  • Rockin' the oldies

    John Hamilton|Feb 6, 2020

It just goes to show that winning never goes out of style. The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks, wearing the same uniforms as a previous generation of Hawks who won the Western B championship in 2003 did, swept past Anaconda 64-49 at TFHS Saturday. Sporting those old championship duds of Falls legends like Katie Holleran, Amanda Grazier and Victoria Kazmierczak wore so successfully so many years ago, the Hawks looked the part of divisional champs in the way they worked past a very good Anaconda team....

It must be nice, being in control of your own destiny. To have earned the ability, the right to call your own shots. Ranked No. 7 in the most recent Montana Class C power poll and now an impressive 13-1 overall, the Hot Springs Savage Heat girls have put themselves in good position as the season winds down. Now it is a matter of finishing the regular season strong and taking that impetus gained into the tournaments. The Heat beat Valley Christian 66-29 in Missoula Friday in their only game last week. John Hamilton|Feb 6, 2020

People are starting to sit up and take notice of the Plains Trotters. The Trotters defeated the Arlee Scarlets 61-50 in Arlee Saturday in their only game last week. With the District 14C tournament only two weeks away (in Ronan Feb. 20-22), coach Eddie Fultz and his Trotters have been playing well lately, and are hoping that improvement continues. Plains has two 14C conference games on tap this week. The Trotters host 12-1 Hot Springs, the No. 7 rated Class C team in Montana, Thursday before hitting the road for a game at St. Regis Friday....

  • Lady Devils keep getting better

    John Hamilton|Feb 6, 2020

There are moments in time where teams are made. When individual athletes find the way to meld their talents together for the betterment of the group – to come together as a true team. Noxon Lady Red Devil coach Cortney Vohs thinks her young team did just that in St. Regis last week, running past the Tigers 45-28. "We could not have played better, I am so proud of how the girls came together," she said. "We had much better ball movement on offense and played good team defense. It was a good t...

  • Devil boys turn back Vikings

    John Hamilton|Feb 6, 2020

The Noxon Red Devils are beginning to realize their basketball potential. Coach Ryan Weltz's Devils scored an encouraging split in District 14C basketball last week, falling to the Tigers 63-49 in St. Regis Friday but playing well in that game, and scoring a 62-54 win over visiting Charlo in Noxon Saturday. Encouraged by the strong play of his team last week, Weltz will guide the Noxon boys into Hot Springs Saturday in their only scheduled action this week. "The Charlo game was a good win for...

  • Warriors run past H-Men

    John Hamilton|Feb 6, 2020

Horsemen coach Tyrel Allen said the Arlee Warriors would be one of the best teams his Plains boys would face this season. The Warriors proved Allen right by blitzing past the Horsemen 75-54 in a non-conference game at Arlee Saturday. Now 11-3 overall but still 6-0 in 14C play, the Horsemen will put that unbeaten conference record on the line this week, hosting Hot Springs Thursday and going to St. Regis to play the dangerous Tigers Friday. St. Regis’ only 14C loss this season was to the Horsemen in Plains back on Jan. 9. “They haven’t lost...

  • Eagles knock off Heat

    John Hamilton|Feb 6, 2020

The Valley Christian Eagles have come a long ways in only a few weeks. Rebounding from a 53-43 loss to the Savage Heat in Hot Springs back on Jan. 3, the resurgent Eagles knocked off the Heat 77-60 in Missoula Saturday. Hot Springs coach Scott Fredrickson was impressed with how the Eagles played against his Heat the second time around. “They played well, that was the best man-to-man defense we have seen all year,” Fredrickson said. “Their coach has them playing good basketball, they will be a threat if they continue to play like they did again...

  • Hawks get bit in the Pit

    John Hamilton|Feb 6, 2020

The Blue Hawks got down and dirty in the Snake Pit with the hometown Copperheads and live to tell about it. Coach Jake Mickelson and his Thompson Falls boys traveled to Anaconda Saturday and lost their most recent tussle in the Snake Pit, the ‘Heads’ official unofficial name for their place of business, 76-59 to the hometown boys. Mickelson thought the Hawks played well but that hot shooting by the Anaconda crew may have been the difference. “It was a game of streaks – we started out down 10-0 but fought back to take the lead in the second...
