, set a new season-best mark for all Montana high schools on the same day in the Russ Pilcher Top 10 meet in Missoula. Competing against athletes from all MHSA classifications in Missoula, Brubaker uncorked the longest triple jump recorded in Montana this year by going an incredible 45 feet even. His closest competitor, Zane Johnson of Cla...

  • P-HS's slow season starts speeding up

    John Hamilton|May 2, 2019

It’s been a relatively slow fastpitch softball season for the Plains-Hot Springs Trotters so far. Things are about to speed up significantly for coach Michele Bangen and her base-stealing, hard-hitting Trotters as the Plains-Hot Springs girls face their biggest week of games of the season. After hosting Thompson Falls for a single game Tuesday in Plains (results of that game were not available at press time), the Trotters will host a pair of crucial doubleheaders Friday and Saturday against fellow Western B-C contenders Mission-Arlee-Charlo a...

  • Thunder and lightning

    John Hamilton|May 2, 2019

There was thunder, there was lightning, it may have been a little bit frightening. And, oh yeah, there was precipitation too, some of it in solid, icy form, and a not-so-comfortable cold wind. It all came down in Whitefish Saturday at the annual ARM meet, and 11 teams went on to endure and live through the latest edition of the ARM in spite of Montana's erratic spring weather. "Yes, it was terrible weather," coach Trenna Ferris said. "There was rain, snow, hail and lightning at different times,...

  • Men of Wednesday back on River's Bend

    John Hamilton|May 2, 2019

The men of Wednesday night are back. The Wednesday Night Men’s League golfers attacked soggy River’s Bend with a par-breaking vengeance last week and Hagedorn Land Surveying (the quartet of Rick Hagedorn, Bernie Groshong, Ryan Ostwald and Paul Flemmer) shot the low team gross of 178, while the Whitefish Credit Union team (Chuck Manry, Rusty Sharp, Wally Gibe and Randy Hojem) used their handicap magic to arrive at the low team net of 131. Flemmer led the charge for the Hagedorn team with a straight-up 40 for low individual gross while Manry post...

    John Hamilton|May 2, 2019

Sparky’s Gutter Time took the early league lead as Shanks a Lot golfers shot the low team gross of 180 and Sparky’s duffers calculated out the low team net of 144 in Tuesday Night Men’s League action at River’s Bend last week. Rusty Haggard, Dave Garr, Jens Jantzen and Charlie Hooten represented Shanks a Lot last week and Kevin Sparks, Tom Holleran, Mike Thilmony and Sean Kelly played for Sparky’s Gutter Time. Sparky’s leads the league standings with 25.5 points and Shanks a Lot and Custom Ventures are tied for second at 23. In other Tuesd...

  • Wardens handcuff Lady Hawks

    John Hamilton|Apr 25, 2019

She who hesitates is lost. Thompson Falls Lady Hawk softball coach Jared Koskela doesn't want his girls waiting around for things to go their way; he wants them to be the ones forcing the action by putting the ball in play. "We have to be more aggressive at the plate, we left way too many runners on base against Deer Lodge," Koskela said. "We had chances for some big innings but couldn't get the runners around." The Lady Hawks finally played their home openers in Thompson Falls last week after...

  • Trotters split with Lions

    John Hamilton|Apr 25, 2019

These games played in mid-April could have seeding implications in May, when the Western B-C divisional softball tournament rolls around. Coach Michele Bangen’s Plains-Hot Springs Trotters split a pair of important games with the Lions in Eureka Saturday, turning back the Lady Lions 5-3 in the opener and falling 6-5 in the second game. The Trotters next scheduled games are neutral-field, non-conference affairs with Ennis and Manhattan Friday in Anaconda. The Trotters will host Sanders County rival Thompson Falls in Plains for a single W...

  • Make your marks

    John Hamilton|Apr 25, 2019

Make your marks while the sun is finally shining. Under glorious, sunny skies, the Thompson Falls Invitational track and field meet was held at Previs Field April 16 and area athletes took advantage of the weather by posting good marks and times when finally given the opportunity. Eleven teams, including squads from as far away as Lincoln and including all four from Sanders County, competed for honors. The host Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys and Lady Hawks both ran away with the team titles in th...

  • Devil boys win third in Seeley-Swan meet

    John Hamilton|Apr 25, 2019

With Easter observances claiming some of the athletes for family-related activities for the weekend, reduced Sanders County squads still competed in the Seeley-Swan Invitational at Missoula County Public Schools Stadium in Missoula Saturday. The Noxon boys team made the biggest splash of any county squad in Missoula as Levi Brubaker, Edison VanVleet and Rylan Weltz all performed well, leading the Red Devils to a surprising third place finish in the 16-team meet. As he has all spring, Brubaker dominated the jumps, winning the triple jump with a...

  • Blue Hawk trio of golfers shine in Bigfork Invitational

    John Hamilton|Apr 25, 2019

In Class B golf, regular season tournaments don’t come much bigger than the Bigfork Invitational, which is annually played at the spectacular Eagle Bend golf course on the shores of beautiful Flathead Lake. Proving to belong among the best prep golfers around, Ethan Brown, Megan Baxter and Nathan Ostwald all went a round on Eagle Bend and shot fine scores in representation of Thompson Falls Thursday. Brown did it best for the Hawks, carding an 84 to win fifth place in boys scoring. Ostwald scored a 98 on his trip around Eagle Bend. Also a k...

  • Trotters drop Breakers

    John Hamilton|Apr 18, 2019

PLAINS – For being an early-season game, this one had a post-season feel to it. The Loyola Sacred Heart Breakers visited Plains Monday for a key doubleheader with the Plains-Hot Springs Trotters and the first game turned into a classic pitching duel between Breaker Kayla Hickethier and Trotter Kassidy Kinzie, both returning All-State B-C players from a year ago. Using a pair of runs scratched out in the bottom of the third inning, the Trotters then stood firm behind the stellar pitching of K...

  • Hawks enjoy the Tripp

    John Hamilton|Apr 18, 2019

It's about time that the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks got with it with their track and field teams. Hitting the track and field en masse for only the second time this season, the Hawks and Lady Hawks competed in the Dave Tripp Memorial in Polson last Friday and left Trenna Ferris as one happy coach after all was said and done. "The kids did very well," Ferris said. "The boys team placed fifth overall with 70 points and the girls took fourth with 72. We had a lot of strong performances from a lot...

  • Prep golfers weather the storm

    John Hamilton|Apr 18, 2019

The weather wasn't perfect for golf, but Plains hosted its annual high school tournament at Wild Horse Golf Course west of Plains Saturday. Under overcast skies with a threat of rain the entire day, players from eight western Montana teams vied for honors in the latest edition of the Plains Invitational. Almost shooting scratch golf, Bucky Crippen fired a 74 and teammate Reed Noyd a 78 to lead the Loyola Rams to the boys title. With the girls, Loyola's Katie Fagg shot 79 to win and Breaker...

  • Heat host Tripp meet

    John Hamilton|Apr 18, 2019

Dave Tripp would have been proud of what his name has wrought. The Hot Springs Savage Heat track and field team hosted 14 western Montana schools in the latest edition of the Dave Tripp Memorial in Polson Friday. A 1970 graduate of Hot Springs who reportedly loved the sport of track and field, Tripp was memorialized forevermore when his name was attached to Hot Springs' annual invitational years ago, and he would have undoubtedly been proud of all the effort and action his name helped to...

  • Coach loves seeing athletes grow

    John Hamilton|Apr 18, 2019

Denise Montgomery likes planting the seed and watching it grow. The sure-fire hall of fame coach (who will most certainly be bequeathed with that honor when she finally does hang up her whistle once and for all), who guided the Trotters to an unprecedented string of state team titles in Class B and Class C track and field meets not all that long ago, loves to see her kids grow up right before her eyes. Her unique teaching/coaching career (she is a long-time elementary teacher in the Plains school system) has given Montgomery the opportunity to...

  • Hawks fall to Eureka, MAC

    John Hamilton|Apr 18, 2019

It is a simple matter of confidence. The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks dropped a pair of doubleheaders last week, falling 12-2 and 21-3 to Eureka in Eureka Saturday, and losing 14-3 and 12-0 to Mission-Arlee-Charlo in Mission Monday. Looking to build up some confidence, coach Jared Koskela and his Hawks will finally play at home Thursday, hosting Deer Lodge for a doubleheader. It is only two weeks into the season and the Lady Hawks have already seen some of the best teams in the Western B-C division, and have taken their lumps from those...

Weltz won the Tripp discus title with s best throw of 127-0, besides taking second in the shot put (42-0) and sixth in the javelin. Brothers Edison and Cade VanVleet, Michael Antonich...

  • Hawks survive long track day

    John Hamilton|Apr 11, 2019

Thompson Falls track and field coach Trenna Ferris was worried about Saturday potentially being a very long day for her team heading into Frenchtown Invitational, which had been moved to Missoula Big Sky due to poor track conditions at the Frenchtown facilities. By the time the varsity and junior varsity meets had concluded in Missoula Saturday, Ferris' worst fears had been fully realized as the meet, which drew over 1,000 competitors from far and wide in Montana, ended up lasting over 12 hours...

For Plains, Kylee Altmiller won the javelin and placed fifth in the long jump to lead the Trotters to 46 points and fourth place in girls team scoring, while the Horsemen placed sixth in the boys meet with 22 points. John Hamilton|Apr 11, 2019

Have you ever thought about how things get their names? A cursory look around the sporting world in Thompson Falls provides a few prime examples. Why is Previs Field, the official place of business for Blue Hawk football and track and field teams, named Previs Field; and how did the Ted Kato Invitational wrestling tournament, one of the longest running tourneys in any sport in Montana and now affectionately called simply the Kato, acquire its distinctive moniker? Although some may think that these places and things were always known by the...
