  • Montana ID cards being replaced

    Shana Neesvig|Feb 21, 2019

If you go in to renew your driver's license, you might be in for a surprise. Montana is in the process of becoming compliant with the Federal REAL ID Act, meaning that a decision will have to be made on whether a regular license or REAL ID will best suit your needs. Residents who will not be entering federal facilities, nuclear power plants or boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft will not need a REAL ID and a regular driver's license will be suitable. Starting October 1, 2020, a...

  • Reaching to help other families

    Shana Neesvig|Feb 21, 2019

The face of the "traditional" college student is changing. When we think of college, we envision an 18-year old dependent, fresh out of high school, who is moving away from their parent's house for the very first time. Times are changing and an increasing amount of college students are not fitting into this mold. Many "non-traditional" students, such as Thompson Falls' Colleen Knutson, realize after a few years that working various "little jobs" will not bring life-long satisfaction. Knutson...

  • Money for Nothing

    Jim Elliott|Feb 21, 2019

There is no other nation whose citizens are better equipped to make moral judgments about total strangers than Americans. After all, a good part of the first Europeans here were the Puritans whose religion was based on what one skeptic said was “the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.” So, when it comes to our government helping the poor, we are the experts on who should not be helped. We might categorize them as “those unwilling to work,” or deadbeats, or losers, or whateve...

  • Weigh options on sewer project

    Feb 21, 2019

The information that we have been seeing on the sewer project is either for or against. I wanted to see some objective research. Does the sewer or the septic systems affect the value of your property, the availability of financing, appraisal, insuring, and selling of the property? I spoke with two appraisers, three realtors, two insurance agencies, the State Assessor’s Office, and our largest bank. The general consensus was that as long as the septic system was not in failure, it would not affect financing, appraisals, sales, property tax, nor...

  • EDITORIAL: Keep your pets warm in winter weather

    Feb 21, 2019

We have to admit, when we see someone carrying around a little dog in a fancy purse or walking their pup in a sweater or special outfit, we giggle at the silliness. Putting our farm dog in a sweater sounds like a ridiculous — and impossible — task. Spoiling our pets with fancy sweaters and designer travel cases isn't a priority, but we do make sure our pets have a warm spot on these cold winter days and nights. Often in winter, we see dogs roaming along the highway or through our towns, and we'd like to take this time to remind you to keep you...

PABLO – Call it the power of positivity. The upbeat Plains Trotters, after a season of rediscovering how fun basketball can actually be, accorded themselves quite well in the District 14C tournament in Pablo last week, winning three games and taking eventual conference champion Charlo virtually to the limit before dropping a tough 37-33 decision in the semifinals Friday. After battling back to earn a date with St. Regis in the consolation final Saturday, the Trotters dismantled St. Regis in t...

Fresh off a confidence-building loss, the Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys will open the Western B divisional tournament against Deer Lodge at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Ronan Event Center. Coach Jake Mickelson and his Hawks will be hoping to use Saturday’s final home game with Bigfork, a game the Hawks were not truly out of until the Vikings went on a 23-11 run in the fourth quarter to end a 60-38 victory, as impetus for this week’s Western B. “We gained some confidence against Bigfork,” Mickelson said. “We will still have to scratch and claw for...
