Dan Rowan was sworn in for his second term as mayor last Thursday, even though he had been scheduled to be sworn in as the county's newest commissioner the same day, which he had postponed because he was having second thoughts on leaving as mayor, something he had wrestled with for weeks. Rowan was pleased when appointed the temporary position on November 23, but some Plains residents were unhappy that he was leaving his post, especially after he had just won the election for the second term,...
Moments before midnight on New Year's Eve, more than 100 people ventured out onto the deck of Paradise Hall at Quinn's Hot Springs Resort to brave the 10-degree temperature and to see a few minutes of brilliant illumination against a black sky. This is the first year a New Year's fireworks party was held exclusively for lodging guests, which the resort did this year because of the lingering COVID situation. "We hope to open it up again next year for everybody, but we just have to wait and see,"...
Commissioners met with County Attorney Naomi Leisz and County Sanitarian Shawn Sorenson to discuss sanitation and wastewater treatment violations across the county. Several of the violations detailed at the meeting last week are in Paradise and members of the meeting said some of the perpetrators across the county in question had not yet responded to citations. A few of these issues have been ongoing for several years. “I think it’s really important that the county take a stand,” said Commissioner Carol Brooker on her last official day in of...

It was announced at a special Plains Town Council meeting that bids are going out to build the town's new sewer lagoon with the council voting unanimously to give the winning contractor an additional month to complete the project. Shari Johnson, the town's contracted engineer, briefed the mayor and town council last Wednesday about potential problems with the construction of the lagoon with regard to a possible delay of needed materials. In Johnson's briefing, she believes an additional month wo...
This week, the Paradise Center opened its doors to welcome visitors and show off projects and progress. My mom and I visited on Sunday. There were a few people in and out. I didn't mind it being quiet because I'm one of those annoying people at museums who stops and reads every word of every placard. Our guides through the center, Kathleen and John, were full of information about the building and the exhibits. It was really interesting to visit the old classrooms and see how the preservation group is mixing the old with the new. The Paradise...
You can learn a lot by listening to what someone has to say, especially if you disagree with them. I’m not talking about learning only about what issue they might be talking about. I mean that you can learn a lot about the person you’re listening to. You learn to respect them as a person, and I think it goes the other way, too, that they learn to respect you. My awakening about the benefits of listening came around 1993 when I returned a phone call to an irate constituent. I had been in the Mon...
In Montana, when disaster strikes a family or a community, neighbors unite to help each other. When a disaster of unprecedented worldwide proportions strikes, we Americans unite as well and come to the aid of our neighbors. The Covid-19 pandemic is just such a disaster. Deemed beyond the ability of a neighbor, a town, or a state to respond adequately, Republicans and Democrats in Congress united to pass the CARES Act. This Act passed 96-0 by the Republican-led Senate, on a voice vote by the Democratic-led House and was signed into law by...
4 years ago – January 7, 1982 Commissioner race to top election battles With the start of the new year, the heat is turning up under the political pot in Sanders County for the 1982 elections, which will include most county offices. Traditionally, the offices of sheriff and county commissioner have attracted the largest crowd of candidates and the commissioner’s race this year likely will not be an exception. Monday morning, County Assessor Pat Eldridge became the first official candidate as she filed her nominating petition with Clerk and...

Back for the 40th year, the Keg Bowl, organized by the Blue Hawk Gridiron Club, was a huge success. Fourteen guys of all ages showed up to play, and nearly 200 others showed up to watch the game last Friday. The game commenced with about a foot of snow and 14-degree temperatures. It was two-hand-touch rules, although a lot of the players still tackled. The game pitted the "Young Guns" against the "Silver Bullets" and the total score was 58 to 8, with the Silver Bullets coming out on top. Mike Al...
A new year brings new beginnings. As always, it’s time to let the weight of the past go, to make room to carry what tomorrow may bring. This time of the year, work slows down quite a bit, which allows me the opportunity to recuperate from the busy holiday season. I find it interesting that as soon as that clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, my head wanders right along to spring. I’m done with the snow; I’m done with the cold and I want to start planning for warmer weather. I’m sure I’m not alone in this endeavor. While it is important t...
Many people started 2022 with a lazy Saturday morning. About 20 people braved the below-freezing temperatures for the annual New Year's Day Fun Run in Thompson Falls, sponsored by the Clark Fork Valley Running Club. Sarah Naegeli has been helping organize the run for 23 years. She said many people have been there most years, but she is the only one who has made it every year. The runners started the 2K and 5K courses in 12 degree temperatures, but the sun peeked over Eddy Peak as they started...

She attended kindergarten through third grade in Thompson Falls, Montana, and fourth grade through high school graduation in 2020 in Noxon. Elizabeth touched many lives during her time with us.
