  • Horsemen rocked by Victor Pirates

    John Hamilton|Oct 11, 2018

Some days are diamonds, some days are stone… The Plains Horsemen’s afternoon 8-Man football game in Victor – which they lost to the homestanding Pirates 44-34 – was a rocky one for coach Eddie Fultz and his boys. “We scored some points but gave up some points,” Fultz said. “It seemed like we dug ourselves some holes that we could not climb out of and Victor took advantage. Then we caught a few bad breaks at inopportune times as well.” Fultz said the Horsemen gave up a few touchdowns and fell behind early but were battling back into contention...

  • Hawks fall to Rams; lock and load for Wardens

    John Hamilton|Oct 4, 2018

The playoffs start now for the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks. Sitting at 0-3 in Western B action and 0-6 overall, the Hawks travel to Deer Lodge to take on the 1-2 and 1-4 Wardens Friday night in Powell County. If the Hawks have any hopes of playing in the post season, a win at Deer Lodge is a requirement. "We are not out of the playoff picture, if we can finish strong with Deer Lodge this week, Florence next week and Anaconda the week after that, we still have a chance of getting in," coach Jared...

  • A cruel twist

    John Hamilton|Oct 4, 2018

Call it a cruel twist of fate, the untimely injury to Jacob Peterson of the Plains Horsemen. One of the senior leaders for the Horsemen, and their defensive anchor at his linebacker position, Peterson was benched for the rest of the season last week when an ACL knee injury was diagnosed. Unfortunately, Peterson's absence from the Plains lineup really hurt coach Eddie Fultz and his Horsemen, and ultimately led to a 44-40 loss to Mission in Plains in Western C 8-Man football action Friday. "We...

  • Learning Lady Hawks play in Mineral County, battle hard versus Vals

    John Hamilton|Oct 4, 2018

No matter where, or who they play, the Lady Hawk volleyball team is always up to the task. Coach Sandra Kazmierczak and her Lady Hawks thought they were going to be playing a volleyball tournament in Arlee on Sept. 22 but, after stopping in Plains on the way there that day, found out that they were instead going to be playing in the Mineral County Shootout. After traveling down Highway 135 to St. Regis, the Hawks then went on to claim third place in the Shootout. Kazmierczak was happy with how...

  • Devils win shootout with Bruins

    John Hamilton|Oct 4, 2018

Talk about your high-scoring shootouts. The Noxon Red Devils kept their hand in the Western C 6-Man playoff race last week with a key 73-60 win over the Gardiner Bruins in Noxon Friday. Now 4-2 in Western C play, coach Bart Haflich and his Red Devils will have the week off and extra time to prepare for 5-1 West Yellowstone in a game with definite State C playoff implications. The Devils were scheduled to play St. Regis this week but St. Regis is cooperating with a team in Wallace this season...

  • Savage Heat pummel Panthers

    John Hamilton|Oct 4, 2018

Talking about getting off to a fast start is one thing, doing it is another. The Hot Springs Savage Heat got off to an incredibly fast start and quickly sent the Sheridan Panthers home on the short end of 76-6 score in Western C 6-Man football action in Hot Springs Friday. Now 4-1 in conference action and 5-1 overall, coach Jim Lawson and his hot Heat will host Heart Butte in a non-conference game for homecoming this Friday in Hot Springs. The Heat were supposed to be hosting Lincoln Friday, but the Lynx forfeited the rest of their season last...

  • A moving goal

    John Hamilton|Oct 4, 2018

The goal for Thompson Falls runners in the Mountain West Invitational Saturday was not necessarily to win; it was to run and learn the Missoula course for future reference sake. “Our big emphasis in Missoula was to learn two things: how to run in a huge crowd; and how to attack the hill on the course,” coach Sarah Naegeli said. “Both of these will come in handy when we compete on the same course for the state meet in three weeks.” Along those lines, the race was a big success for the Falls varsity runners, who all competed in the event’s...

  • Trotters are gaining momentum

    John Hamilton|Oct 4, 2018

Start slow and finish fast. That has seemed to be the Plains Trotters modus operandi the past few volleyball seasons, and this year’s Trotter net entourage seems to be following the same script. Playing very well lately, the Trotters avenged an earlier home loss to Noxon by defeating the Lady Red Devils 26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 25-18 in Noxon Thursday. “The key for us is to persevere,” Plains coach Jesse Butcher said. “Our girls have what it takes to be a successful team, we just need to hang in there and come together at the right time....

  • Heat defeat Tigers, fall to Seeley

    John Hamilton|Oct 4, 2018

You win some and you lose some. The Hot Springs Savage Heat volleyball team defeated St. Regis 25-20, 25-18, 25-14 in Hot Springs Thursday before falling 16-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 15-13 in a five-set marathon to the Seeley-Swan Blackhawks in Seeley Lake Saturday. Coach Alisha Pablo and her Savage Heat face another important pair of matches this week, visiting the Plains Trotters Thursday and hosting the Noxon Lady Red Devils Saturday. Makenzie Cannon led the Heat to the win over St. Regis with seven kills and three blocks, Katelyn...

  • Devils split with Troy and Plains

    John Hamilton|Oct 4, 2018

Coach Teri Wilkinson and her Noxon Lady Red Devils split matches in Noxon last week, spiking the Troy Trojans 25-8, 25-16, 25-19 Tuesday before falling to Plains 26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 25-18 Thursday. The Devils have only one match on tap this week, at Hot Springs in another interesting District 10C matchup, Saturday. Kristina Brown led the Lady Devils to the win over Troy, powering down 13 kills, hitting a service ace and digging up 17 Troy kill attempts, Riley Richter directed the Noxon net attack with 24 assists, and Kali Murray added a block...

  • Dog enthusiasts compete in national event

    John Hamilton|Sep 27, 2018

It's all about the dogs for sure but, it is also all about the humans with those dogs. The Dogpaws Club, a collection of dog-training enthusiasts from around western Montana and northern Idaho, including five trainer-dog teams and an alternate from the local Sanders County Dog Training Club, are in Gillette, Wyo., this week for the NADAC (North American Dog Agility Council) National Championships. The NADAC National pre-trials were to be held Tuesday and Wednesday, with the main competition begi...

  • Hawk harriers host XC meet at River's Bend

    John Hamilton|Sep 27, 2018

The Thompson Falls Invitational is always a cool cross country race to participate in. After all, you have the spacious, green fairways and the serene Clark Fork River flowing by, all under the brow of the forested splendor of Flat Iron Ridge, River's Bend golf course is just kind of a cool place to be at any time; but that wasn't what made the Thompson Falls Invite so cool this time around last Thursday. No, the weather is what made the day at this year's local XC meet. "Finally, some cooler,...

  • Winning in the wild, wild west

    John Hamilton|Sep 27, 2018

Which team will end up being the one that finally tames the wild, wild west? Still in the heat of the race to be that team, the Hot Springs Savage Heat went to Gardiner Saturday and upended the homestanding Bruins 54-7 to improve their season record to 3-1 in conference and 4-1 overall in the suddenly whacked-out Western C 6-Man division. What's making the Western C seem a little whacked out right now is some of the other results from last weekend. Previously considered the team to beat and the...

  • Red Devils run past Sheridan Panthers to keep pace

    John Hamilton|Sep 27, 2018

Football lives in Noxon; and it might just survive clear into the playoffs for the second year running. Coach Bart Haflich and his Red Devils walloped Sheridan 55-14 in Sheridan Friday to improve to 3-2 in Western C 6-Man action. Noxon is only a game off the conference lead as previously unbeaten White Sulphur Springs lost 52-32 to West Yellowstone and fell to 4-1 last week, bunching up the teams at the top of Western C standings. West Yellowstone and Hot Springs are also 4-1 (although Hot Springs is 3-1 in league play), and Valley Christian...

  • Horsemen to host Bulldogs for homecoming

    John Hamilton|Sep 27, 2018

Now that they have seen the Flint Creeks, the Charlos and the Arlees of the Western C 8-Man football world, maybe coach Eddie Fultz and the Plains Horsemen can start enjoying themselves a little more. Sitting at 1-4 after a brutal first half of the season – which proceeded with a 68-0 loss to the No. 1 ranked, defending State C champion and now 5-0 Flint Creek Titans, in Drummond Saturday – the Horsemen finally get a shot at some more pedestrian competition when 3-2 Mission visits Plains Fri...

  • Young Hawks won't give in

    John Hamilton|Sep 27, 2018

They never give up and they never give in; the junior high Blue Hawk football team just keeps playing hard right down to the last second of each game. Playing with lots of heart, the undermanned Hawks dropped a pair of games last week, falling 54-32 to the young Vikings in Charlo Tuesday and 32-18 to the Mission Bulldogs at Previs Field in Thompson Falls Saturday. Coaches Michael T. Allen and Brandon Fisher were set to guide the young Hawks against Sanders County rival Plains Tuesday afternoon...

  • Area net squads keeping busy

    John Hamilton|Sep 27, 2018

The Plains Trotters fought off the rival Thompson Falls Lady Hawks in five tough sets in Plains Tuesday and the Hot Springs Savage Heat spiked the Lincoln Lynx in three sets in Hot Springs Thursday to highlight prep volleyball action in Sanders County last week. In other action last week, all four county net squads competed in the Mineral County Shootout in St. Regis and Superior Saturday but results of that tournament were not available at press time. This week will be a busy one for area nette...

  • Heat burn Devils in key Western C tilt

    John Hamilton|Sep 20, 2018

NOXON – The score might have been 64-36 but the effort by both teams seemed more like 50-50. The Hot Springs Savage Heat registered an exciting 64-36 win over the rival Noxon Red Devils in Noxon Friday to solidify their State C playoff position with a 3-1 record. Still in the playoff hunt, the Devils fell to 1-2 but should still have the time and the talent to make a push for a post-season spot as well. Coach Jim Lawson and his Savage Heat visit Gardiner Saturday while coach Bart Haflich and h...

  • Hawk harriers run for fun in Mission Shadows meet

    John Hamilton|Sep 20, 2018

The Mission Shadows Duals cross country run is not your everyday, run-of-the-mill race. It's run with a staggered start and lots of hay bales strategically placed around the course to produce a slightly disorienting effect on the runners. This season's Mission Shadows event, as usual hosted by Ronan, was held at the Mission Mountain Golf Course in Pablo Saturday. "The kids never really know where they are relative to each other in the race (because of the staggered start), and there are a multit...

  • Hawks to host annual XC meet

    John Hamilton|Sep 20, 2018

Thompson Falls cross country coach Sarah Naegeli thanks her lucky stars for River’s Bend Golf Course and the fine people who work there. • Lady Lions top Hawks in five sets in Eureka

    John Hamilton|Sep 20, 2018

Net battles won, net battle lost… The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks won their share of battles in a volleyball friendly with Eureka at Lincoln County High School Saturday, but in the end, the Lady Lions won the District 7B war 28-30, 24-26, 25-21, 25-23, 15-12. Lady Hawk coach Sandra Kazmierczak was not disappointed with the result she was, in fact, glad to see her team play a match like that. “It was a very good match, both teams played outstanding volleyball,” she said. “Eureka managed to pull it out in the end but I am happy with how we played....

  • HORSEPOWER!

    John Hamilton|Sep 20, 2018

When it came right down to it, the Plains Trotters had a little more horsepower. Coach Jesse Butcher's Trotters enjoyed a fine week of play last week, defeating the Clark Fork Mountain Cats 25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20 in Plains Thursday, and then spiking Philipsburg and Victor in Victor Saturday. Scores from the match wins over P-Burg and Victor were not available. The Trotters showed how good they can be in the win over Clark Fork, a co-op team comprised of players from Superior and Alberton....

They did not go down without a fight but the Hot Springs Savage Heat fell 26-24, 15-25, 25-11, 23-25, 15-12 to the Arlee Scarlets in Hot Springs Thursday. Freshman phenom Katelyn Christensen led the Savage Heat at the net with 18 kills, four service aces and four blocks, Mckenzie Cannon also hit four blocks, Sydney Jackson dished out 31 assists and Sage Jackson came up with a team-high 27 digs. • WALKING WOUNDED

    John Hamilton|Sep 20, 2018

It has been a knockout season for the Blue Hawk football team, and not in a good way. Two more Hawk players were knocked out of action with concussions last week, on top of the two that were already KO’d the week before, as the Bonners Ferry Badgers knocked off the Hawks 33-12 in Bonners Ferry Friday. Now 0-4 overall, and 0-1 in Western B play, coach Jared Koskela and his Hawks could be down as many as five starters for this Friday’s conference game with unbeaten Bigfork. The Vikings, by the way, are coming off a 37-0 road win over Eureka las...

  • Horsemen set to meet powerful Flint Creek Titans

    John Hamilton|Sep 20, 2018

Sometimes, final scores can be deceptive. Such was the case with Arlee’s 54-24 Western C 8-Man football win over the Horsemen in Plains Friday. “It was back-and-forth most of the way in the first half, it seemed like it could have went either way early on,” Horsemen coach Eddie Fultz said. “I felt pretty good about the game, Arlee is a decent team and we had our chances against them.” Now 1-3 in conference play and overall, the Horsemen face perhaps their toughest test yet this season Friday when they visit the 4-0 Flint Creek Titans in Drummon...
