    John Hamilton|Feb 7, 2019

The survivor series continues. Four Thompson Falls Blue Blue Hawk wrestlers survived Saturday's Western B-C tournament by placing in the top four in their weight classes, and now move on to the State B-C tournament, part of the Montana All-Class meet to be wrestled in Metra Park in Billings Friday and Saturday. "Surviving is the name of the game, you have got to get there to do anything at state," Hawk coach Ian Taylor. "These four kids have earned this opportunity, now it is matter of going...

It's crunch time in the wrestling season and the Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen have gotten rolling at precisely the right time. • Falls boys fall in Eureka

    John Hamilton|Feb 7, 2019

Although they had a chance at winning in the late going, the Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys fell 42-41 to the Eureka Lions in Eureka Friday. Coach Jake Mickelson and his Hawks also dropped a 72-23 decision to Loyola in Missoula Thursday. With only two weeks of regular season play remaining, the Hawks will host Mission Thursday in their only game this week. Mickelson said scoring was the problem in Eureka, even though Thompson Falls still had a chance to win, but missed two free throws that would...

  • Horsemen bounce back, win

    John Hamilton|Feb 7, 2019

The bounce-back effect can be strong in basketball. Witness the Plains Horsemen’s experience with it last week as they were bounced 66-35 by the Savage Heat in Hot Springs Friday and then promptly bounced back with a convincing 83-54 win over the visiting St. Regis Tigers in Plains Saturday. In the stretch run of a fight for seeding position into the District 14C tournament in Pablo Feb. 14-16, the Horsemen have two more 14C games this week, at Noxon Friday and versus Two Eagle River in Pablo Saturday. “This is the time we need to be pla...

  • Savage Heat boys catch fire

    John Hamilton|Feb 7, 2019

They are like a heat wave, burning in District 14C. The Hot Springs Savage Heat boys are heating up as evidenced by their strong performance last week in torching the Plains Horsemen 66-35 in Plains Friday and then burning the Red Devils 36-29 in Noxon Saturday. Obviously playing their best basketball of the season, coach Cameron Barber and his Savage Heat boys hope to keep up the heat on their opponents this week in another pair of 14C games, hosting St. Regis Thursday and completing regular season action at Charlo Saturday. Barber said the...

  • Devil boys falter against Heat

    John Hamilton|Feb 7, 2019

It’s all about getting to the basket and establishing a presence there. If you can get to the rim and get some shots down the rest will take care of itself. Coach Bart Haflich’s Noxon Red Devils had trouble getting to the rim last and lost twice, 72-27 to the two-time defending State C champion Arlee Warriors in Arlee Friday, and 59-44 to the Hot Springs Savage Heat in Noxon Saturday. Nearing the end of the regular season, the Devils will wrap it up this week hosting Plains for Noxon’s senior night. “We have no excuses,” Haflich said. “Ar...

Coach Richard Jackson will guide his Savage Heat through two more 14C contests this week, hosting St. Regis Thursday and visiting league-leading Charlo Saturday in their final games before the conference tournament the following week. “The more games we can win, the better position we can put ourselves in for the tournament,” Jackson said. “Ou...

  • Very young Lady Devils lose two

    John Hamilton|Feb 7, 2019

The Noxon Lady Red Devils are very young and inexperienced but getting better every time they step on the floor. Coach Ryan Weltz and his precocious Devils took two more learning steps last week, falling 61-22 to District 14C-leading Arlee in Arlee Friday, before returning home and being outlasted 36-29 by the visiting Hot Springs Savage Heat Saturday. The Devils will complete regular season play hosting Plains Friday. “We are a young team that is kind of learning about playing in game situations as we go,” Weltz said. “We are playing hard,...

  • Lady Hawks improve but lose 2

    John Hamilton|Feb 7, 2019

The hard work is beginning to pay off as the number of turnovers continues to trend downward and the ball handling improves but it still wasn't enough as coach Doree Thilmony and her Lady Hawks fell twice last week, losing 72-35 to Loyola in Thompson Falls Thursday and 56-32 to Eureka in Eureka Friday. Thompson Falls has only one scheduled game this week, hosting Mission Thursday. "We are getting better," Thilmony said. "We are handling the ball better, breaking pressure defense better and...

  • Trotters top Heat, fall to Tigers

    John Hamilton|Feb 7, 2019

The shots weren’t falling last week, and the end result was a win (51-45 in Hot Springs Friday) and a loss (49-41 to S. Regis in Plains Saturday) for coach Eddie Fultz and his Plains Trotters. The Trotters will finish up regular season play with another pair of 14C conference games this week, visiting Noxon Friday and hosting Two Eagle River for senior night Saturday. Fultz said he didn’t think his girls played very effective defense in either game last week, and looks for the Trotters to improve in that area in what is left of the regular sea...
