It's been confirmed and a contract has been signed - the Sanders County Fair will have a carnival. Manager Kristy Sheehan found an interested carnival last month, but it wasn't until recently that the county attorney approved an official contract signed by Sheehan and the owner of Midway West Amusement, which is based in Arizona. Sheehan said they'll be bringing 18-20 rides, including around 10 rides for younger kids, along with several games and a few food booths. The contract calls for Midway...

A discussion on energy changes and challenges was conducted at the Paradise Center last Sunday. The three guest speakers gave presentations, and answered questions, to a packed house. Several topics on current energy sources and future plans were explained at the nonpartisan forum, which was sponsored by the Sanders County Democrats. Dr. Steve Running from the University of Montana has focused his career on creating ways to better understand the impacts of climate change and current energy...
The Hot Springs coffee shop previously known as Coffee Hound has been reopened as Bru Coffee by owner Lori Tapani. Tapani recently moved back to Montana from Washington. Bru Coffee opened its door on February 5 in the Wall Street Building at 101 Wall Street. "I grew up in Hot Springs but was living in Battleground, Washington. Years ago I almost opened a coffee shop there, but just before signing a lease, I found out I was pregnant." Tapani said she opted to not take on a business at that time....
One day last week, I got home to let my dog outside in the afternoon and in the field behind our house, a massive golden eagle was demolishing a turkey. I was taken aback because I didn’t understand what was happening at first and couldn’t tell what was out there. The predator was massive against the small “town turkey” and I was shocked at what I was seeing. It caused quite a ruckus among the flock of 50 or so turkeys that was congregating in groups in the field. When the large eagle took off, it looked like a creature from a fantasy movie a...
The woman everyone called Nana was my stepdad’s mom, with white perfectly coiffed hair, makeup always in place, and ironed slacks with blouse and cardigan ensemble. She was hardly the sort of woman you’d think would inspire anything beyond a fleeting feeling that fun needs to be left outside. But her formal Catholic looks were at odds with her quiet sense of adventure, her ready smile and laugh, and her deep and far-reaching kindness. Nana was always up for a good time, whether a play, travel, or a beer tasting. We’d all become so sick of heari...
5 YEARS AGO • FEBRUARY 7, 1974 GRADER OPERATOR UNHURT AFTER FIVE ROLLS DOWNHILL Harold (Dutch) Lentz rode a road grader down a mountainside as it rolled over five times Monday morning before daylight and he walked away with only a few scratches and bruises. His black dog survived the trip with him. Ben G. Cox, for whom Lentz works, said Lentz was backing his grader near a curve where a truck was parked when it went off the road and took the wild, tumbling ride down the mountain. The site was in Everson Gulch, near where James (Bronc) M...

From birth Mykel could light up any room with her presence and continued to do just that until her passing. Even at the tender age of 2, when she was diagnosed with "ALL" Acute Lymphatic Leukemia, Mykel always had a smile on her face and a caring gesture for all around her. After...
How is it that with so many people on earth, no two are identical? Neither in looks nor in identity. Similar, but not identical. We humans are unique but also dissimilar. We are plagued with questions that don't have clear answers. Some are even difficult or impossible to form into fathomable or meaningful questions. Among these are questions about death. What really happens to us and how do we really want to be remembered? Is it moral and meaningful to be arrogantly shrouded in extravagance...

Lillian Laws was born December 17, 1924, in Bigfork, Minnesota. "My dad was Harry Henry Gravelle. My mom was a LaBlanc. Both of their families were from France, then migrated to Quebec. My mom never learned to speak English," Laws said. Her grandfather was a Native American agent for the Cree Nation. Lillian's family moved to North Dakota to farm. The locusts came and destroyed everything, she recalls. "We went to my mom's brother's home in Sandpoint, Idaho. My uncle Arthur was a dray line deliv...
Construction loans can be a great way to help you achieve the goal of building your dream home. Construction loans are typically a 12-month line of credit. Funds are disbursed from this line to pay the contractor to build your home. During this construction period, you are only required to pay the monthly interest, which is based on the principal amount of the loan. Once the construction of the home is completed, the construction loan will either be converted to a traditional mortgage loan, or it will need to be refinanced into a mortgage...
It was a successful District 7B tournament in St. Ignatius last weekend as all four Sanders County teams earned a trip to the divisional tournament Feb. 22-24 in Pablo. Thompson Falls boys and girls each placed second in their respective bracket, with the Plains boys finishing third and the girls finishing fourth. The Horsemen opened the District tournament last Tuesday with a play-in game against Troy which they won 59-45. In St. Ignatius, the Blue Hawks and Horsemen met in the first round...
The Hot Springs Lady Savage Heat brought the hardware home last weekend, taking second at the 14-C District tournament in Polson, securing themselves a spot at divisionals. The Savage Heat boys finished third in the district, but fell in a playoff game with Drummond on Monday. While the Noxon Red Devils fought a valiant fight, both the boys and girls teams finished their seasons at District. It was the Noxon Lady Red Devils who opened the tournament Thursday facing off against the Lady Eagles of...
The Plains Horsemen cleared the first hurdle in the postseason with a 59-45 win over the Troy Trojans last week at Plains. Troy collected nine points in the last four minutes of the game, partly because one of the Horsemen's top players had fouled out, but that didn't stop Plains from also hitting their mark for nine points in the last few minutes of the game. Anaya Loberg chalked up 15 points in the game before fouling out in the fourth. "Anaya plays with a lot of passion and when it is...

It was a big day for little guys in big battles. Nearly 285 wrestlers gathered on the mats for the Superior Invitational and the first Little Guy Wrestling meet of the season, but those little guys included little gals, too - almost 50 of them from seven teams of Sanders, Mineral, Lake, and Missoula counties. Superior and Frenchtown each had more than 60 grapplers, but Plains had the largest team of Sanders County with 45 boys and 10 girls. Hot Springs had the smallest number of wrestlers with...
by Annie Wooden The town of Noxon suffered a devastating loss on Tuesday when a fire destroyed several businesses. Fire crews responded to an early-morning fire Tuesday in the 700 block of Noxon Avenue that destroyed several buildings. The fire, which officials said Tuesday appears to have started at the Angry Beaver General Store, also destroyed Toby's Tavern and the Noxon Mercantile and Cafe. Along with the Noxon Fire Department, Heron Fire, and Trout Creek Rural Fire responded to the blaze,...
