  • HOLIDAY SPIRIT

    John Dowd|Dec 10, 2020

It was beginning to look like Christmas in Thompson Falls last week as the annual Christmas on Main Street events inspired holiday spirit throughout town. The Thompson Falls Chamber of Commerce hosted a Holiday Stroll on Thursday evening. Businesses stayed open as families strolled Main Street. Three craft stations were set up as nonprofit organizations and businesses had kids create ornaments for the community Christmas tree, which was lit at the end of the evening. Christmas on Main Street...

  • VFW retires flags during ceremony

    John Dowd|Dec 10, 2020

In 1942 the first American code for flag etiquette was nationalized, however, prior to flag day several years earlier, in 1923, there were no guidelines of any kind generally recognized by the states or the federal government. After some time, the country decided there needed to be officially recognized regulation in the way the flag was handled and respected. The country has come a long way in how it treats the flag, and in Plains the respect holds strong. Every year on December 7, Pearl...

  • Rail Authority asks county for support

    Miriah Kardelis|Dec 10, 2020

The Sanders County Commissioners held a public meeting last Thursday to discuss a proposed contribution from Sanders County to the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority. Earlier this month it was announced that 12 Montana counties, including Sanders County, have officially founded the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority to advocate for the return of passenger rail service across southern Montana. Jerry McDonald, an appointee to Big Sky Passenger Rail, approached the commissioners at the public meeting and asked for a commitment on the county’s end f...

  • Sweet creations adorn contest

    Dec 10, 2020

Beautiful homes, trains, ornate churches, a toy shop and Christmas gifts all made of one of America's favorite holiday treat - gingerbread! The Christmas season simply wouldn't be complete without the annual display and competition. Decorated with gum drops, chocolate bars, red licorice and lots of fondant, the creations were on display at the Old Jail Museum's 23rd Annual Gingerbread Event. The creations are no easy feat. Some bakers have been working on their entries for months, and the...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Dec 10, 2020

This holiday season, similar to this whole year, looks a little different. We gathered at safe distances last week for Christmas on Main Street festivities in Thompson Falls. Now begins the final preparations for Christmas. The large gatherings and parties won't be happening, and probably few people will be traveling to visit their loved ones. Things will just be different. What hasn't changed is the need to help others in our community. This week, we have published the Guide to Local Giving on page 7. Thank you to First Security Bank for...

  • Montana Viewpoint

    Jim Elliott|Dec 10, 2020

Political courage on the Republican side of the political spectrum seems to be blooming in state legislatures and the offices of state and local election officials, but it is scarce in Congress. It’s hard to tell the big boss he is wrong and harder still if it’s a message so unwelcome that he won’t and can’t hear it. But in Georgia’s 2020 election, which Biden won, the Republican Secretary of State and his elections staff have been unwavering in defending the running and the results of the elect...

  • Hedahl a great choice

    Dec 10, 2020

What a wonderful choice to lead the parade! If you'd asked me for a nomination, I'd have been hard pressed to come up with anyone, but as soon as I read Diane Hedahl, I thought “how perfect”. She's been part of so many things worthy of recognition over the years, but for me, the most relevant in today's stress-filled world is her genuine kindness to everyone she encounters. Thank you to the selection committee. And thank you Diane. Pat Crowder, Thompson Falls...

  • Headline was misleading

    Dec 10, 2020

I want to thank Mariah Kardelis for the well-written article on the sale of lands historically owned by Anaconda Company, Champion International, Weyerhaeuser and Southern Pine Plantations, to the Green Diamond Resource Company. (Sanders County Ledger, December 3, 2020) However, I must tell you that the headline is misleading and could lead to misconceptions concerning land management policies. Those companies are all large, corporate PRIVATE companies several of which have become real estate and land development agencies. Land they own can be...

  • Remember When

    Sherry Hagerman-Benton|Dec 10, 2020
    1

7 YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 29, 1950 OUR PROBLEMS ARE MANY We heard a number of local citizens gripe because an N.P. freight blocked all three crossings in the town for at least half an hour Tuesday morning, just at the time when those employed should have been getting to work. We understand the sheriff was called and asked if he would have the engineer move the train on at least so that one crossing could be used. At times like this, especially in the wintertime, one realizes how handy an underpass...

  • Defendant pleads not guilty

Judge James Manley set Haslage’s trial date for April 26, 2021. According to charging documents, Haslage was arrested in June 2020 after a high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle. Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) was alerted to an orange 1970 Dodge Charger that was stolen from Mullan, Idaho. An MHP trooper spotted the vehicle on I-90 and a pursuit ensued through Mineral and Sanders C...

  • School works to stay open

    Annie Wooden|Dec 10, 2020

Consistency and working to stay open during the pandemic were the goals discussed by the Thompson Falls School Board at Monday’s meeting. Superintendent Bud Scully detailed improvements at the school buildings using COVID-19 funding, including technology upgrades and additional cleaning measures. Elementary Principal Len Dorscher said music teacher Lisa Mickelson is using that new technology to deliver a virtual or recorded Christmas concert. Scully noted that the school also received a donation from Blackfoot for new security cameras. As w...

  • Noxon/Bull River Weather

    Dave Coupal|Dec 10, 2020

Unlike October, November was close to average, both in temperatures and precipitation. Very different from the record November of 1985, when the temperature dropped to a record 10 below zero and 17 days when the temperature never got above freezing and November of 1996 when we got 58" of snow, the beginning of a winter that brought a record 247 inches (20 feet) of snow. Total moisture for this water-year (since October 1, 2020) is 8.95" compared to 7.63" average (17% above average). For snowfall, we have 19.2" compared to 13.2" average (45%...

  • IN MEMORY OF TOBY

    Annie Wooden|Dec 10, 2020

Trevis Bachmann was in Thompson Falls visiting his parents, Kent and Carlene, this month. It was the first time he had seen them in five years. But his trip had an important purpose. It was also the first time Trevis had been back to Montana to visit the grave of his brother Toby, who passed away in 2009 from a massive seizure. Since his brother's death, Trevis has been completing important tasks on Toby's bucket list. "Toby was my biggest fan," Trevis said of his brother, who would drive from...

    Miriah Kardelis|Dec 10, 2020

The Montana Department of Commerce has announced that starting December 8 the Montana Main Street Program grant cycle will be open and accepting applications. “Montana’s Main Streets are vital to the strength and resiliency of our local economies,” Jennifer Olson, Montana Department of Commerce Community Development Division Administrator said in a December 2 press release. “These grants will help Montana communities restore healthy community districts and preserve the historic structures that made Montana the special place we all know and tre...

  • Add cheer to your mailed gifts

    Miriah Kardelis|Dec 10, 2020

Getting your gifts in the mail in time for the holidays is an accomplishment in itself; but the majority of us will be mailing all of our gifts this year instead of being able to deliver them in person. It’s no secret we are all in need of a little extra holiday cheer this upcoming holiday season. Adding small, sentimental touches to your mailed gifts, is an easy way to make the holidays feel just a little bit more special, especially if you can’t be there to celebrate with your loved ones. Adding in small, unexpected treats is definitely wor...

  • CFVH discusses COVID-19 with sports in mind

    John Hamilton|Dec 10, 2020

Sports during the COVID-19 pandemic have proven challenging at all levels. What happens in Montana this winter, as all major sports turn to the indoors, could be interesting to watch – or it could all come to a screeching halt, like it did last winter, on championship night for all the Montana prep basketball tournaments. In an effort to hopefully avoid any prolonged shutdowns and enable Sanders County schools to move forward with and complete the winter sports seasons, as the fall seasons w...
