The community of Thompson Falls embraced the holiday spirit of the weekend with a variety of events for families to enjoy. On Friday, the Thompson Falls Main Street committee sponsored the holiday stroll, which featured carolers and treats at several Main Street businesses. That culminated with the Sanders County Chamber's annual tree lighting ceremony across the street from the courthouse. Rob Viens led community members in carols before Chamber President Dennis Spurlock addressed the crowd...
The Noxon community showed up Tuesday to hear what's being done about the bridge leading into their town and find out what they can do to help the effort. Tuesday's meeting brought more than 60 people to the Noxon fire hall to hear from local officials, as well as engineers working with the county to find solutions for the deteriorating 102-year-old bridge. In July, the bridge was closed for a week after a routine inspection by the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) found two cracks in t...
They were tattered, torn, frayed, and discolored and their service to the country had passed - the end of life for a national symbol - the American flag. A dozen military veterans gathered behind Horse Plains VFW Post 3596 on Saturday evening to bid farewell to a comrade they had served on active duty. It was a quiet and solemn ceremony that took less than 15 minutes. One by one, the veterans put an unserviceable flag into a barrel of flames. The barrels eventually got so hot, the vets had to...
High school art students exited the classroom last week and spent the day at different Plains businesses to bring more Christmas spirit to the community. "I think it's so wonderful that the school does this," said Emily Sexton, owner of Em's Cafe in Plains. It was her first time to participate in the school's holiday window painting project. Sexton asked if they could incorporate a moose in their artwork of several windows of the cafe. "I love mooses and we have them here everywhere," said Sexto...
The last Plains Town Council meeting of the year was short, but finished with a surprise request from a resident. Plains resident and business owner Matthew Jaramillo accused Chief of Police Brian Josephson of misusing his authority and engaging in personal vendettas. "I come to you today to raise urgent concerns regarding Chief Brian Josephson's continued service as police chief for the Town of Plains," Jaramillo said at last Monday night's council meeting at City Hall. Mayor Joel Banham gave h...

I'm probably getting a lump of coal in my stocking or a glitter bomb on my car for saying this, but I haven't put up one Christmas decoration this year. I'm doing some holiday-ish things here and there by putting together an Advent devotional book for church and a couple of garlands up at The Ledger. However, the holidays seem to be sneaking up on me and there's still so much to get done. My next-door neighbors have a fantastic larger than life reindeer in their front yard with a light shining on it at night. Going to work in the early morning...

Dear Editor, After reading the response to my letter by Mr. Thompson, I feel compelled to respond myself. First off, I would like to thank all Mr. Thompson’s relatives, my relatives and all other veterans for their service to our country. In addressing your perception of me being negative in my letter, I think it is ironic because all I did was state facts that are a matter of record about the president-elect. Talking about negative, from the president-elect’s supporters, for the last four years (eight really) all I’ve seen is slogans like...
I’ve lately confessed to enjoying the writings of Loren Eiseley. If you haven’t gotten one of his books and started reading (have a dictionary handy), I may not be doing my job. My job — sometimes — is to encourage my audience, small as it might be, to think for themselves, as opposed to letting someone else think for them. It might be more work, but it’s a critical component of personal freedom. Eiseley thought for himself. Something I like about Eiseley is that he doesn’t tell his readers how it is; he tells how he sees it. He knew that not e...
