  • GLOBAL EFFORT

    Shana Neesvig|Jan 30, 2020

Roughly 8,500 miles away, efforts are being taken to fight fires as Australia experiences one of the worst fire seasons on record. Here in Sanders County, residents are doing what they can to support Australia's recovery from this devastation. For two weeks Trout Creek's first through fourth grade students spent the end of their school days crafting pouches for koalas and sugar gliders that have received injuries or lost their mothers in the fires. "There are a lot of animals in trouble because...

  • Getting back 'way more than you give'

    Shana Neesvig|Jan 30, 2020

Recently, Huckleberry, Inc. shared news that a new Huckleberry Festival Chairperson had been appointed. The passing of the torch occurred last Thursday during the Huckleberry Festival business meeting, when former chair Debb McNary officially gave the reins to Elizabeth Haagenson, who stepped forward ensuring the Huckleberry Festival will be celebrated for its 41st year. "I attended my first festival meeting in October of 2013 at Liz Citrino's home in Trout Creek," stated McNary. "I thought I...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Jan 30, 2020

We have to admit, we've been planning our snacks for the Super Bowl since before we knew who would be playing this weekend. Super Bowl Sunday is big business for the cities that host the big game (this year it's in Miami), and also for communities across the country. According to an article in Produce Retailer, 65 million avocados were sold in the days leading up to last year's NFL championship game. Some of the TV sales we've seen are better than you get with Black Friday deals. It's one of the busiest Sundays in the United States. And...

  • Street Smart

    Blaine Blackstone|Jan 30, 2020

Last week I saw a news item and video that showed a police officer being attacked and kicked while on the ground wrestling with a person he was trying to arrest. No one intervened to help the officer. I’ve also seen recent videos (plural!) of police officers in New York getting buckets of water thrown on them as they were trying to do their jobs. These are just two recent examples of behavior that demonstrates a disturbing and dangerous lack of respect for law enforcement. Now we are again s...

  • Be safe and mind your manners

    Jan 30, 2020

Hello neighbors, Per last week’s Ledger, I see that the Trout Creek Bridge schedule is set. I was diligently anticipating a mention of Black Tail Rd., Martin Creek Rd. or Stevens Creek Rd. and the Noxon (one-lane) Bridge, I read none the such. This is a disappointment because I suspect our neighboring town of Trout Creek will avoid Blue Slide Road when they need to come west. I was reading that the Blue Slide Road Detour is getting a “check/fix,” new signage will be posted, “no large trucks, new guard rails & striping,” Montana Dept. of Transp...

  • Remember When?

    Sherry Hagerman-Benton|Jan 30, 2020

7 YEARS AGO • FEBRUARY 1, 1950 MERCURY HITS RECORD LOW OF -36 This month chalked up some new marks on the Forest Service weather records which go back to 1918. Those winters your grandfather likes to talk about may have been worse, we don’t know but this is a new generation and all reckoning starts from now. Our low Sunday night of -36 compares as follows: In December of 1918 a low of -32 was recorded. The next reading down in those regions was in the winter of 1936-37 when it dropped to a -30 in January. In precipitation a new record als...

  • Prevent injuries in winter

    Jan 30, 2020

The possibilities of winding up on your rear more than your feet this winter seem endless. Follow these 10 tips from Sanders County Public Health to make sure you’re staying safe when walking around in snowy and icy conditions: 1. Walk slowly and carefully. Wear boots or other slip-resistant footwear. 2. Use special care when getting in and out of vehicles. Use the vehicle for support if you need to. 3. Watch for slippery floors. 4. Try to avoid carrying items or walking with your hands in your pockets; this can reduce your ability to catch y...

The GFWC Thompson Falls Woman's Club helped with the national effort to purchase and distribute Dr. Seuss books by providing enough funds for library director Lynne Kersten to replace four books and add seven new titles. The donation comes just in time for the library to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2. The Thompson Falls Woman's...

  • CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

    Shana Neesvig|Jan 30, 2020

Let's pick up four stones and stack them on top of one another while placing them on a build plate. Sounds easy, right? Now, how about doing it all with a robot in less than two minutes, 30 seconds? That was the challenge presented to the Thompson Falls robotics group this year. Together, the four-person team made light work of it at the annual Montana robotics competition held a couple weeks ago. The squad was randomly paired with one of 35 other teams to jointly complete the task at hand for f...

    John Hamilton|Jan 30, 2020

Ready for prime time. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawk wrestlers, as part of a weekend celebrating the 1979 and 1980 Thompson Falls State B-C championship teams, made a strong showing at the Ted Kato Memorial tournament at TFHS, putting five grapplers in the finals (with two winning titles) and finishing fourth in team scoring in the 13-team meet. It appears that the Hawks are now primed and ready for the stretch run of the season, which will reach its zenith at the State B-C meet in Billings, Feb....

  • Horsemen prep for Warriors

    John Hamilton|Jan 30, 2020

PLAINS – Games with the Arlee Warriors aren't what they used to be for the Plains Horsemen. After all, over the course of the last several years, the powerful Warriors were the undisputed kings of District 14C basketball, going on to win two of the last three State C tournaments and finishing second in the other, and were traditionally the most feared opponents for any 14C foe. Things have changed this year however as Arlee has been realigned into Class B, taking the conference-counting p...

  • Trotters nearly topple Vikes

    John Hamilton|Jan 30, 2020

PLAINS – Maybe the Lady Vikings are not invincible after all. The Plains Trotters put a scare into the undefeated, No. 4 ranked Charlo girls Thursday in Plains, taking a 26-25 lead into the fourth quarter and then hanging in there with the powerful Vikings for most of the last eight minutes before finally falling back to the 39-30 loss. “We were only four down with about a minute and a-half left,” Plains coach Eddie Fultz said. “We did a lot of good things in the first three quarters but some mistakes in the fourth really hurt us.” Still, th...

  • Hawks knock off Devils, Cats

    John Hamilton|Jan 30, 2020

Knocking down shots and knocking off opponents. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys notched two more wins last week, overwhelming Noxon 68-34 in Thompson Falls last Tuesday (Jan. 21) and moving past Clark 64-48, also in Thompson Falls, Thursday. The Hawks, after having Thursday’s scheduled game at Troy switched to Tuesday (and results were not available), have only one non-conference game this week, at Anaconda Saturday. Originally from Philipsburg (only 30 miles away from Anaconda), Hawk coach Jake Mickelson knows what it’s like to play in Ana...
