  • It's a girl!

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

It’s a girl, she was born early Monday morning, and she was 7 pounds, 6 ounces and 24.5 inches long at berth. And her name is Tyler Wynne Fultz, the newest addition to the Plains Trotter basketball family. Proud papa Eddie Fultz was still at Clark Fork Valley Hospital Monday morning tending to his wife Rheanna and his new baby girl, but took some time to talk basketball. The coach of the Trotters, Fultz guided his team to two wins before the blessed event occurred last week, trouncing Two Eagle River 63-9 in Plains Thursday and outlasting N...

  • Horsemen roll to wins

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

If you are playing the Plains Horsemen lately, do not ask for whom the bell tolls, the bell tolls for thee. Although a Hemingway quote may seem an odd basketball analogy to make, the Horsemen have been writing a book lately about different ways to win basketball games. Last week, it was a little bit of offense mixed in with a lot of defense that produced two more Plains wins as the Horsemen downed the Two Eagle River Eagles 70-43 in Plains Thursday before traveling down to Noxon Friday and stopping the Devils 59-18. Coach Tyrel Allen and his...

  • Heat fall to Vikings in 14C battle

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

It’s hard to believe he said it right after the game, but he is saying it now. “That loss is the best thing that has ever happened to us,” Hot Springs coach Richard Jackson said Monday evening. “I predict it will help us get our heads right for the rest of the season.” The Charlo Lady Vikings scored a key District 14C win over Hot Springs in Charlo Friday, staving off the Savage Heat 43-40. Although he would not directly criticize the officiating in the game, Jackson did point to the fact that Hot Springs was awarded only nine free throws fo...

  • Lady Red Devils keep on improving

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

These are the kind of games that build teams. Coach Cortney Vohs and her Noxon Lady Red Devils scored an encouraging split in home games last week, running past Troy 50-22 Thursday, and then taking Plains into overtime before losing a wild 58-54 decision to the Trotters Friday. Although she liked the win over Troy, Vohs was far happier with the loss to Plains. “That was a very encouraging game for our girls, proving that we can play with a team like Plains,” she said. “That was our best game yet and something that we can build on from here on o...

  • Red Devils rise and then fall

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

From the best to the worst, all in the matter of about 24 hours. The Noxon Red Devil boys split home basketball games in the West End last week, upending Troy 61-53 Thursday during the best of times, and falling 59-18 to Plains during the worst of times. Currently sporting a respectable record of 5-5, the Devils play at Clark Fork, Idaho, Thursday and in Pablo versus Two Eagle River Saturday. The Devils were to have played at Thompson Falls Tuesday but results of that game were not available Red Devil coach Ryan Weltz was left scratching his he...

  • Savage Heat boys hit some 14C bumps

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

The Savage Heat boys hit a couple of bumps in the District 14C road and lost hard-fought conference games to St. Regis in Hot Springs Thursday and to Charlo in Charlo Friday. The 61-57 loss to Charlo sticks in coach Scott Fredrickson’s mind the most. “We’re still smarting a little from the Charlo game,” he said. “We were up by five points with about three minutes left but Charlo ended up coming back to win. “We had a chance to pull the ball out and run some clock but waited too long,” he added, “and they were able to take advantage.” Cha...

  • MHSA installs girls wrestling for '20-21

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

It’s official, girls wrestling will be a high school sport in Montana beginning next school year, the Montana High School Association announced at its annual meeting in Billing early this week. To offset the addition of a girls sport and to satisfy Title IX regulations, boys powerlifting was also added for the 2020-2021 school year. As outlined in the proposal, girls wrestling will be a winter sport with the proposed weight classes of 103, 113, 126, 138, 152, 170 and 205. Initially at least there will be no girls divisional tournaments, only a...
