  • 4-H members learn about quality

    Shana Neesvig|Feb 1, 2018

Sanders County 4-H members are known for raising quality livestock. And it is no wonder why... they learn what it takes to produce excellence from the very beginning. Youth who are in their first year of raising a 4-H market animal are required to complete training in "Quality Assurance." The course must be repeated, in more depth, when the member reaches high school age. Parents of livestock members are also required to attend the training once. Juli Thurston, MSU Extension Agent for Sanders Co...

  • Super Hawks seek community support

    Justin Harris|Feb 1, 2018

With all the activities and technology available to kids these days, it's a wonder any parent hears complaints of boredom from children. Compare their demeanor to the lives of disabled individuals – there are no afterschool groups, chess club, sports or regular formal dances – yet, one would be hard pressed to find happier people. Luckily there are organizations and people who understand the plight of families caring for the disabled and give their time and talents to create events and hap...

  • A HELPING HAND

    Feb 1, 2018

MANY THANKS - Staff at Little Bitterroot Services in Thompson Falls accepted a donation from Ron Kazmierczak with the Knights of Columbus. The funds will be used to support athletes at Montana Special Olympics. The donation to Little Bitterroot Services, as well as $500 to the Thompson Falls Super Hawks team, came from the annual Tootsie Roll drive. The Knights of Columbus solicit donations from local businesses, and also pass out Tootsie Rolls at Harvest Foods in exchange for donations during...

  • Back Country Horsemen coming to Trout Creek

    Shana Neesvig|Feb 1, 2018

It appears Trout Creek will be home to the most recent Montana Back Country Horsemen (MBCH) Chapter joining the national organization. About three months ago Doc Milham, President of Trout Creek’s MBCH, dreamed up the idea of forming a local group to serve horse lovers in Sanders County. He is confident MBCH will vote in the new chapter at their April 6-8 meeting in Lewistown, Mont. The club currently has 19 members, but is hoping to add to that. “We welcome anybody. They do not even need to have a horse, someone always has an extra horse to...

  • Judgment day arrives

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

So that's what the rest of the Western B-C wrestling division, and Thompson Falls in particular, is up against. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawks finally got an opportunity to see and put their hands on the Eureka Lions in a wrestling match last week, facing off with the defending Western B-C and State B champions in the Bulldog Invitational duals tournament in Whitefish Friday. In Whitefish, the Hawks lost an abbreviated dual with Eureka 52-24, defeated Libby 32-30 and won a 42-24 decision from...

  • P-HS wrestlers ready to challenge for divisional honors

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

In order to become a champion, wrestlers need to step out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves every so often. Hoping to become a State B-C champion in these next few crucial weeks of the season, Plains-Hot Springs senior Daniel Uli stepped out of his comfort zone and stepped up a weight class to get a tougher match last week. Ranked No. 2 in Montana B-C wrestling at 126 pounds, Uli took on the No. 3 132-pounder in Eureka's Hank Dunn in the Eureka mixer last Tuesday. Uli was right in...

  • Points, points and more points

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

Offense was the name of the game Saturday when the Anaconda Lady Copperheads played the Lady Hawks at TFHS and, in the end, the Sydnie Peterson-led Copperheads had enough of the stuff to get by the Hawks 89-68 Saturday. Led by freshmen Megan Baxter and Jody Detlaff, who scored 25 and 16 points each, respectively, the Lady Hawks never lost contact with Anaconda, but could not quite keep up the torrid pace set by the hot-shooting Copperheads. A senior, Peterson went off for a game-high 34 points...

  • Lady Devils split with Tigers, Vikings

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

The Noxon Lady Red Devils are in it for the long haul, and played two more District 14C conference games last week, defeating the Lady Tigers 34-29 in St. Regis Friday, and falling to Charlo 49-31 in Noxon Saturday. Up next for coach Bart Haflich and his Noxon girls are the Arlee Scarlets in Noxon Thursday and the Hot Springs Savage Heat in Hot Springs Saturday. Haflich said foul troubles caught up with the Lady Devils against Charlo. When there are only seven players total on your roster, foul troubles take on added importance. “That’s the fir...

  • Positive Savage Heat move to 2 more wins

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

The power of positivity. On a three-game winning streak extended by victories over Victor (48-8) and Valley Christian (41-19) in Hot Springs Thursday and Saturday, Lady Savage Heat coach Richard Jackson wants his girls to keep on thinking good things this week when they visit Plains Thursday and host Noxon Saturday. The key District 14C games with their Sanders County brethren aside, Jackson sees room for positive thinking about his young team. “These girls are all finding their individual niches, how they fit in on this team,” he said, “an...

  • Trotters gain a favorable split

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

This is what basketball coaches call a favorable split. Coach Jess Nagy and her Plains Trotters scored a favorable split last week, winning an important District 14C conference test 45-39 over the league-leading Scarlets in Arlee Thursday, and dropping a 48-42 decision to District 13C Seeley-Swan in a non-conference game in Plains Saturday. Clearly, it is better to win the conference games and lose the non-conference ones if given the choice. Not that Nagy and her Trotters are willing to...

  • Hoops star wars

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

May the force be with you... and not with your opponents. It was Star Wars on the basketball court in Anaconda's storied Snake Pit Saturday as Thompson Falls' Danny Hoisington, playing Luke Skywalker, and the Copperheads' Braxton Hill, filling the role of Darth Vader, led their teams in a high-flying Western B hoop battle. With Hill, a recent signee to the Montana Grizzlies football team, setting a new Anaconda career basketball scoring record while scoring 33 points, out-dueling Hoisington,...

  • Warriors turn back Horsemen again

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

It wasn’t pretty but, in the end Plains’ 80-39 loss in Arlee Thursday was one of the closest games the unbeaten Warriors have been in this season. Horsemen coach Mike Cole was not very impressed with the level of play in the District 14C marquee matchup, which featured the 11-1 Plains boys and the 12-0 Warriors coming in. “It seemed like there was no rhythm to the game, it just wasn’t well-played by either team,” he said. “Arlee ended up getting it done but I look forward to some better basketball if we eventually play again.” It would seem th...

  • Times a-changin' for HS boys

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

The times they are a-changin’ for the Hot Springs boys basketball team. Fighting through the season with only six players so far, the Heat’s playing roster is expected to swell to nine this weekend when three eighth graders get their required practices in and become eligible for Saturday’s game with Noxon in Hot Springs. Before that however, the six-strong Savage Heat have one more undermanned game to play, in Plains Thursday. Hot Spring coach Ricky DePoe has no complaints about how his gritty group of boys have played so far, and looks forwa...

  • Devils beginning to believe

    John Hamilton|Feb 1, 2018

If believing in yourselves is half the battle, the Noxon Red Devil boys are well on the way to becoming all they can be. Coach Bart Haflich and his Devils split a pair of District 14C basketball games last week, running past St. Regis 55-10 in St. Regis Friday and falling 59-49 to Charlo in Noxon Saturday. Interestingly, Haflich feels the loss to Charlo was where his Devils gained the most mental ground. “That game was a good confidence builder, having belief in yourself is half the battle,” Haflich said. “We may not have won that game but w...

  • Try these snacks for low-carb game day

    Sara Czerwinski|Feb 1, 2018

by Sara Czerwinski I'm just here for the snacks. As a not-so-diehard football fan, the Super Bowl is usually the only game I watch each year. It comes with a party and everyone brings their favorite snacks to share. I love party food, but it's not exactly "carb friendly" most of the time. Some of our favorite low carb party treats include bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers, chicken wings and, of course, the go to meat and cheese platter. But what about some of those snacks that aren't so low carb? I...
