  • Devils rebound with 2nd chances

    John Hamilton|Jan 25, 2018

Noxon boys basketball coach Bart Haflich thinks basketball is all about second chances. If you create enough second chances for your team, you stand a lot better chance of winning games. And that means being aggressive when it comes to rebounding, particularly on the offensive end. "Rebounding is key," he said. "If you can give yourself second chances and get some putbacks on offense, everything goes a lot better." Hitting the boards hard in Pablo Saturday, the Red Devils defeated the...

  • Lady Hawks are learning fast

    John Hamilton|Jan 25, 2018

Mental toughness is not something that just happens. In basketball, it is something that needs to be learned through effort and repetition. Giving themselves some quality reps in mental toughness, the Lady Hawks dropped a pair of competitive non-conference games in Thompson Falls last week, falling 57-40 to visiting Clark Fork Tuesday, and rallying strong before losing 49-45 to Noxon Thursday. Coach Doree Thilmony and the Lady Hawks return to action Saturday hosting Anaconda. Thilmony appreciate...

  • Devils ice Hawks at FT line

    John Hamilton|Jan 25, 2018

When the game was on the line, the Lady Red Devils had ice in their veins, and no one more so than cool Kristina Brown. The Devils shot down the Lady Hawks largely from the free throw line in Thompson Falls Thursday, winning 49-45 after connecting on 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, with Brown canning seven of eight attempts during that stretch. The Devils had built a 12-point lead late in the third quarter before the Lady Hawks charged back to make things interesting in the fourth quarter. More interesting than they needed to be acc...

  • Heat boys playing numbers game

    John Hamilton|Jan 25, 2018

There are a few things outside of the Hot Springs boys basketball team's control. Things like the number of players they have and whether they will be affected by injuries and/or foul problems in any game. When you only have six players to begin with and are right on the cutting edge of being able to play or not, one injury or illness has the potential to severely hamper a team's ability to simply play games. Coach Ricky DePoe and his gang of six Hot Springs Savage Heat are looking at just such...

  • Injury bug bites Lady Savage Heat

    John Hamilton|Jan 25, 2018

Injuries are a part of any sport. The minor ones you endure and play through, but the major ones are a different story. Big hurts can change entire seasons for teams. The Hot Springs Savage Heat girls team will play on through the rest of the season without junior starter Brianna Gray, who suffered a knee injury during last Thursday’s game at Arlee. The Heat lost that game 51-29 before coming back to defeat Two Eagle River 48-32 in Hot Springs Friday. The Heat have two non-conference games with District 13C teams on tap this week, hosting V...

  • Trotters split with Vikes, Trojans

    John Hamilton|Jan 25, 2018

The Plains Trotters split games last week, winning the most important one 36-31 over Charlo in Plains Thursday and losing to Troy 52-47 in overtime in a non-conference game at Troy Friday. The District 14C win over Charlo avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Vikings for coach Jess Nagy and her Trotters. Trailing 26-23 going into the fourth quarter, the Trotters won the final eight minutes 13-5 to pull out the victory. Jessica Thompson netted 15 points to lead Plains, Lindsay Laws added 10, Kassidy Kinzie five, Kara Altmiller four and Haley...

  • H-Men set to tangle with No. 1 Arlee

    John Hamilton|Jan 25, 2018

Now 11-1 after wins over Charlo and Troy last week, coach Mike Cole and his Plains Horsemen have the chance to avenge their only loss of the season in Arlee Thursday. Coach Zanen Pitts and his unbeaten Warriors, who last lost a game to Plains back in December of 2016, will come into the game as the No. 1 ranked Class C team in Montana. Rarely challenged themselves this season, the Horsemen rode to two more wins last week. Against Charlo in Plains Thursday, the Plains boys took control of the game with a 20-5 win of the second quarter and ended...

  • Cut the carbs, not the f lavor

    Sara Czerwinski|Jan 25, 2018

by Sara Czerwinski It's the new year, the time when most people pledge to eat healthier, my family included. I would like to share our journey here and maybe that will be enough motivation to keep us going. I am the world's worst meal planner; we're lucky if I give dinner a second thought before my husband starts to get a little hangry. At this point I wander into the kitchen, check all the cupboards, the fridge and the freezer, several times over, looking for inspiration to avoid our back-up...

    Jan 25, 2018

Montana State University’s (MSU) Center for Mental Health Research and Recovery is collaborating with MSU Extension and One Montana to evaluate an internet-based Cognitive Behavior Therapy (iCBT) program designed to help Montanans cope with stress and improve their mood. Project leaders hope to recruit hundreds of Montanans for the study. The iCBT program, called Thrive-Montana, has an interactive video-based interface designed to respond to input from users and provide guidance in areas that users deem important in their lives. So far in o...

  • Sleds, snow, tunes aid Search & Rescue

    Justin Harris|Jan 25, 2018

They would come looking for you if you needed them, so the public showed up to look out for them. Sanders County Search & Rescue is an all-volunteer operation made up of brave individuals who are on-call, day or night, rain, snow or shine. “The mill levy scheduled for us is barely enough to keep us going, so we can only effectively operate with the help of donations,” said Sanders County Sheriff Deputy Jerry Johnson, who moonlights as a member of the rescue team, “this year’s fundraiser was a huge boost for us.” The theme of the night was...
