In the year 2001, the National Science Foundation devised the acronym SMET (science, mathematics, engineering and technology) in efforts to draw attention to the newly recognized climactic need for future scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Soon after, the acronym was changed to STEM, a common term now used to address the movement developing skills needed to solve common everyday, as well as larger-scaled future challenges of the 21st century; the first century of the third millennium....

Wood appeared in 20th District Judicial Court before Judge Deborah "Kim" Christopher, who imposed the sentence. Wood was found guilty in January of deliberate homicide in the death of Matthew LaFriniere. Three witnesses testified at the sentencing hearing on Tuesday, including George LaFriniere, Matt's father. More details will be available in...
The Montana Supreme Court last week made a decision to uphold a permit for Hecla’s proposed Rock Creek mine issued by the state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). The DNRC issued the water right permit in January 2018 that covers Hecla’s ability to use water for operations at the proposed silver and copper mine. The Supreme Court voted 5-2 last week to overturn a 2019 judgment in First Judicial District Court. “We’re pleased with the Supreme Court’s ruling in supporting the state DNRC’s issuance of the water right permi...
With the deadline to file for special district elections passed, Sanders County school board candidates still have a month to file their intent for open positions. Bobbi Christenson with the Sanders County Elections Office stated that write-in candidates have until March 1 to file for open special district positions. If there are no write-in candidates, all of the elections for 2021 can be canceled, as all positions are currently unopposed. Local fire districts will elect trustees this year. John Morigeau was the only candidate to file for the...
The Paradise group opposed to putting in a sewer system there hasn’t given up — they’ve put together a petition to recall two of the board members, but in hopes of eventually stopping the entire project, according to LeeAnn Overman, one of those who’s has been in opposition to the proposed sewer system since the start. Paradise resident Cody Lampman filed the “Notice of Intent To Recall” paperwork last week at the Sanders County Courthouse in an effort to start a petition to remove Sunny Chase, president of the Sanders County Sewer District at...

We've been watching the broadcast and reading the news of the devastation happening in the South due to winter storms. States such as Texas were battered with winter weather, frigid temperatures and several inches of snow. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex got between four and seven inches of snow. Powerlines were down and people were stranded without a heat source. Dozens of people have died in the winter storm, some of hypothermia because they weren't prepared. In Montana, we don't even cancel school for four inches of snow. We're prepared for...
I like to listen to music when I exercise. The right beat can motivate me and take my mind off the pain I'm inflicting on my tired old body! A few weeks ago, my granddaughter and her best friend were visiting and I very briefly heard a song they were playing. It had the type of beat I like to exercise to, so I asked the name of the tune (Colt 45) and downloaded it. The next day I played the song and was completely disgusted when I actually paid attention to the lyrics. I deleted the song immedia...
Editor, As a retired high school registrar and former junior high principal’s secretary and office manager, I write to express my deep concern over the recent lifting of the state mask mandate, the lowering of the vaccine priority for our teachers from 1B to 1C and what appears to be stubbornness and/or indifference on the part of the school district administration regarding the danger posed by COVID-19 to our teachers, building support staff, students and by extension, all our families. I believe I heard the CDC will raise the vaccine p...

In January, 1910, the paper was sold to E.H. Rathbone, who ran the plant about a...

Fauve Fergusom of Hot Springs appeared in 20th District Judicial Court on Tuesday to change her plea to guilty to charges of felony endangerment of the welfare of children. She admitted to having used methamphetamines in the home she shared with a child. She will be kept in the Sanders County Jail until her next hearing, on April 13, when she will appear for sentencing....
I would not classify myself as a very experienced skier. However, I am beginning to learn my way around the slopes. Even knowing this, it has been wonderful and humbling to introduce my girlfriend to the sport. I had forgotten how much more often one spends in or on the snow when starting versus floating over top of it, as a skier should. Skiing is widely considered a challenging sport. Unlike baseball, football or any other sport centered around the movement of a projectile, not just anyone can put on skis and hope to get to the bottom of the...
The Sanders County Community Housing Organization (SCCHO) has been working to provide affordable housing options to residents in the area for around 10 years, and recently received a donation of land in Noxon. The group has been working for about five years to procure the land, located across from the post office in Noxon. The property encompasses 12 lots and just under two acres. The project still has a long way to go, according to SCCHO Executive Director Lisa Fried de Reyes. "We are very...
Many community members are aware of the average activities of the 4-H program, where youth learn about trades and farm animals. However, few know about the 4-H Outdoor Adventures Project, which gives young people opportunities to get outdoors. One such outing was hosted by John Haun, Bob Thornhill and Juli Thurston on Eddy Flats Sunday. With a cold snap finally bringing in some cold weather, the trio organized a couple of ice fishing trips, one of which was the one this last weekend. The other w...
Finally, with all the dual matches done and in the books, it's time for some good old-fashioned tournament wrestling. The new and improved Western B-C divisional tournament, which now includes 25 teams, mostly from the former Western and Northern B-C divisions, will be held in Cut Bank Friday and Saturday. The top eight finishers from each weight class then move on to the State B-C meet in Shelby March 5-6. Local squads, like the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks are eager to place as many wrestlers as...
When the Hawks open up their shooting clinic, there is no cure – chances are you are going to lose if going up against them. Opening up a can of clinical-like shooting from all points on the floor the Thompson Falls boys surged past the visiting Florence Falcons 80-71 in an entertaining non-conference game at TFHS Saturday. Finishing regular season action with a 12-3 record, coach Jake Mickelson and his Hawks will now cool their heels until playing Missoula Loyola in the first round of the c...

Still riding high after the first Montana Girls All-State wrestling tournament, where two Plains-Hot Springs wrestlers won medals and two others also had the opportunity to compete, the Savage Horsemen grapplers will try to live up to what their girls accomplished in the next few weeks. The Montana boys prep wrestling season sees the beginning of the end this weekend as teams gather for the first tournaments of the 2020-2021 school year. In Class B-C, that means that the 25 teams of the Western...
It could have been better and it could have been worse but, in the end, the Trotters played their hardest and that’s all that coach Eddie Fultz was asking for all along. Going 2-2 in the remotely played District 14C tournament, the Plains Trotters completed season play with a 7-8 record last week. Starting with a 44-43 win over St. Regis in Plains Tuesday, the Trotters then lost to eventual conference tourney champs Charlo 53-25 in Charlo Thursday before coming back to stay alive with a 51-23 win over Hot Springs in Plains Friday. The T...
Fear the mighty Lady Hawks. The No. 5 ranked Thompson Falls Lady Hawks flew past the Florence Falcons 55-30 in Thompson Falls Saturday to complete regular season play. Now 13-2 and the No. 2 seed from District 7B into the Western B divisional tournament in Eureka March 3-5, the Hawks will practice this week, preparing for Florence (the No. 3 from 6B) again in the first round of that tourney March 3. And although they just defeated the Falcons soundly, Hawk coach Chadd Laws will be taking...

Versus Charlo, Hill canned a t...
