  • Hawks aim for big finish

    John Hamilton|Feb 11, 2021

Building towards a big finish in the upcoming post season tournaments, Thompson Falls Blue Hawk wrestlers stayed busy last week, grappling in a mixer along with Bigfork and Arlee in Bigfork last Tuesday, and hosting dual matches with Jefferson County and Clark Fork Saturday. Hawk coach Mike Thilmony said no team scores were kept in Bigfork. Hindered by a lack of a full lineup, Thompson Falls lost both duals Saturday with Jefferson County and Clark Fork, but Thilmony was happy with how his...

  • P-HS grapples Eureka Lions

    John Hamilton|Feb 11, 2021

Eureka won the dual but the Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen still gained a lot from the day. Grappling a dual with Eureka in Eureka Friday, the Savage Horsemen lost that dual 39-21 but ended up getting 20 valuable matches for their wrestlers before the event ended. “Overall we had a good dual with Eureka,” P-HS coach Shane Angle said. “We got some good looks for some of our boys on where we stand against some state place winning wrestlers.” For the record, Jacob Schulze pinned Eureka’s Carson Conard in 1:07 at 120 pounds and Bert DeTienne wo...

  • Hawks box in Lions, fall to Loyola Rams

    John Hamilton|Feb 11, 2021

When the smoke finally clears, we will see which Western B boys teams are still left standing. Following a scorched-earth policy on a torrid schedule of late-season games last week, the No. 9 rated Thompson Falls Blue Hawks split games with Western B foes last week, losing a 68-61 decision to Loyola in Missoula Thursday before battling past Eureka 60-47 in a key District 7B contest in Eureka Saturday. Now 6-1 in 7B action and 9-2 overall, coach Jake Mickelson and his Hawks will keep the heat on...

  • Tournaments adjusted for COVID-19 situation

    John Hamilton|Feb 11, 2021

The tournament season will be a little different in 2021. Thanks to the lingering effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, high school sports have been forced to make adjustments, ever since March of last year, when state basketball tournaments across Montana were called off on championship Saturday of the state tourneys. Although that doubled the number of normal state championship teams, it also provided a hint about what post-season basketball may look like in the 2020-2021 school year. In District 7B, the conference tournament has been abandoned al...

  • For the win!

Megan to Jody for two. Not just any two points either, the two Megan Baxter and Jody Detlaff teamed up for at the end of the game were the decisive ones in a clutch 55-53 win for the Lady Hawks over the Lady Lions in Eureka Saturday. Taking over first place in District 7B, coach Chadd Laws and his Lady Hawks improve to 6-1 in conference and 9-2 overall while coach Ryan Holder's Lions fall to 5-1 and 8-5. Entering the fray as the No. 6 rated Class B in Montana, the Hawks avenged an earlier loss...

  • Discombobulated Trotters regroup

    John Hamilton|Feb 11, 2021

From being discombobulated to playing in perfect harmony – well, almost in perfect harmony. Seeming to make great strides since an early-season home loss to these same Lady Red Devils, coach Eddie Fultz and his Plains Trotters defeated the Devils 51-32 in Noxon Saturday. In their other game last week, the Trotters played well through most of the game but lost to Clark Fork 52-43 in Superior Friday. Heading for a District 14C tournament game next Tuesday (see other story), Fultz and the T...

    John Hamilton|Feb 11, 2021

The future of Noxon Red Devil basketball is not on the horizon – it is out there on the floor right now. Going without two starters and utilizing four eighth graders as high school roster players, the Noxon boys lost a pair of District 14C conference games last week, falling 61-24 at St. Regis Friday and 47-33 to Plains in Noxon Saturday. The Devils wrap up regular season play visiting St. Regis Friday and hosting Plains Saturday for senior night in Noxon. The District 14C tournament will begin next Tuesday (see other story). With one s...

  • Savage Heat ladies fall to Charlo Vikings

    John Hamilton|Feb 11, 2021

Struggling through a season with low numbers and his best player now sidelined with a season-ending injury, Hot Springs girls basketball coach Richard Jackson does not have a lot of time on his hands for worrying about such things. After all, he is a rancher as well as a coach and right now is calving season in western Montana. “We have 62 or 63 on the ground right now,” Jackson announced his current calve count Monday night. “So, with basketball going on too, we are pretty busy.” Jackson and his Savage Heat girls are set to play their final re...

    John Hamilton|Feb 11, 2021

The Plains Horsemen improved to 2-6 in District 14C play and 2-7 overall with a 47-33 road win over Noxon Saturday. In other action last week, the Horsemen lost to Clark Fork in Superior Friday but no details were available from that game. With the District 14C tournament now less than a week away, coach Cortney Vohs and her Noxon Lady Red Devils will finish regular season play this week, visiting Clark Fork in Superior Thursday and hosting Hot Springs in Noxon Saturday. The Devils lost a pair of conference games last week, losing to St. Regis in St. Regis Friday and falling 51-32 to Plains in Noxon Saturday. Vohs was impressed with what she saw from the Plains Trotters. “They really played a lot better this time,” she said referring to a Noxon victory in Plains several wee...

Now 4-4 in 14C play and overall, coach Scott Fredrickson and his Heat fell 59-48 to the Charlo Vikings in Charlo Thursday, but will now set their sights on the 2-6, 2-7 Horsemen in Hot Springs Friday, and on 0-8, 0-8 Noxon in Noxon Saturday. • Storm boosts snow levels

    Shana Neesvig|Feb 11, 2021

Punxsutawny Phil seemed credible on Groundhog Day when he claimed we would have six more weeks of winter. Despite USDA Natural Resources and Conservation Service (NRCS) reporting a warm and dry month for January, last weekend February gave Sanders County a much-needed boost in snowpack levels. “Overall, January snowfall was below normal for all areas of the state,” reported Luke Zukiewicz, NRCS water supply specialist, “except the central mountain ranges and southwest river basins. This caused snowpack totals to decline for the second month...

The bridge was constructed in 1957 and is in need of repairs and routine upkeep. Brent Schiller with Forsgren Associates was tasked with performing a field visit to the bridge in 2020. The firm was also tasked with an evaluation on traffic control. It was concluded the bridge, while safe to drive on, is in a sever...

  • Plains council may resort to second eminent domain

    Ed Moreth|Feb 11, 2021

For the second month in a row, the Plains Town Council passed a resolution relating to property it needs for its proposed sewage treatment plant and might have to resort to eminent domain to get it. The five town council members voted unanimously last Monday evening to approve Resolution 21-3, which makes a final offer to the Stonebrook Trust for the acquisition of a stretch of property for the planned sewage plant. As in the case of Resolution No. 21-1, which was approved in January to...
