  • Paradise Center gets grant for mini roundhouse

    Ed Moreth|Jan 27, 2022

The roundhouse at the Paradise Railroad Station has been gone for more than 80 years. In the near future there's going to be a brand new roundhouse in town, but it won't be at the railroad station and it won't be for fixing trains. The Paradise Center received a grant of just over $31,000 from the Montana Office of Tourism earlier this month, which will go toward the center's newest addition, a mini-roundhouse. "Most, if not all, of the needed lumber may be donated by a Plains resident and so is...

  • Neighbors mobilize to free deer

    Ed Moreth|Jan 27, 2022

A group of Plains residents worked together last week to free a young whitetail doe that was caught in a rope attached to a plastic sled. A deer on property along McCrea Road was found partially immobilized last Thursday morning and although the device might not have caused death to the animal, it would have been hard for it to quickly get away from a predator. The entanglement probably also weakened the deer. The sled had fallen off the top one of Marc and Ellen Childress' hay bales a week...

  • Health board seeks officer

    John Dowd|Jan 27, 2022

The Sanders County Board of Health is looking for a new health officer, the position formerly held by Nick Lawyer. The board met last week to discuss filling the position, which has been vacant for more than three months. One issue they are faced with is new legislation that changes the way the board operates as well as the responsibilities and functions of the health officer. Since House Bill 121 passed in the last session, local health boards now operate in an advisory capacity, with the final decisions being made by the commissioners. As...

  • EMT training includes suicide awareness, prevention info

    Miriah Kardelis|Jan 27, 2022

In an effort to bring suicide awareness and prevention to the forefront of the conversation, Whiteline Consulting and Training, an Emergency Medical Service company, hosted Roosevelt County deputy sheriff Frederick Lee as part of the Hot Springs Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training course. The public was invited to sit in on the two-hour lecture. "How do we start a conversation about suicide," Lee asked to those in attendance. "You begin with your story." On July 27, 2018, Lee's son...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Jan 27, 2022

The other day while driving to Plains, I noticed that familiar gray ceiling. After a beautiful sunny Sunday with not a cloud in the sky, a blanket of clouds hanging over the valley on Monday. If that doesn't give you a case of the Mondays, I don't know what will. You can feel that cabin fever settling in with the inversion in the sky. Most everyone is tried of the snow, the endless ice we've seen, and ready for sunnier days. It's hard to stay positive when it's cold and messy outside when all you really want to do is curl up on the couch with...

  • Constant pressure for sewer

    Jan 27, 2022

It has come to our attention that there is to be another sewer board meeting this week. Apparently, the newly assembled folks on the board wish to re-introduce the community to this person who we are told represents Great West Engineering. Why they assume we need to be introduced to her again is beyond us. Having seen her on Zoom, we were left with the impression that she might be someone we would be unable to approach. However, it would appear that we are to deal with the very aggressive folks who intend to force their will on all of us yet...

  • Montana Viewpoint

    Jim Elliott|Jan 27, 2022

It is 10 a.m. on January 21, 1991, when Montana State Senator Eleanor Vaughn (D-Libby) calls the joint meeting of House and Senate State Administration Committees to order and Senator Harry Fritz rises to present, for the third consecutive legislative session – 1987, 1989, and now, 1991 – a bill to create a paid state holiday honoring the legacy of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. It has been a national holiday since 1986, and Montana is one of the two remaining states that has yet to cre...

I am often asked by people what kind of knife I prefer. When using a knife for bushcraft and survival, I have found that really, anything sharp will do. Most of my experience has come from clip point knives, but there are several styles that work great. Though that is often the case, there are numerous defining features that transform a decent knife into a great one. The first and foremost feature is that a great survival knife is made of carbon steel rather than stainless. There is a myth that the prior can be used to create sparks against...

    John Dowd|Jan 27, 2022

According to Ron Kazmierczak, the past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, the group has been organizing their own local march for over 20 years. "We support life. We believe life starts at conception," said current Grand Knight Patrick Walt at the march in downtown Thompson Falls last Friday. The group advertises in the paper prior to...

  • Kato presents tough competition

    Annie Wooden|Jan 27, 2022

Sanders County wrestlers took home five medals as the Blue Hawks hosted the 26th Annual Ted Kato Memorial tournament on Saturday. Seniors Trae Thilmony of Thompson Falls and David Schulze of Plains took first place in their respective weight divisions, both pinning their opponents in the first period of their championship matches. Schulze won his quarterfinal match by pinning Whitefish's Carter Moran, then won a 3-0 decision over Shelby's Harold Miller. It was another tough match against...

The teams Thursday were tied at 14 after the first quarter, but Hot Springs held on...

  • Hawks host mixer ahead of Kato

    John Dowd|Jan 27, 2022

Thompson Falls faced off against four other teams Friday, before hosting the Ted Kato Memorial tournament on Saturday. The mixer gave wrestlers a chance to get some time on the mat without any worries about team placements. Two mats ran at the same time and wrestlers from all schools cycled through same weight matchups. Only conference matchups would see personal scores changed for the season. Thompson Falls wrestling coach Mike Thilmony highlighted a few matchups of the night. One was Thompson...
