Outside of China, London has the largest Chinese New Year celebration in the world. In Sanders County, the township most likely to hold a celebration for a non-traditional holiday would be Hot Springs. Whether sun or snow (the holiday can fall anywhere between January 21 and February 20), for years Hot Springs has been throwing some kind of bash for the Chinese New Year. While the streets of Hot Springs will undoubtedly show signs of the festivities, much of the fanfare will stem from the Symes...
SUPERIOR – It is time for all Montana prep wrestlers to make their final stands. And each and every one of those grapplers dreams of being the last man standing at his weight, having his hand raised in triumph after their final match and being declared a Montana state champion. Team and individual champions will be crowned at the Montana All-Class wrestling tournament at Metra Park in Billings Saturday, and coach Ian Taylor and his Blue Hawks hope to be in the Class B-C winners' circle when a...
SUPERIOR – Plains-Hot Springs coach Jeff Kujala said he had a feeling when the season started that six of his wrestlers were good enough at the sport and tough enough mentally to earn their ways to the State B-C tournament in Billings at season's end. That feeling turned into reality Saturday in Superior as six Savage Horsemen – Daniel Uli (first at 126 pounds), Josiah Vanderwall (second at 132), Conrad Vanderwall (third at 120), Austin Stafford (third at 145), Luke Lile (fourth at 160) and Pet...
They are the big, bad Bigfork Vikings, and the equally big, bad Bigfork Vals. One of the best boy-girl basketball shows in Montana, Bigfork’s powerful teams will await Thompson Falls in Bigfork for a District 7B doubleheader Saturday. And both the Hawk boys and the Lady Hawks will have challenging games on tap once they get there. The Bigfork boys are currently 15-0 and the top-ranked Class B team in Montana while the Vals are 14-1 and ranked No. 3 among all girl B teams in the state. Clearly, coach Jake Mickelson’s Hawk boys and coach Dor...
The Noxon Red Devil boys endured a close call in Hot Springs, escaping the Spa City and its charged-up Savage Heat 47-46 in District 14C action Saturday. Coach Bart Haflich was happy to get out of town with the win. The Savage Heat were bolstered by the addition of a few junior high players which just became eligible after getting their required 10 practices in (please see other story). “Hot Springs played pretty well, you have to give them credit,” Haflich said, “we really struggled with them. Fortunately we put a run together in the fourt...
This is not a drill. The hoop wars in District 14C girls basketball will continue at least through the next few weeks. Now salty veterans of those wars, the battle-tested Noxon Lady Red Devils split a pair of 14C conference games last week, falling 49-31 to Arlee in Noxon Thursday and surviving through a tough game with the Savage Heat 42-37 in Hot Springs Saturday. Noxon coach Bart Haflich said the Lady Devils played well at times in both games, but also endured painful stretches through each. Against Arlee, the Devils played the powerful...

by John Hamilton The Hot Springs Savage Heat boys did not quite win, but they did put the fear of God into the Devils before falling back to a 47-46 loss to Noxon in Hot Springs. Buoyed by the addition of three eighth grade players who became eligible for this game, the fired-up Heat led most of the way in those boys’ first varsity game ever. With the addition, the Heat’s roster swelled to a total of nine enthusiastic players. “It was a fun game, we played really well most of the night,” Hot Springs coach Ricky DePoe said. “We got a little bi...
Coach Richard Jackson’s Lady Savage Heat played good basketball but lost a pair of District 14C games to Sanders County foes last week, falling 49-37 to Plains in Plains Thursday and 42-37 to Noxon in Hot Springs Saturday. Both games featured strong fourth quarter comebacks from the young Savage Heat. The Heat outscored Plains 15-6 in the final eight minutes and out-tallied Noxon 14-8 in the fourth period. McKennzie Cannon canned 14 points to lead Hot Springs against Plains, Sydney Jackson added eight, Stacy Gray six and Sage Jackson, Lizzie F...
