Wildlife managers are requesting to change white-tailed deer regulations in two hunting districts in northwest Montana. FWP Region 1 biologists have submitted a request to the Fish and Wildlife Commission to limit hunting opportunity to antlered bucks in hunting districts 122 (the Thompson River area in Sanders County) and 130 (the Swan area in Lake and Missoula counties). For the last three years, hunters have been able to harvest a white-tailed deer of either sex during the first week of the general hunting season, as well as the last week of...
There's nothing like the great outdoors. During these short, dark, dreary winter days, nothing brings a body to life more than the feeling of cool, crisp air tingling cheeks, noses, fingers and toes. The deep snow and balmy 25-degree weather did not stop Noxon or Thompson Falls schools' 46 junior high students from participating in the annual Winter Tracks program, sponsored by Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness (FSPW) last Thursday. In fact, it appears that these conditions are beneficial...
The Committee For Safe Swimming (CSS) is once again stepping up to help the Town of Plains repair the E.L. Johnson Memorial Pool. Janice Hanson, president of the nonprofit organization, said they placed a symbolic thermometer at McGowan’s Grocery Store to show the fundraiser progress to the community. The thermometer was placed at the store last Monday and they’ve already received a $250 donation, in addition to the $20,000 the group had in its kitty. Hanson said the group picked McGowan’s to show the thermometer because of the heavy traff...
Only the best wrestlers get the opportunity to compete on the sport's biggest stage in Montana at storied Metra Park in Billings in the State All-Class Tournament, and the road to Billings runs through Thompson Falls this time around. Hoping to qualify for the most important tournament of this or any season, Western B-C grapplers will gather in Thompson Falls Saturday where they will face a simple math test counting one to four – if you finish in the top four of your weight class, you are in, a...
The Hot Springs Savage Heat boys won’t go away without a fight. The battling Savage Heat won two out of three games last week, falling 86-50 to District 14C-leading Arlee in Hot Springs Jan. 22, and then vanquishing Victor 64-51 in Victor Thursday before hosting Valley Christian Saturday and sending the Eagles home on the short end of a 68-49 score. Now 3-5 in 14C play, coach Cameron Barber and his Heat face two important conference tests this week, hosting Plains Friday and visiting Noxon Saturday. The reason these games are important is s...
When you are missing a few players, with a couple of them being starters, you need the others on the roster to step up when given the opportunity. With several of those "other" players turning in big-time efforts, the Thompson Falls boys basketball team played very competitively last week, dumping Troy 54-46 Friday to clinch second place in final District 7B standings, and playing well enough to win but being bumped off 60-59 by Anaconda Saturday. Both of those games were played in Thompson...
The Lady Hawks got after the Troy Trojans in a big way in Thompson Falls Friday, and ended up running the Trojans out of the gym 48-19 by the time it was over. “Pressure defense was the key,” coach Doree Thilmony said. “We were able to force some turnovers and dictate the pace of play.” Megan Baxter recorded yet another double double to lead the Hawks to the win, scoring 12 points and securing 12 rebounds, besides swatting away four Troy shot attempts and coming up with three steals, Jody De...
The Jekyll and Hyde act continues with the Plains Trotters. Coach Eddie Fultz and his Trotters were back to their up-and-down ways last week, playing some of their worst basketball of the season in a 57-31 loss to the Scarlets in Arlee Thursday and then coming back to play some of their best ball yet in a 55-41 win over Seeley-Swan in Seeley Lake Saturday. The win over Seeley was not unexpected but Fultz went into that game with trepidation as guards Willow Sturdivant and Miera Loberg were both out sick. “We came out firing in that game, f...
The Arlee Scarlets are a very good basketball team, but they are not invincible. Leading District 14C with an unbeaten record in league play, the Scarlets got all they wanted from the upstart Hot Springs Savage Heat in Hot Springs Jan. 15 before finally winning 60-46 in one of the closer conference games they have played this season. “I am real impressed with how we played against Arlee,” coach Richard Jackson said. “We proved that we can play with them, and if we had shot a little better from the line it could have been even closer.” The Hea...
Slow starts have been the Noxon Lady Red Devils’ Achilles heel this season. Two cases in point, the Devils fell 40-30 to St. Regis in St. Regis Friday, and then lost 37-18 to Charlo in Noxon Saturday. Still battling for favorable position in District 14C standings as the season winds down, the Devils play at league-leading Arlee Friday before returning to Noxon and hosting Hot Springs Saturday. “Arlee is tough, they have a lot of weapons, and we feel like we let our first game with Hot Springs kind of slip away in their place,” coach Ryan...
When it came down to the fourth quarter, the Plains Horsemen had the late-game goods and moved to a 49-44 win over the Black Hawks in Seeley Lake Saturday. Coach Tyrel Allen’s Horsemen trailed Seeley-Swan, one of the top teams in sister District 13C, 26-25 heading into the fourth period, but outscored the home boys 24-18 in the final eight minutes to snatch the win. “We were able to get the job done in the fourth quarter,” Allen said. “We had kind of a lull there in the second and third quarters but were able to get back on track in the fou...
The Noxon Red Devil boys split a pair of District 14C conference games on the road last week, going into St. Regis and handing the Tigers a 40-33 loss and then playing Charlo close most of the way, before losing to the Vikings 48-32. Devil coach Bart Haflich was pleased with his team’s defense but would like to see them attacking the basket more on the other end. “Our defense was pretty good last week,” he said, “but we have to score the ball better, and we will be working on that these next few weeks.” The Red Devils play at Arlee Friday an...
