  • Falcons fly past Lady Hawks

    John Hamilton|Dec 20, 2018

Florence Falcons fly faster. At least right now at any rate. The Florence Falcons flew past the Lady Hawks 78-48 in Western B action at TFHS Friday. Now 0-4 in non-conference play, coach Doree Thilmony and the Lady Hawks host Plains in another non-conference tilt Thursday before opening District 7B play at Troy Friday. The Troy game will be the final game played in 2018. Picked as one of the favorites to contend for Western B title, the Falcons flew out to a lead of 18-6 after one quarter and...

  • Shooting blues hinder Hawks

    John Hamilton|Dec 20, 2018

Free throw shooting blues sunk the Blue Hawk boys last week in Florence. Connecting on only four of 17 free throw attempts, when only one or two more conversions would have made all the difference, coach Jake Mickelson and his cold-shooting Hawks fell 38-37 to the Falcons in a non-conference game Thursday. Mickelson said the Hawks fell behind early in Florence and trailed at one point 20-5 before fighting their way back. The Hawks actually led by four points in the fourth quarter before their poor free throw shooting finally sunk the ship....

  • Lady Devils top Trojans, Eagles

    John Hamilton|Dec 20, 2018

The Noxon Lady Red Devils won twice last week, taking down Troy 47-28 in a non-conference game in Noxon Thursday and knocking off the Two Eagle River Eagles 63-15 in 14C action Pablo Friday. Now 1-1 in 14C play and 4-2 overall, coach Ryan Weltz and his Devils complete the 2018 portion of their schedule hosting Charlo Friday. Once again one of the favorites in the conference, coach Bret Thompson and his Lady Vikings downed Plains in Plains in a key 14C contest last week. “Charlo is very good again, they are a solid team that doesn’t beat the...

  • Devil boys win, improve to 6-0

    John Hamilton|Dec 20, 2018

A win by any other name is still a win. Although there was nothing very pretty about it – in fact, it was actually pretty ugly – the Noxon Red Devil boys defeated Troy 49-46 in Noxon Thursday. Coach Bart Haflich’s Devils improved to 6-0 with an equally ugly 40-30 win over Two Eagle River in Pablo Friday. “It’s good to be 6-0 but we didn’t play well in either game last week,” Haflich said. “We finished the game well with Troy but, obviously we still have a lot of stuff that we need to work on.” Haflich said Troy actually led the Devils with a...

  • Trae leads the way

    John Hamilton|Dec 20, 2018

It is time to reevaluate and move on. "We are pretty much at the halfway point of the season right now," Thompson Falls wrestling coach Ian Taylor said. "We need each kid to reevaluate where we are right now in relation to where we want to be. "Then we can take stock of what we need to do to reach our goals," he added, "because the reality of it is, is that there is not much of the season left once we get past the holidays." The Blue Hawks made one of their bigger annual trips of the season...

  • A winning record

    John Hamilton|Dec 20, 2018

Twelve out of 15 ain't bad. The Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen wrestling team competed in a quadrangular mixer match at Arlee, also including Bigfork and Clark Fork, and coach Jeff Kujala reports that his Savage Horsemen enjoyed a very productive evening of wrestling, winning 12 of the 15 matches they competed in. "It went really well, almost every kid got at least two matches, and we won a lot of those matches with first period pins," Kujala said. "We are extremely pleased with how we...

  • Trotters run past Tigers

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Don't be fooled by the Trotters' name; these Plains girls like to get out and run. There was no trotting around about it Saturday as the Trotters ran past the visiting Darby Tigers 62-42. The Trotters settled the issue early, using a 15-2 win of the second quarter to take a 35-15 lead into halftime and cruising in for the win from there. After a rather pedestrian start to the season (the Trotters edged Drummond 22-18 in Frenchtown two weeks ago), the Trotters seem to have found their running,...

  • Tigers out-point ice-cold Devils

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Points are not supposed to be this hard to come by. The St. Regis Tigers spoiled the Noxon Lady Red Devils’ home opener 31-23 in Noxon Thursday as coach Ryan Weltz’s Devils had trouble scoring from the offset. “I have to give credit where credit is due; St. Regis played good defense and took us out of our flow,” Weltz said. “But we could not seem to find our offensive groove either, it was just not our day.” Weltz’s daughter Delaney was the only Lady Devil who truly got untracked offensively against St. Regis and she scored 16 points to lea...

  • Shutout in the Shootout

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Call it growing pains of the basketball kind. The young Thompson Falls Blue Hawks hosted the boys' portion of the first-ever District 1B-7B Shootout last week, falling 52-47 to the Conrad Cowboys Friday and 76-34 to the Choteau Bulldogs Saturday at TFHS gym. Thompson Falls coach Jake Mickelson cited his team's youth and inexperience playing with each other as factors in last week's games. He thought the Hawks probably should have won the game with Conrad in any event. "We felt like we might...

  • Seconds count

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

A few extra seconds made all the difference. The Lady Hawks dropped a pair of games in the District 1B-7B Shootout in Eureka last week, falling 42-41 to Choteau Friday when some unauthorized extra time allowed the Bulldogs to pull out the last-second win, and then losing to Conrad 72-43 Saturday. Although there were only six seconds remaining with the Lady Hawks leading Choteau 41-40 Friday when the Lady Bulldogs inbounded the ball, those six seconds somehow turned into more like 13 and the ‘Dogs scored at the buzzer to pull out the win. ...

  • Hawks place four in Kinney Classic

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Although their roster was reduced due to undisclosed reasons, the Thompson Falls wrestling team stayed busy last week. Coach Ian Taylor and his temporarily reduced squad of Hawk grapplers participated in the Plains-Hot Springs quadrangular Thursday and then wrestled in the Bob Kinney Classic in Superior Saturday. A Kinney Classic championship by freshman Trae Thilmony at 113 pounds and placing efforts by three other Hawks highlighted Thompson Falls efforts in Superior. Dakota Irvine wrestled...

  • Griffin returns, Darby wins

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Dealing with the return of Griff fell squarely on the lap of new Horsemen hoops coach Tyrell Allen. The Plains Horsemen hosted the Darby Tigers Saturday in a game that marked the return of former Plains Trotter basketball coach Richard Griffin, who went by the short name of Griff while he was in Plains and probably still does in Darby as the new head man for the Tigers. Always eager to coach hoops, Griff was also on the sidelines as Darby's assistant girls coach for the other game Saturday. "I h...

  • Vanderwalls, Carey lead P-HS

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Conrad Vanderwall and Josiah Vanderwall each won second place and Peter Carey third to pace the Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen in the Bob Kinney Classic wrestling tournament in Superior Saturday. The Savage Horsemen also hosted a quadrangular match including P-HS, Thompson Falls, Arlee and Eureka in Hot Springs Thursday, and wrestled in mixer action at Superior Friday evening before the Kinney Classic kicked off the next day. “We are pleased with the efforts over the three days last w...

  • Slow good

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Slow starts aside, the Noxon Red Devil boys look like they will be just fine. Coach Bart Haflich’s Devil overcame slow starts in both games last week but emerged with two more wins, topping the Clark Fork Wampus Cats 60-44 in Clark Fork Tuesday, Dec. 5, and defeating the St. Regis Tigers 53-39 in Noxon Thursday. Now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in District 14C conference play, the Devils have two games on tap this week, hosting Troy in a non-conference game Thursday and visiting the Two Eagle River Eagles in Pablo Saturday in another 14C league tilt. ...

  • View from the Sidelines

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Now you’re just somebody that I used to know…. It gave me pause when I heard this line in a song on the radio last week and got me to thinking about all the faces and names that I have seen passing me by in this job as a sports reporter over the years. One of those faces I saw Saturday in Plains was that of a former hoops coach in that town, a guy I got to know quite well when he was in the sporting world in Sanders County. I not only got to know Richard Griffin through his coaching – either as an assistant or as later on, the head coach for t...

  • Devils begin Weltz era

    John Hamilton|Dec 6, 2018

Welcome back coach! Playing for Ryan Weltz, in his latest reincarnation as a Noxon hoops coach, only this time as the head man for the Lady Red Devils, the Noxon girls split games in the Western C Tip-Off tourney in Frenchtown last week, falling 51-38 to Darby Friday and bouncing back for a 50-18 win over Victor Saturday. The 1-1 Lady Devils will entertain St. Regis Friday in their only scheduled game later this week. The Devils were to have traveled to Clark Fork, Idaho, Tuesday, but results...

  • Thilmony wins; 3 other Hawks medal

    John Hamilton|Dec 6, 2018

Freshman Trae Thilmony won the individual title at 113 pounds and Roman Sparks, Seth Alarcon and Dakota Irvine also earned medals as the Thompson Falls Blue Hawk wrestlers scored 89 points to finish 11th in the Polson Invitational Tournament last weekend. Wrestled for the first time at the spacious Salish-Kootenai Event Center in Pablo, the Polson Invite featured 20 teams this year. Host Polson won the tourney with 202 points, Lake City out of Coeur d'Alene was second with 201 and Frenchtown...

  • H-Men rebound, top Eagles

    John Hamilton|Dec 6, 2018

Some things seem to never change. One of those things is the fact that the Plains boys always seem to have a competitive basketball team, no matter who is coaching them in any particular season. An assistant to Mike Cole the past several seasons, Tyrell Allen coached his first two games as the Horsemen's main man last week. Holding true to the Horsemen's tradition of quality basketball squads, the Plains boys split their first two games of the season in the Western C Tip-Off tourney in...

  • Barber guides Heat boys in tourney

    John Hamilton|Dec 6, 2018

The Cameron Barber era has begun. The Hot Springs Savage Heat boys played hard but dropped two games to District 13C teams at the Western C Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown, falling 53-49 to Darby Friday and 62-54 to Seeley-Swan Saturday. The first two games of Barber’s coaching career in Hot Springs as the head man for the Heat boys were both games that he thought the Savage Heat could have won. “I was really proud of the boys,” he said. “Both of those teams went to divisionals from 13C, so to be in a couple of close games where we only lo...

  • Devils win 2 in Frenchtown

    John Hamilton|Dec 6, 2018

The Noxon Red Devils were seeing the basket with 20-20 vision last week, and the end result was two 20-point wins for the West End boys. Sitting at 2-0 in non-conference action, the Devils were to have played at Clark Fork, Idaho, Tuesday (results were not available at press time) and will host St. Regis Friday in Noxon's District 14C conference opener. Coach Bart Haflich said his team's experience level, their hard-earned hoops maturity, paid off in the Devils' two wins in the Western C...

  • Loggers chop down Hawks

    John Hamilton|Dec 6, 2018

If Saturday’s game in Libby is any indication, finding points could be a problem for the Thompson Falls boys basketball team. The cold-shooting Blue Hawks lost 55-36 to the Ryggs Johnston-led Libby Loggers in both teams’ non-conference season opener. Now 0-1, the Hawks will host the boys portion of the District 1B-7B Shootout this weekend in Thompson Falls. Eureka will play Choteau in the first game at 5:30 p.m. Friday followed by Thompson Falls versus Conrad at 7. On Saturday, Eureka will play Conrad at 1 p.m. followed by the Hawks against Cho...

  • Trotters start to finish

    John Hamilton|Dec 6, 2018

FRENCHTOWN – When they started to finish, the Trotters had found the way their new coach was wanting them to play. The Plains Trotters swept a pair of games in the Western C Tip-Off tournament in Frenchtown last week, nudging by Drummond 22-18 Friday and running past Clark Fork 55-37 Saturday. The 2-0 District 14C Trotters will continue going against 13C teams this week, hosting Darby Saturday in their only scheduled action of the week. Coach Eddie Fultz liked the way his Trotters played in scrapping past the Mountain Cats Saturday after the w...

  • Savage Heat girls 2-0

    John Hamilton|Dec 6, 2018

And just like that, the Savage Heat girls are 2-0. Coach Richard Jackson guided the Heat past Lincoln 36-23 Friday and Seeley-Swan 40-28 Saturday in the Western C Tip-Off tourney in Frenchtown. "We played well enough to win," Jackson said. "I think we can play better but we made the plays we needed to in Frenchtown." Though the Heat got off to a busy start in the Tip-Off tourney, they will now be forced to cool their heels before returning to the court Dec. 13 at Arlee in the first District 14C...

  • It's time to play

    John Hamilton|Nov 29, 2018

And away we go... Busy practicing for their season debuts up to this point, western Montana athletes will hit the courts running and the mats wrestling this week as the winter prep sports seasons begin in earnest. In basketball, three of the county's four schools will participate in the Western C Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown Friday and Saturday. On those same days, the Thompson Falls wrestling team will compete in the Polson Invitational in that annual season-opening grappling tournament. The Thompson Falls girls and boys basketball teams w...

  • Hawk wrestling team starts season Friday

    John Hamilton|Nov 29, 2018

The bar has been set high for Thompson Falls wrestling; and coach Ian Taylor wants to keep that bar up there on high. Taylor’s Blue Hawks enjoyed one of the more successful seasons in recent TFHS wrestling history last year as they won second place in team scoring at the Western B-C divisional tournament and then took down sixth place in the State B-C tourney. Seniors formed the backbone of the 2017-2018 squad as Kaleb Frank won the individual State B-C crown at 120 pounds, Jase Sorenson wrestled down third place at 170, Peyton Irvine c...
