  • Volunteers make railroad ties for display

    Ed Moreth|Feb 8, 2024

Three people are helping to manufacture stacks of railroad ties for a display at the Paradise Center. Instead of being soaked in creosote, the volunteers will use glue and black paint and instead of being eight and a half feet long and weighing 100 to 300 pounds, they are just over an inch in length and weigh mere ounces. Doris Haines and Donna Hadley, both of Plains, and Gary Sanks of Paradise spent more than an hour stacking the HO scale railroad ties for the Paradise Center's train display...

  • Top spellers compete in county bee

    Ed Moreth|Feb 8, 2024

It took nine rounds of words - invisible, handle, trifle, regiment, dreadlocks, patience, spectral, seclusion, and essential - but no verbiage the judges threw at Talon Ferlan could stop him from becoming the 37th Annual Sanders County Spelling Bee champion. The Plains Junior High School seventh grader was one of seven boys and 14 girls to participate in the spelling bee at the county courthouse on Friday afternoon. For just over 45 minutes, pronouncer Tom Eggensperger of Thompson Falls...

    Shannon Brown|Feb 8, 2024

The Hot Springs fire department has a big job to fill with 800 square miles of area to cover. Fire Chief Randy Woods said their area is 45 miles from one end to the other. The area includes timber and grasslands on the western third of the Flathead Reservation. "We work hand in hand with the Salish Kootenai Tribal Council," Woods said. • Practicing old skills

    Annie Wooden|Feb 8, 2024

I've been making an effort lately to practice some skills that I haven't used very often in the last few years, and I think are becoming lost arts. The first is writing hand-written cards. I have a friend who, after every holiday or birthday, has her kids sit down and write thank-you cards. It makes a person feel special to get a card in the mail. It's nice to know people think of you with texts and emails, but taking the time to write a card, address the envelope and put it in the mail is worth the extra effort. Opening your mailbox to find mo...

  • 4-day week has disadvantages

    Feb 8, 2024

Dear school superintendent and school board members, I am sending this email to express my concerns with the possible switch from a five day to four day school week. I am writing as a licensed clinical social worker, who has been working with children/teens and their families for over 20 years. I do not need to educate you on this poor rural community and the economic disadvantages many of these children/teens and families are experiencing today. The school has always been a refuge in times of stress and insecurities for many of those who are...

  • A Few Thoughts on Taylor, Travis and world domination

    Sandy Compton|Feb 8, 2024

Questions: Why does halftime at the Super Bowl last 100 years and feature stuff football fans have no interest in? Is it just me, or do others have no idea what or who Usher is? Does the NFL book halftime entertainment to fool people not remotely interested in football into watching. Do these people Tevo halftime and fast forward through the ads? Is halftime a plot by Budweiser to give fans time to run out for more beer? And just who the heck is Taylor Swift? If she’s so damned cool, why isn’t SHE the halftime show? I confess: Until I saw Ms....

The council issued two building permits - one to Claude Gray for a chicken house and the other to Leonard Kelly for an extensio...

    Shannon Brown|Feb 8, 2024

  • Winter festival goes on in rain

    Shannon Brown|Feb 8, 2024

It didn't feel like winter for the kids that attended the fifth annual Wild Coyote Winter Festival last Saturday. Rain and warm temperatures melted most of the snow. The ice sculpture volcano had melted, but enough snow was still piled for sledding. Manager Karen Fergeson said they normally have the event the third week in January. "There wasn't enough snow for it then. Last year we had a big snowman and ice sculpture." Anita Brown conducted the hot chocolate and hot dog stand outside. "This is...

  • Senior Spotlight - Dave Helterline of Plains

    Shannon Brown|Feb 8, 2024

On August 28, 1930, David Lee Helterline was born the middle child of 10 children in his family. Dave's father was born in Pennsylvania in 1898, and moved to Montana to be a farmer. He and Dave's uncles ran the farm that was diversified, Dave said. "We had cows, wheat, oats, hay and barley." Dave did not want to be a farmer. He had other plans. Sometime after high school graduation in 1948, "I enlisted in the Air Force for four years during the Korean War," Dave recalls. He was an aircraft...

  • Savage-Horsemen third at divisional

    Annie Wooden|Feb 8, 2024

Shelby sits at the crossroads of Interstate 15 and Highway 2 on Montana's hi-line. Western Montana wrestlers came to a different crossroads last weekend as they competed in the divisional tournament in Shelby, fighting for a trip to the state tournament. The Plains-Hot Springs team finished the tournament in third place, garnering 172 points. Florence finished in first place with 239 and Eureka was second with 187.5. The Savage-Horsemen had an incredible nine wrestlers qualify for the state...

  • Hawks triumphant over Plains

    Annie Wooden|Feb 8, 2024

Plains and Thompson Falls put on a great show on the court last Thursday in Thompson Falls as the rivals met for the final time in the regular season. The Blue Hawk girls bested the Trotters 51-25 and the Hawk boys won 46-28. It was an aggressive game for the Hawk boys and Horsemen as Thompson Falls took an early lead and kept it the entire 32 minutes. The Hawks led 11-6 after the first quarter and 25-13 at the half. The lead was enough to lead the Hawks into the home stretch for the win. Aden...

  • Savage Heat go back to back with Two Eagle River

    Annie Wooden|Feb 8, 2024

It was a busy week for the Hot Springs basketball teams last week. The Savage Heat went back-to-back with Two Eagle River Wednesday and Thursday, with the girls getting two wins and the boys two losses. The Lady Savage Heat beat Two Eagle River 59-49 on Wednesday and 50-43 on Thursday, while the boys fell 44-54 on Wednesday and 53-65 on Thursday. The Savage Heat boys bounced back with a win on Saturday, though, beating Alberton 56-37 in Hot Springs. The girls did not play on Saturday as Alberton does not have a team. In their win at home...

  • Lady Hawks get OT win over Eureka

    Annie Wooden|Feb 8, 2024

Saturday night at the Thompson Falls High School gymnasium was a little like Groundhog Day. The Hawks welcomed the Eureka Lions basketball teams, and the night was nearly a repeat of when the Hawks traveled to Eureka just a couple weeks ago. While the Blue Hawk boys fell to the Lions 64-36, the Lady Hawks finished the evening off with a 60-50 overtime win. The Lady Hawks handily led the Lions through the first three quarters, up 15-5 after the first and 31-15 at halftime. As the third quarter...

  • Red Devils fall to Two Eagle River

    Annie Wooden|Feb 8, 2024

The Red Devils hosted Two Eagle River on Friday in Noxon, sending the team home with two wins. The Red Devil boys lost 49-62 and the girls 41-50. The Red Devils kept it close in the first quarter, down just five points as the buzzer sounded. The Eagles soared in the second though, as they scored 19 to Noxon's 2 points and led 34-12 at the half. In the second half, Noxon had more momentum as they worked to lessen the lead. In the fourth quarter Noxon scored 27 points, more than they had the...

  • Whatcha Readin'? Free day for more readin

    Sunday Dutro|Feb 8, 2024

Welcome to a leap year! I recently asked an artist friend what she planned to do with her “free day.” I expected to hear something funny but true like “sleep!” or something inspiring but exhausting like “try a new technique.” Instead, she said, “it’s a Thursday: I’m going to work out and then work.” Wha-wha-wha. How terribly disappointing. Still, she’s not wrong…there’s this meme going around, you’ve probably seen it: “You can’t read all day if you don’t start in the morning.” This is something I haven’t done in years. Possibly because I hav...
