Paying respect to her love, compassion, and unending support for the children and parents of Thompson Falls and surrounding area, Diane Hedahl has been selected grand marshal for the Thompson Falls Christmas on Main Street parade. "I prefer to fly under the radar," Hedahl modestly said. "But" she induced with laughter, "I guess this year I'll fly with Santa." Although she feels honored for her selection, she feels the real award has been the opportunity for her to "serve the children of our...
Cancer Network of Sanders County (CNSC) held its final fundraiser of the year, the annual lantern launch, last Saturday at the Sanders County Fairgrounds. Under a moonlit sky and accented by the holiday light display at the fairgrounds, 25 volunteers sent more than 60 lanterns into the sky, some with messages written to those who have passed. CNSC President Shelley Bertrand said she was happy with the lantern sales, despite only being able to sell to the public two days. She also was pleased...
Officials with the Sanders County Board of Health says it’s important that residents continue to follow guidelines to help slow the spread of COVID-19. A third Sanders County resident died this week as a result of contracting coronavirus. As of Tuesday, the county had 36 active cases, with 217 people listed as recovered. With the three deaths, that brought the total confirmed cases in Sanders County to 256. While the country awaits distribution of a coronavirus vaccine, John Hamilton with the Board of Health said that residents need to c...
The number of active coronavirus cases keeps creeping up in Sanders County. As of Tuesday, there were 36 active cases. Even with people recovering and going off the active case list, the numbers are going up. The anticipation of a vaccine being distributed to the public is also increasing. While some will choose not to get vaccinated, we suspect that most people will be eager to get the vaccine and protect themselves. The vaccines will likely first be administered to frontline workers and those at higher risk of contracting the virus. It will...
I received really positive feedback after the last column and people expressed an interest in more of the same. I’m going to share two more stories about incidents I’m personally familiar with and wrap it up with an explanation regarding why I’m sharing all of this. One night while on patrol, I heard a high priority radio call broadcast of a “Domestic Violence/ADW (assault with a deadly weapon) suspect. The broadcast went on to provide a physical description of the suspect, who was said to be a...

Per request of the mayor on behalf of the city, I am reminding you that I am speaking only for myself, not for the city, not for the mayor, and not for other council members. In order to keep myself out of potential hot water, and to keep others comfortable with what I am doing, I’m now and in the future writing these pieces solely as a private citizen, who, because of several years' attendance at council meetings previously as a private citizen, understand quite a bit about city administration. I’m a “communicator” and think systems work be...

As we head into winter, I always like to brush up on winterizing the chicken coop, to help my birds get through the colder months a little easier. As I’m reading, I always come across the controversial topic of heating. Do you heat a coop in the winter or not? Much of the conversation falls under the debate of putting a heat lamp inside the coop. Anywhere you look, you will find advocates on both sides of the topic. Many will say, there is no way to safely use a heat lamp inside the coop because of the fire risk. Others say, supplemental h...

Last year, Weyerhaeuser announced the company reached an agreement to sell 630,000 acres of Montana timberland to a Georgia-based land investment firm, Southern Pine Plantations (SPP), for $145 million. The exchange between the two companies raised concerns not only among Montanans, but Sanders County residents, as the land includes acreage around the Thompson Falls Chain of Lakes, Thompson River and near Thompson Falls and Plains. Questions have been raised regarding public access, as the...

The fact that Thompson Falls and Plains will remain rivals in Western Conference 8-Man football for at least two more seasons was the biggest news for Sanders County fans, but there was plenty of other decisions made during the Montana High School Association’s latest regular board meeting. Also hoping to decide how best to move forward during the pandemic of 2020 along with other more usual business, the MHSA executive board met via Zoom conference November 30. One of the biggest topics of conversation during the Zoom meeting was the recent r...
