    John Hamilton|May 17, 2018

Consider this the final rehearsal before the real thing. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawk track and field teams competed in the Bigfork Invitational Saturday in preparation for this week's big deal – the Western B divisional meet in Frenchtown Thursday and Friday. The Western B and Western C meets will run concurrently in Frenchtown. The Falls boys scored 66 points and the Lady Hawks tallied 54 as both teams finished fourth in team scoring in the eight team meet. The Lady Hawk 1600 meter relay quart...

  • Trotters win Twilight Zone battle

    John Hamilton|May 17, 2018

There is a dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area we call... the Twilight Zone. Black-and-white television dramatics aside, the Plains-Hot Springs Trotter softball team lived through an episode of the Twilight Zone in...

  • Plains track teams hope to move on

    John Hamilton|May 17, 2018

Even without one of their best, they are still among the best. Competing without their defending State C champion Jessica Thompson (who won the C shot put and discus titles in 2017), the Plains Trotters still scored 110 team points and finished second to Charlo, which scored 212, in the two-day District 14C meet in Missoula Friday and Saturday. Making one of their strongest track and field district meet performances in years this season, the Plains Horsemen scored 102 team points to finish third with the boys. In Thompson’s absence, the T...

  • Red Devils shine bright in 14C meet

    John Hamilton|May 17, 2018

The Noxon Red Devil track and field teams made quite a splash in last week’s two-day District 14C meet in Missoula, winning a strong second place in final boys team standings and pulling down a third place trophy with the girls. Coach Matt Havens and his Devil thinclads now head to Frenchtown for the Western C divisional meet Thursday and Friday, to be held in conjunction with the Western B divisional meet. “I am pretty proud of these kids,” Havens said. “Winning second and third in the district with only 10 and six athletes on each team is...

  • Hot Springs athletes throw themselves into competition

    John Hamilton|May 17, 2018

The Hot Springs track and field team doesn’t have a lot of bodies to throw at the competition, but the ones they do have know how to compete. Led by Tyler Carr, the Hot Springs boys scored 28 points, while the Elena McAllister-led Lady Savage Heat scored eight points in the District 14C meet in Missoula Friday and Saturday. Coach Bethany White and her Savage Heat now make plans to participate in the Western C divisional meet in Frenchtown Thursday and Friday. • Hot pitching and hitting keeps Trotters winning

    John Hamilton|May 10, 2018

The Plains-Hot Springs Trotters have the pitching and the hitting and, as a direct result of doing those two things so well, have been winning a lot of games lately. Coach Michele Bangen and her Trotters won three of four games last week, splitting a doubleheader with Mission-Arlee-Charlo (MAC) in Mission Tuesday, losing the first game 7-4 before coming back to win the second 13-8, and returning to Plains Friday and sweeping the visiting Lady Trojans 11-1 and 14-0 in that twinbill. Having...

  • Lady Hawks keep improving

    John Hamilton|May 10, 2018

Go out there, play ball and have some fun. The Thompson falls Lady Hawk softball team lived the dream last week, went out and played ball and had some fun, winning a game from Loyola Thursday and playing Manhattan tough before dropping an 8-7 decision in Drummond Friday. Now looking at a Western B-C divisional tournament play-in game, either at Troy or at Eureka next Monday, coach Jared Koskela and his Lady Hawks, were set to complete regular season play with a game against Drummond in St....

  • Busy as bees

    John Hamilton|May 10, 2018

Sanders County high school athletes will be as busy as bees this week as the spring sports schedules rapidly wind down towards their inevitable conclusions. In track and field, the post season begins in earnest for Class C teams as thinclads from Districts 13C and 14C will gather up in Missoula for the maiden voyage of a combined district meet format Friday and Saturday at MCPS Stadium. District 7B will not have a conference meet this season and teams will instead wait for the Western B divisional track and field meet in Frenchtown May 17-18....

    John Hamilton|May 10, 2018

The annual Archie Roe Invitational track and field meet in Kalispell has a well-earned reputation as one of the toughest meets of any in Montana, at any high school classification. Usually attended by schools large and small from all around western Montana, the Roe Invite is generally regarded as one of the showcase meets of any season in the Big Sky Country. If you can do well in the Roe, chances are you can do well in any meet in Montana. This season, there were 14 schools represented,...

  • Trotters sweep Lady Lions in Western B-C play

    John Hamilton|May 3, 2018

At an all-time high. The Plains-Hot Springs Trotters' team confidence has risen to a new level recently, in large part due to late-inning wins like the one over visiting Eureka in the first game of a Western B-C doubleheader Saturday. That 4-3 win, secured when the Trotters rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, coupled with a 16-11 win in the second game Saturday, puts coach Michele Bangen and her Trotters one slim win away from clinching a spot in the rapidly upcoming Western B-C...

  • Walk, walk, walk... hit, hit, hit

    John Hamilton|May 3, 2018

It was walk, walk, walk and then hit, hit, hit for the Lady Hawk softball team as Thompson Falls softball scored its first win of the season in Mission Friday, taking down Deer Lodge 19-4. Coach Jared Koskela said his team came out ready to play against Deer Lodge and were able to pull away for the win as a happy result. The game was a makeup contest after the teams’ scheduled meeting earlier this season was cancelled due to weather. Koskela said Deer Lodge had trouble with their first pitcher and then had more with the next one. “Their fir...

The end is near. Don’t look now but the high school golfing season is heading for its ending, and Plains coach Lisa Brown and her Fab Five team of freshmen will need to raise their games some if they hope to keep playing. For Class C boys, that means shooting a 100 or lower and for the girls it means scoring 120 or lower in order to qualify for the State C tournament in Fairmont later this month. The St. Regis Invitational to be played at Trestle Creek Thursday will be the final regular season tournament of the spring. After that, area Class C...

  • Red Devils score big in Falls meet

    John Hamilton|Apr 26, 2018

For being a relatively small team, the Noxon Red Devils pack a lot of scoring power. Coach Matt Havens guided his Devil girls and boys through two meets last week, in the Thompson Falls Invitational Thursday and in the Seeley-Swan Invitational at MCPS Stadium in Missoula Saturday. The Devil boys scored 63 points to tie Clark for third in team scoring in the Thompson Falls Invite while the Lady Devils scored 68 points and finished fourth on that side of the meet. Aaron Raynor won second place in...

  • Hawks live, learn, get better

    John Hamilton|Apr 26, 2018

Learning to work your way out of jams is one of the traits of a good softball team. Taking their lumps but learning a lot along the way, the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks dropped a doubleheader with Mission-Arlee-Charlo in Mission last Tuesday, falling 15-0 in the first game and 6-2 in the second, but came away from that twinbill with a newfound sense of team unity and resolve. Coach Jared Koskela said his team was down on themselves before finally fighting their way back in Mission. “We were intimidated in that first game, fell behind 11-0 in t...

The Plains-Hot Springs Trotters won a key Western B-C softball contest in Plains Thursday, scoring two two-out runs on a double by Natalee Deschamps in the bottom of the extra inning eighth to escape the dangerous Anaconda Lady Copperheads and walk off the Trotters’ home field with a 7-5 victory. Kassidy Kinzie went the distance in picking up the pitching win, scattering eight hits allowed across the eight innings, Deschamps finished the game with two hits and drove in three runs, and S...

    John Hamilton|Apr 26, 2018

The Hot Springs boys scored 13 team points and the Lady Savage Heat one in the varsity portion of the Thompson Falls Invitational track and field meet in Thompson Falls Thursday. Although coach Bethany White’s Savage Heat athletes did not score a lot of points in the varsity meet, Hot Springs athletes also took advantage of the junior varsity meets that were run concurrently to the varsity proceedings in Thompson Falls. In the varsity meet, Tyler Carr placed third in both relay races and Kawika Ilac took sixth in the 110 hurdles for the b...
