  • Montana delegation discusses priorities

    Annie Wooden|Mar 30, 2023

Montana's congressional delegation is busy with the current session in Washington, D.C., and both senators and representatives agree there is work to be done. Sen. Jon Tester recently announced he is running for re-election in 2024. "I want to work on making sure the country is less divided," Tester said last week from his office in D.C. He added that he wants to be able to give the younger generation the same opportunities his parents gave to him. "So far so good," Sen. Tester said of the 2023...

  • County employees get safety training

    Annie Wooden|Mar 30, 2023

Sanders County employees got first-hand experience with fire extinguishers last week, but there was no emergency. The safety training was something Human Resources Director Rich Wallace said the county is doing quarterly, to give employees hands-on experience. In 2022, the county coordinated with Montana State Fund to offer defensive driving training, and last month completed an armed intruder training. County employees completed fire extinguisher training four years ago, and Wallace felt it was...

    Ed Moreth|Mar 30, 2023

The Paradise Center started its spring art classes last week with new ones and an old favorite and with more to come. The carving class finished last Wednesday, but the photography and glass fusing classes are four-part series and continue into the month of April. This was the first time for Tom Collins of Plains to give a wood carving class at the Paradise Center with three women and one man forming a head from basswood, a relatively soft wood common with carvers. "I carved a bar of soap when...

  • Encouraging the next generation of leaders

    Annie Wooden|Mar 30, 2023

At the forum discussing Montana’s state constitution earlier this month, there was a diverse group of more than 100 people. There were politicians and retired people and realtors and volunteers. There were people who had lived in Sanders County forever and some newer residents. There were women and men. There were Republicans and Democrats. What we didn’t see was much diversity in age. I am 43 and I was the youngest person in the room except for a young family who showed up later in the presentation. It bothered me that there weren’t more...

  • Montana Viewpoint: Institutions and constitutions

    Jim Elliott|Mar 30, 2023

You will hear people say that we need to protect our “institutions” in America. What on earth does that mean? In a nutshell, an institution is words, an idea, not anything you can touch or feel, except with the mind and heart. It is like the cement that holds the bricks of a building together. The Montana Constitution is just such an institution, and it is under stress at the moment. I recently listened to former governor Marc Racicot talk about a constitution as a social contract describing how...

  • Destroy or restore constitution

    Mar 30, 2023

Dear Editor, In response to Mr. Rude’s letter; “Hands off the constitution,” I would like to speak specifically to the U.S. Constitution. George Washington said, “The constitution … approaches nearer to perfection than any government hitherto instituted among men.” The adoption of the Constitution, “will demonstrate as visibly the finger of Providence as any possible event in the course of human affairs can ever designate it.” Benjamin Franklin made the observation that this nation would be a “rising sun not a setting sun”. Living under this in...

  • Whatcha Readin'?

    Mar 30, 2023

by Sunday Dutro Our family was struck by the plague last month, which generally allows for more reading hours and is thus not to be feared. Unfortunately, it was the type of cold that makes your head too foggy to concentrate and we all spent way more hours in front of screens than books. Luckily for us it only lasted about four days and the kids were back to screaming “coming in hot!” while racing through the house and our evenings returned to calm and quiet reading time. In February I read 17 books (thanks to some of them being very short and...
