    Shana Neesvig|Mar 29, 2018

The State of Montana has put a halt on any further Hecla mining operations claiming they are not in compliance with environmental laws. In return, Hecla has filed a lawsuit against the State claiming they have no legal grounds. Originally, Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) awarded Hecla permits allowing them to move forward with their mining claims in western Montana. According to Jenifer Garcin, Public Information Specialist for DEQ, “Hecla permitees met the requirements of the Metal Mine Reclamation Act and MEPA/NEPA, t...

    Shana Neesvig|Mar 29, 2018

Pat’s Knob, southwest of Plains, decided to put a snafu in local residents receiving Missoula network television signals last week. According to Western Sanders County TV District, a pair of antennas were damaged during inclement weather. Two trips were made by a two-person maintenance team, via snowmobile, to repair one “bent out of shape” antenna that receives the signal from Blacktail Mountain, south of Kalispell. In addition, a second “transmitter antenna aimed towards the Weeksville tower was completely destroyed,” the District reported....

  • 'A Personal Journey'

    Ed Moreth|Mar 29, 2018

Despite his post-traumatic stress disorder and a fear of public speaking, Plains resident Ed Foste knew his message to help veterans was important enough to get up and talk along the greenway in Plains Monday afternoon. Foste is part of Joint Operation Mariposa, a nonprofit organization created to bring awareness to veteran suicides and the families that are impacted. Foste spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy before retiring in 2002 – much of that time on the flight deck of aircraft carriers – and...

  • Fair demolition derby on track

    Ed Moreth|Mar 29, 2018

The Sanders County Fair demolition derby will continue, but the board is still unsure whether or not the Plains Lions Club will be in the arena to help, according to Sanders County Commissioner Carol Brooker. Fair Manager Chris McGuigan notified the Lions members in attendance at last week’s March fair board meeting that the club would have to purchase spectator insurance and sign waivers to be in the arena during the derby. “We would not be able to do that simply because we would not come out with very much,” said Lions President Duane Highc...

  • Our Viewpoint: Roosevelt made an impact on area

    Mar 29, 2018

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark came through our area more than 200 years ago on the Corps of Discovery Expedition. They became famous for their exploration out west. A lot has changed here in two centuries, but their names are still prominent, from counties to rivers and monuments. Though Lewis and Clark are an important part of our history, other famous Americans made an impact in the area as well. Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was one of those. Roosevelt came to Thompson Falls to hunt the “great white g...

  • Beyond the gun, I saw the future

    Mar 29, 2018

Last Wednesday I had an amazing experience to be allowed to attend the “1700” minute Thompson Falls High School response to the National Day to Walk Out. I want to offer acknowledgment and deep appreciation for this day-long activity. From the point of inspiration of the idea, to all those that contributed to and participated in this remarkable day, thank you!!!!! We as a community are fortunate to have all of you. I experienced such respect, attentiveness and engagement from all but three students (that chose not to attend). The connections de...

Editor, I just want to say how happy I am that I live in the area of Thompson Falls. I live on the Thompson River, and I’m thankful for the crews who are always out there to remove snow. Finally, I want to thank our community – the schools, churches, city workers and emergency service personnel always on call to help. Life is good, but it’s even better here in Sanders County. • Other Viewpoints: Delegation stepped up for Montana

    Mar 29, 2018

With dysfunction in Washington DC near an all-time high, it’s nice to see the Montana delegation help lead the way to a badly needed deal to help our federal forests. Last week, in spite of a four-inch “blizzard” in our nation’s Capitol, a deal was reached that will truly help Montana avoid another smoke-filled summer, and hopefully start bringing the health of our forests back from the brink. Working with colleagues from around the country, Sen. Jon Tester, Sen. Steve Daines, and Rep. Greg Gianforte helped broker a compromise which provide...

After ending a 20-year contract with the national restaurant franchise Subway, the Moshers decided it was time to give a voice to the local customers, who they feel should decide what menu items will be served while having more control over enhancing the local economy. "We will now be able to control our own menu,"...

The Lady Hawk softball team dove into the season head first, playing host to the defending B-C state champion Florence Falcons on Saturday. The Hawks suffered a tough loss 16-0 in five innings, but that's not deterring first-year coach Jared Koskela. That's the elite competition, and now the team knows where they need to be." Koskela said now...
