  • Officer joins T. Falls police

    Annie Wooden|Jan 24, 2019

Growing up, Morgan Grimm didn't dream of being a police officer. She didn't wear the costume at Halloween. But a passion for helping people led her to the position. Grimm, 34, recently joined the City of Thompson Falls Police Department. Born in Bozeman, Grimm grew up in a military family, primarily in California. She started her professional career in healthcare, attending nursing school in California and working at hospitals. Grimm said she always wanted to come back to Montana. He parents...

  • Thilmony, Sparks win; Hawks take 5th in Kato

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Consider this a dry run for a much bigger deal – the Western B-C Divisional wrestling tournament. Thompson Falls hosted the annual Ted Kato Invitational at TFHS Saturday, exactly two weeks before the Western B-C meet returns to Thompson Falls on Feb. 3, and at that meet the stakes will be considerably higher, with State B-C berths hanging in the balance. Down to five active wrestlers, the Hawks won Kato championships at 113 pounds with Trae Thilmony and at 120 with Roman Sparks, and Shane R...

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

The Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen scored 98.5 team points and placed fourth out of 10 teams in the 2019 Ted Kato Invitational wrestling tournament in Thompson Falls Saturday. With only one week of regular season action remaining, the Savage Horsemen will wrap it up participating in a mixer match in Arlee Friday and hosting a mixer match in Plains Saturday. Coach Jeff Kujala says the mixer in Plains, set to begin at 10:30 a.m., will also serve as senior day for the P-HS wrestlers. Kujala...

  • Lady Hawks sweep Devils, Cats

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Take two and keep on rolling? The Lady Hawks won two non-conference games on the road last week, taking down the Red Devils 43-40 in Noxon Tuesday, Jan. 15 and defeating Clark Fork 47 to something in Superior Friday. A final score from the Clark Fork game was not available at press time, but coach Doree Thilmony said the Hawks did indeed win that game. Hoping the twin wins last week will spark the Lady Hawks for the rest of the season, Thilmony and company have two games against Western B teams this week, hosting Troy Friday and visiting...

  • Gut-check time for Lady Savage Heat

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

There comes a time in every season when a team has to gauge where they stand in the grand scheme of things. “It’s gut-check time,” Hot Springs girls basketball coach Richard Jackson said. “The second half of the season is underway and teams need to start stepping up if they hope to make some noise at tournament time.” Hoping his Savage Heat are at least one of the teams stepping up to the challenge, Jackson and his Hot Springs girls were to have hosted District 14C-leading Arlee Tuesday (results of that game were not available at press time) an...

  • Jekyll or Hyde?

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Dr. Jekylls or Miss Hydes; which girls team is going to show up this time? The Plains Trotters, playing one of their worst games of the season followed one day later by one of their best efforts yet, split games last week, falling 30-19 to the Lady Vikings in Charlo Friday in the stinker and coming back to race past Troy 59-24 in the sweet-smelling one in Plains Saturday. "I don't know what it was all about, but it was like there was a lid on the rim Friday and then it seemed like everything...

  • Lady Devils split with Hawks, Eagles

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

The Noxon Lady Red Devils split games last week, losing a 43-40 decision to Sanders County rival Thompson Falls in Noxon Tuesday, Jan. 15 and coming back to blow out Two Eagle River 66-6 in Noxon Friday. Against Thompson Falls, coach Ryan Weltz’s Devils led 21-15 at halftime before the Lady Hawks won the third quarter 15-4 to take a 30-19 lead, which they never relinquished, into the fourth quarter. “We played well most of the game, had one little mental lapse there in a three to four minute stretch,” Weltz said, “and that was the differe...

  • Improving Heat swamp Two Eagle

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Hot Springs boys basketball coach Cameron Barber has been preaching the team-first concept and his players are buying in to the idea. Making the extra pass to find the open player on the offensive end and limiting the other team's chances by blocking out effectively on the defensive boards, the Savage Heat ran past Two Eagle River 63-35 in Hot Springs Thursday. "We played great ball all around on offense and defense," Barber said of the game with Two Eagle. "We were looking to make the extra...

  • Hawk boys shoot down Devils, Cats

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

The Blue Hawks boys registered a pair of non-conference wins last week, stopping the Red Devils 44-34 in Noxon Tuesday, Jan.15, and blowing past Clark Fork 59-47 in Superior Friday. Returning to Class B competition this week, the Blue Hawks will host Troy Friday and Anaconda Saturday. In Noxon last week, the Hawks jumped out to a 15-4 lead after one quarter and held on from there to post the win. Kade Pardee led the Hawks to the win with 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals, Ryan Schraeder scored 11 points and three steals, Nathan...

  • WHY WAIT?

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

Why wait? Why not get it going now? Noxon boys basketball coach Bart Haflich thinks his team needs to start getting its act together, and needs to do that right now. In search of better seeding position heading into the tournament season, which is right around the corner in mid-February, the Devils have two important District 14C conference games this week at St. Regis Friday and at Charlo Saturday. “We need to string some wins together here in the latter part of the season,” Haflich said. “It would be nice to go into the tournament with some...

  • Bad quarter costs Plains

    John Hamilton|Jan 24, 2019

It all came down to one really bad quarter of play, and it cost the Plains Horsemen dearly. Fighting for seeding position into the rapidly approaching District 14C tournament, the Horsemen lost a key conference encounter 76-66 to Charlo in Charlo Friday. The Vikings took charge of that game once and for all by running away with the second quarter 26-6 and went from trailing 16-12 when it started to leading 38-22 by the time it was over. And the Horsemen never recovered in the second half. “We dug ourselves a hole in that second quarter, and i...

    Annie Wooden|Jan 24, 2019

A local therapeutic boarding school is facing three civil complaints brought on by families of former students. The three complaints name Reflections Academy, Inc., Executive Director Michele Manning and employee Chaffin Pullan as defendants. All three were filed in 20th Judicial District Court. The first lawsuit, filed October 9, 2018, alleges that the plaintiffs’ minor teenage daughter “was sexually abused and subjected to other physical, psychological and emotionally abusive conduct” by Pullan while she was a resident at Reflections Acade...

  • Property owners respond to sewer project

    Annie Wooden|Jan 24, 2019

The City of Thompson Falls last Thursday mailed notices to property owners of the intent to create Special Improvement Districts (SIDs) for the proposed wastewater treatment system. Property owners now have until Feb. 8 to provide written input on the creation of the SIDs. At the Jan. 14 City Council meeting, council members were informed that if 51 percent of property owners provided written opposition to the creation of the SIDs, the project could not continue. Mayor Jerry Lacy said this week that the Bond Council misinformed the city, and...
