  • Commissioners appoint Burlingame to seat

    Annie Wooden|Feb 10, 2022

Sanders County Commissioners have chosen a third member. Commissioners Glen Magera and Tony Cox met last week to make their selection to fill the seat of Carol Brooker, who resigned at the end of last year. The commissioners chose Claude Burlingame, an attorney from Thompson Falls, to fill the position through 2022. As 2022 is an election year, voters in District 1, which includes portions of Plains and Thompson Falls, will select a new commissioner in November. Whoever is elected in November will then complete the remainder of Brooker’s t...

    Ed Moreth|Feb 10, 2022

It's basically a little training to build little train buildings and the Paradise Center Railroad Club's two newest members are jumping right in to help with the center's railroad display. Plains residents Laura (McClenahan) Wood and Andy Gonzalez recently joined the club to help construct the assortment of model buildings that made up the town of Paradise and the railroad station. "I knew they needed all the help they could get and since I'm on the board I thought I should help," said Wood,...

  • TF wrestler stays focused

    Annie Wooden|Feb 10, 2022

It's a historical wrestling season for Thompson Falls senior Trae Thilmony, but that's not what he's focused on. "This year I've just been wrestling, having fun. I wasn't too nervous," Thilmony said after he won his fourth divisional meet, a record for Thompson Falls High School. "I've just been working to get better." Last week at the divisional tournament, Thilmony became the first wrestler in school history to win the divisional title four times. He's also on track to become the winningest...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Feb 10, 2022

Tuesday in the newsroom it was discovered that I had the wrong edition number on page three of the February 3 newspaper. Last week was the first edition of our 118th volume. That's 118 years of covering Sanders County! I was shocked that I had missed The Ledger's birthday. I love celebrating milestones. If you know me even a little, you could probably guess that I was more than excited to celebrate my dog's fourth birthday last month (best pawty ever). As the years go by, we mark significant events in our lives and in the world with dates and...

  • When power ignores patriotism

    Feb 10, 2022

During the gloom of winter evenings, I’ve been reading A Short History of Byzantium, John Julius Norwich’s 1997 popular summary of his earlier three-volume work intended for professional historians. This is the repetitious and truly discouraging story of the chaotic city/kingdom which for more than a millennium dominated the geographical chokepoint between Europe and Asia. Despite roots in Greek cultures, Byzantium developed no interest in democracy. It was a harsh, absolutist theocracy and determined to stay that way, with power passing back-a...

  • A Few Thoughts

    Sandy Compton|Feb 10, 2022

A bobcat is traveling around the homestead these days, teaching snowshoe hares and ruffed grouse to pay attention, a good and proper thing for a bobcat to do. I see its tracks rambling through my woods. I also had the good luck of a sighting a few weeks ago. In my years in this neck of the woods, I’ve seen three bobcats, and sightings were years apart. One popped out of the woods on a summer day during my teens, scaring the bejeezus out of my first and only horse. Thunder went straight up and sideways, which scared the bejeezus out of me, as w...

4 YEARS AGO • JANUARY 28, 1982 JIMMY CARTER OPENED FIRST COUNTY THEATER More than half a century ago, a group of young pranksters put up a sign on a movie marquee in Thompson Falls reading: “Jim Carter died last night.” Now past 90 years old, the man who first brought motion picture entertainment to Sanders County communities is healthy, active and looking forward to reaching his 100th birthday. Jimmy Carter came to Plains in August 1910 at a time in his life when he admits he was “very interested in girls.” But, it wasn’t long until his i...

  • Wrestlers ready for state competition

    Annie Wooden|Feb 10, 2022

It all comes down to this. Eleven Sanders County wrestlers are making the journey east this week to the Montana All-Class State Wrestling Tournament at MetraPark in Billings. For three of those wrestlers, these will be the final matches of their high school careers. If you've never been to a state wrestling tournament, it should be on your bucket list. The atmosphere is comparable to what I imagine it's like to be at the Olympics. There's a parade of athletes. There are thousands of people...

The Blue Hawk wrestlers took fifth place at the Western B-C Divisional tournament in Butte last weekend, with four wrestlers earning a trip to state. "We had a really good weekend," Coach Mike Thilmony said. "We took seven guys in and four are going to state." Thilmony was proud of his wrestlers who didn't advance to state as well. Levi Wenz went 0-2 at state in the 120-pound bracket, but Thilmony said the Noxon wrestler has room to grow and he expects Wenz to do great things for the program the...
