On November 8, 1889, Montana entered the Union and became the 41st state of the United States of America. This year marks her 130th birthday. Many may call her “the big sky country,” but everyone can agree that Montana is truly “the last best place.” Native Americans were the first to inhabit the land, and today there are seven federally recognized Indian tribes in Montana. The state’s population grew exponentially when gold was discovered in 1852, closely followed by the discovery of coal, copper, lead and silver in 1862. These discoveri...

After a long, dreary winter, bright and bold colors blooming are a welcome sight when you gaze out your window. Planting any spring blooming bulbs in autumn will require a little planning on your end in order to achieve that guaranteed color. While the selection of bulbs out there is quite diverse, the top choices (and easiest) to grow include: tulips, daffodils, crocus, hyacinth, iris, gladiolus, lilies and of course, peonies. All these bulbs can be planted in the fall, about six to eight weeks before the ground freezes. In Montana, that...

This will be around 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.; however, getting out for a 2 a.m. showing can show to be lucky as well. Every year the Orion meteor shower comes into view in the proximity of October 2, and it finishes up right around November 7. This is the time of the year when Earth is passing through the debris that has been left over from Halley’s Comet...
What is human trafficking? It is a form of modern-day slavery, according to Natale Adorne. It is a transaction that exchanges freedom for profit. It is "a crime that hides in plain sight," said Adorne, Program Manager for the Domestic Violence Programs at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy, because this is an infraction that you need to witness as it is happening. She added that it is an atrocious deception that takes place in our very own backyard; Montana. Last Thursday, about 40 people from...

While autumn may bring on the need for hot apple cider, pumpkin carving and hayrides, it is also the optimal time of the season to explore the backcountry. The brilliant colors, crisp, clean air, and the thinned-out crowds carry the motivation to hit the surrounding trails before you have to break out the snow boots. In spite of the beautiful foliage you will be surrounded by, there are a few considerations to take in while you are planning your next expedition. While hikers and hunters can...
