    John Hamilton|Feb 18, 2021

“It has been a challenging year and people may be overlooking us,” Hot Springs girls basketball coach Richard Jackson said. “But we are still hungry and anything can happen at tournament time.” Heavily impacted by the midseason loss of junior Katelyn Christensen, widely considered to be one of the premier female prep players in any class of western Montana basketball, the Heat completed regular season play with losses to Plains 38-22 in Hot Springs Friday and 52-13 to Noxon in Noxon Saturday. The Savage Heat girls were set to play Noxon again i...

  • Fighting weight

    John Hamilton|Feb 18, 2021

Wrestling great at their best fighting weight. High school wrestling is all about finding your perfect weight for competing, and working to be the best you can be at that particular poundage. Doing their best to perfect their bodies and techniques as the season rapidly winds down, Thompson Falls wrestlers stayed busy again last week, winning 32-6 over Mission-Charlo in Mission last Tuesday, defeating Fairfield (30-24) and losing to Whitehall (54-14) in Whitehall Friday and finishing up the week...

Clinching the No. 3 seed into this week's 14C tourney, the Devils will host No. 6 Hot Springs in the first round (see other story for more on the district tourney). "That was a huge win for us and I think it shows that we are starting to come together better as a team," coach Cortney Vohs said. "We are looking forward to the tournament and seeing how we can do there."...

  • Trotters aim for second season

    John Hamilton|Feb 18, 2021

It’s the second season; a time to begin again. Hoping to parlay an up-and-down regular season into tournament success, Plains Trotters coach Eddie Fultz was upbeat early this week. “Whatever kind of season you have had, tournaments represent a new beginning, another chance to do your best,” he said. “It could take a great effort over the course of several games in a short time, but we still have a chance to be one of the top two teams and move on.” As detailed in the 14C tournament story, the No. 4 Trotters were to have hosted No. 5 St. Regis...

  • Hawk JV play varsity

    John Hamilton|Feb 18, 2021

Not your average junior varsity basketball team, the Thompson Falls Lady Hawk JV are actually just as good, or better than some of the varsity teams in the area. Proving this fact of basketball life, coach Michael Benson’s very good Lady Hawk JV defeated the Valley Christian varsity 56-36 in Thompson Falls last Tuesday. Chesney Lowe led the Lady Hawks to the win with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, Dannijo VanHuss scored 13, Julissa Bonney six, Roni Hanks five, Abbi Lane and Kenzie Robins three each, and Hattie Neesvig and Cheyla I...

  • Horsemen head to 14C tourney

    John Hamilton|Feb 18, 2021

What better time than now to get over that proverbial hump? Coach Tyrel Allen and his Plains Horsemen dropped a pair of games last week, falling 72-32 to St. Regis in Plains Thursday before having a shot at tying up the game late before losing 40-37 in Hot Springs Friday. The No. 5 seed in the remote District 14C tournament being played this week, the Horsemen were set to play at No. 4 Charlo Tuesday in the first round of the tourney but results were not available at press time. Allen says his Horsemen have been playing a lot of teams close...

Still the No. 3 seed in spite of the loss to the Red Devils, coach Scott Fredrickson and his Savage Heat were set to play No. 6 Noxon again in Hot Springs Tuesday in the first round of the District 14C tournament, but results of that game were not available at press time. • Red Devils repel Hot Springs

    John Hamilton|Feb 18, 2021

Maybe they can pull it off again, this time on the other team’s court. Coach Ben Johnson and his previously winless Noxon Red Devil boys put one in the win column in Noxon’s final home game of the year, edging past Sanders County rival Hot Springs 38-37 in Noxon Saturday. Hoping they can pull of the feat again on Hot Springs’ court, the Devils, as the No. 6 seed, were playing at No. 3 Hot Springs Tuesday, but results of that game were not available at press time. The Noxon boys also lost to Clark Fork in Superior Thursday but details on that...
