  • Up and down Trotters lose, win

    John Hamilton|Jan 31, 2019

The Jekyll and Hyde act continues with the Plains Trotters. Coach Eddie Fultz and his Trotters were back to their up-and-down ways last week, playing some of their worst basketball of the season in a 57-31 loss to the Scarlets in Arlee Thursday and then coming back to play some of their best ball yet in a 55-41 win over Seeley-Swan in Seeley Lake Saturday. The win over Seeley was not unexpected but Fultz went into that game with trepidation as guards Willow Sturdivant and Miera Loberg were both out sick. “We came out firing in that game, f...

  • Heat girls scare Scarlets

    John Hamilton|Jan 31, 2019

The Arlee Scarlets are a very good basketball team, but they are not invincible. Leading District 14C with an unbeaten record in league play, the Scarlets got all they wanted from the upstart Hot Springs Savage Heat in Hot Springs Jan. 15 before finally winning 60-46 in one of the closer conference games they have played this season. “I am real impressed with how we played against Arlee,” coach Richard Jackson said. “We proved that we can play with them, and if we had shot a little better from the line it could have been even closer.” The Hea...

  • Slow starts hobble Lady Devils

    John Hamilton|Jan 31, 2019

Slow starts have been the Noxon Lady Red Devils’ Achilles heel this season. Two cases in point, the Devils fell 40-30 to St. Regis in St. Regis Friday, and then lost 37-18 to Charlo in Noxon Saturday. Still battling for favorable position in District 14C standings as the season winds down, the Devils play at league-leading Arlee Friday before returning to Noxon and hosting Hot Springs Saturday. “Arlee is tough, they have a lot of weapons, and we feel like we let our first game with Hot Springs kind of slip away in their place,” coach Ryan...

  • Horsemen corral Hawks in Seeley Lake

    John Hamilton|Jan 31, 2019

When it came down to the fourth quarter, the Plains Horsemen had the late-game goods and moved to a 49-44 win over the Black Hawks in Seeley Lake Saturday. Coach Tyrel Allen’s Horsemen trailed Seeley-Swan, one of the top teams in sister District 13C, 26-25 heading into the fourth period, but outscored the home boys 24-18 in the final eight minutes to snatch the win. “We were able to get the job done in the fourth quarter,” Allen said. “We had kind of a lull there in the second and third quarters but were able to get back on track in the fou...

  • Devils top Tigers, fall to Vikings

    John Hamilton|Jan 31, 2019

The Noxon Red Devil boys split a pair of District 14C conference games on the road last week, going into St. Regis and handing the Tigers a 40-33 loss and then playing Charlo close most of the way, before losing to the Vikings 48-32. Devil coach Bart Haflich was pleased with his team’s defense but would like to see them attacking the basket more on the other end. “Our defense was pretty good last week,” he said, “but we have to score the ball better, and we will be working on that these next few weeks.” The Red Devils play at Arlee Friday an...

  • Thilmony, Sparks win; Hawks take 5th in Kato

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Consider this a dry run for a much bigger deal – the Western B-C Divisional wrestling tournament. Thompson Falls hosted the annual Ted Kato Invitational at TFHS Saturday, exactly two weeks before the Western B-C meet returns to Thompson Falls on Feb. 3, and at that meet the stakes will be considerably higher, with State B-C berths hanging in the balance. Down to five active wrestlers, the Hawks won Kato championships at 113 pounds with Trae Thilmony and at 120 with Roman Sparks, and Shane R...

  • Vanderwalls triumph; P-HS wins 4th in Kato

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

The Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen scored 98.5 team points and placed fourth out of 10 teams in the 2019 Ted Kato Invitational wrestling tournament in Thompson Falls Saturday. With only one week of regular season action remaining, the Savage Horsemen will wrap it up participating in a mixer match in Arlee Friday and hosting a mixer match in Plains Saturday. Coach Jeff Kujala says the mixer in Plains, set to begin at 10:30 a.m., will also serve as senior day for the P-HS wrestlers. Kujala...

  • Lady Hawks sweep Devils, Cats

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Take two and keep on rolling? The Lady Hawks won two non-conference games on the road last week, taking down the Red Devils 43-40 in Noxon Tuesday, Jan. 15 and defeating Clark Fork 47 to something in Superior Friday. A final score from the Clark Fork game was not available at press time, but coach Doree Thilmony said the Hawks did indeed win that game. Hoping the twin wins last week will spark the Lady Hawks for the rest of the season, Thilmony and company have two games against Western B teams this week, hosting Troy Friday and visiting...

  • Gut-check time for Lady Savage Heat

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

There comes a time in every season when a team has to gauge where they stand in the grand scheme of things. “It’s gut-check time,” Hot Springs girls basketball coach Richard Jackson said. “The second half of the season is underway and teams need to start stepping up if they hope to make some noise at tournament time.” Hoping his Savage Heat are at least one of the teams stepping up to the challenge, Jackson and his Hot Springs girls were to have hosted District 14C-leading Arlee Tuesday (results of that game were not available at press time) an...

  • Jekyll or Hyde?

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Dr. Jekylls or Miss Hydes; which girls team is going to show up this time? The Plains Trotters, playing one of their worst games of the season followed one day later by one of their best efforts yet, split games last week, falling 30-19 to the Lady Vikings in Charlo Friday in the stinker and coming back to race past Troy 59-24 in the sweet-smelling one in Plains Saturday. "I don't know what it was all about, but it was like there was a lid on the rim Friday and then it seemed like everything...

  • Lady Devils split with Hawks, Eagles

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

The Noxon Lady Red Devils split games last week, losing a 43-40 decision to Sanders County rival Thompson Falls in Noxon Tuesday, Jan. 15 and coming back to blow out Two Eagle River 66-6 in Noxon Friday. Against Thompson Falls, coach Ryan Weltz’s Devils led 21-15 at halftime before the Lady Hawks won the third quarter 15-4 to take a 30-19 lead, which they never relinquished, into the fourth quarter. “We played well most of the game, had one little mental lapse there in a three to four minute stretch,” Weltz said, “and that was the differe...

  • Improving Heat swamp Two Eagle

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Hot Springs boys basketball coach Cameron Barber has been preaching the team-first concept and his players are buying in to the idea. Making the extra pass to find the open player on the offensive end and limiting the other team's chances by blocking out effectively on the defensive boards, the Savage Heat ran past Two Eagle River 63-35 in Hot Springs Thursday. "We played great ball all around on offense and defense," Barber said of the game with Two Eagle. "We were looking to make the extra...

  • Hawk boys shoot down Devils, Cats

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

The Blue Hawks boys registered a pair of non-conference wins last week, stopping the Red Devils 44-34 in Noxon Tuesday, Jan.15, and blowing past Clark Fork 59-47 in Superior Friday. Returning to Class B competition this week, the Blue Hawks will host Troy Friday and Anaconda Saturday. In Noxon last week, the Hawks jumped out to a 15-4 lead after one quarter and held on from there to post the win. Kade Pardee led the Hawks to the win with 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals, Ryan Schraeder scored 11 points and three steals, Nathan...

  • WHY WAIT?

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Why wait? Why not get it going now? Noxon boys basketball coach Bart Haflich thinks his team needs to start getting its act together, and needs to do that right now. In search of better seeding position heading into the tournament season, which is right around the corner in mid-February, the Devils have two important District 14C conference games this week at St. Regis Friday and at Charlo Saturday. “We need to string some wins together here in the latter part of the season,” Haflich said. “It would be nice to go into the tournament with some...

  • Bad quarter costs Plains

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

It all came down to one really bad quarter of play, and it cost the Plains Horsemen dearly. Fighting for seeding position into the rapidly approaching District 14C tournament, the Horsemen lost a key conference encounter 76-66 to Charlo in Charlo Friday. The Vikings took charge of that game once and for all by running away with the second quarter 26-6 and went from trailing 16-12 when it started to leading 38-22 by the time it was over. And the Horsemen never recovered in the second half. “We dug ourselves a hole in that second quarter, and i...

  • Trae, Roman, Dakota medal

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

Packing a potent 1-2 punch at 113 and 120 pounds, where Trae Thilmony and Roman Sparks won first and second place, and at 182, where Dakota Irvine grappled down second place, the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks scored 77.5 team points and finished in tenth place among 31 teams in the Choteau Invitational Friday and Saturday. “It was a pretty good tournament, we had five kids competing and three of them ended up in the finals,” coach Ian Taylor said. “I am happy with how we did in Choteau, there is no quit in the kids we took over there, and finis...

  • Rising to the challenge

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

After catching the State B champs on the rebound, the Hawk boys almost rebounded with their biggest win of the season. Coach Jake Mickelson and his Blue Hawks, two nights after catching Bigfork on the rebound and falling 63-31 on the road to the defending State B champions, went out and put the fear of the law into the Deer Lodge Wardens, losing only 48-36 in Thompson Falls Saturday. The reason that result is significant is that Deer Lodge had upset Bigfork only a week earlier, breaking a...

  • Vanderwall wins 3rd Choteau title

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

The great Russell Kujala never did this. James DeTienne and Andrew Leichtnam, two other fabled P-HS state champion wrestlers, never did either. But now, Plains senior Josiah Vanderwall has, and he hopes to use it as a springboard for even bigger and better things in the coming weeks. Vanderwall wrestled his way to the 138 pound championship in the Choteau Tournament last week, becoming the first Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen wrestler to ever win three individual titles in the storied annual tourney on the Hi-Line. Peter Carey won fifth...

  • It's Ted Kato time

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

The Ted Kato Invitational is not just another wrestling tournament; in Sanders County it has become an annual tradition. Formerly named the Thompson Falls Invitational, the tourney was re-branded as the Ted Kato Invitational in the mid-90s and has gone by that name ever since. And what a name, and a man, to live up to. Renamed in honor of the late, great Ted Kato, a legendary Montana educator and coach who finished up his teaching and administrative career in this area, the tournament will offic...

  • Trotters down Devils, Eagles

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

The Plains Trotters stayed unbeaten in 2019 by defeating Noxon 36-24 Friday in Plains and Two Eagle River in District 14C basketball action last week, although scoring details from the Two Eagle game in Pablo could not be tracked down at press time. If the season lasts long enough, Trotter coach Eddie Fultz thinks his girls could develop into the top-flight team he thinks they could be by season’s end. “We are playing a little better each week,” Fultz said. “We have still got a ways to go, but I am pleased with our progress to this point....

  • Lady Devils deal with pressure

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

The Noxon Lady Red Devils are young and inexperienced, but they get a little older and a little wiser every time they play. Coach Ryan Weltz and his Lady Devils put two more games of living and learning under their belts last week, defeating the Lady Trojans 48-23 in Troy Thursday and losing to the Trotters 36-24 in Plains Friday. The Devils have two games this week, versus Thompson Falls in Noxon Tuesday (results were not available at press time) and against Two Eagle River in Noxon Friday....

  • Heat girls struggle from line

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

The scourge of the free throw – it has been a nagging problem for coaches since the beginning of basketball time. If you can make most of your free throws, you can win even when you are not playing that well. If you miss most of your free throws, you can lose even when you are playing well enough to win. Hot Springs Savage Heat girls coach Richard Jackson felt the wrath of the missed free throw in both games his team played last week, overcoming the charity stripe blues to win 38-34 in St. Regis Thursday but falling 51-22 to Charlo in the S...

  • Hot Springs boys are a tough out

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

You might outscore the Savage Heat, but you will never truly defeat them that way. No matter what, they will keep after it until the final buzzer, win or lose. Coach Cameron Barber’s persistent if undermanned Hot Springs boys split District 14C basketball games last week, defeating St. Regis 43-35 on the road Thursday and fighting hard but falling to Charlo 55-39 in Hot Springs Saturday. The Heat have two more 14C conference games in the coming week, visiting Two Eagle River in Pablo Thursday and hosting Arlee next Tuesday. The Arlee game w...

  • Lady Hawks look to shore up defense

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

Playing good defense is all about position, about being in the right place at the right time. Suffering through a few defensive lapses, the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks lost twice last week, falling 61-33 to the Valkyries in Bigfork Friday and 66-36 to the Lady Wardens in Thompson Falls Friday. Hoping to find their defensive chops this week, the Hawks were to have visited Noxon Tuesday (results were not available) and will travel to Superior Friday for a game with the Clark Fork Mountain Cats, the...

  • Horsemen ride to 2 more wins

    John Hamilton|Jan 17, 2019

The Plains Horsemen rode to another pair of District 14C conference wins last week, driving past the Noxon Red Devils 40-33 in Plains Friday and taking down the Two Eagle River Eagles 60-32 in Pablo Saturday. In the race for seeding position into the rapidly approaching 14C tournament, the Horsemen will travel to Charlo Friday for a crucial game with the rival Vikings, who knocked off Plains in Plains earlier this season and will likely be gunning to do it again. The Horsemen will host Troy in...
