  • Hawks, Beckman win Plains Invite titles

    John Hamilton|Apr 19, 2018

Like drives down the fairway, chip shots out of the bunker and putts into the cup; so pass the days of our golfing lives. Coach Mike Bates said his Thompson Falls golfers made the most of their day in the Plains Invitational at Wild Horse golf course Saturday, as the Dylan Beckman-led boys battled to the team title, and the Elsie Brown-led Lady Hawks also played well. Beckman was crowned as the Plains Invite individual boys' champ by playing through with an almost even-par round of 73, while...

  • Fab Five golfers shine for Plains

    John Hamilton|Apr 19, 2018

They are Plains' self-proclaimed Fab Five, and they are coming to a golf course near you. New Plains golf coach Lisa Brown, who jokingly suggests that she is the assistant to her assistant Don Stamm (who once or twice actually head-coached the Plains team in the past), says she loves her new job guiding the Plains program. Five freshmen – Duncan Chisholm, Nick Gumm and Parker Flock with the boys, and Kaylee Cole and McKenna O'Lexey with the girls – are Brown's Fab Five, and she says they mak...

  • Trotters get ready for four games in only three days

    John Hamilton|Apr 19, 2018

PLAINS – High school softball is getting to be a more important thing in Plains all the time. Witness the spiffed-up playing facilities and the fact that the legendary voice of Plains sports, Randy Garrison himself, now has a platform from which to announce Trotter games from for proof. By all measures, it is now easy to see that the Trotters have reached the big-time of PHS sports, even if Garrison's announcing platform is currently an old red Ford truck backed up to the backstop (a more p...

  • Erik Digby runs to finish in rain-soaked Boston Marathon

    John Hamilton|Apr 19, 2018

When it came right down to it, there was no way that Erik Digby was not going to run in the Boston Marathon Monday, even if it meant running through a frigid, driving rainstorm that forced thousands of others off the course and out of the race. A physical therapist who operates out of offices in Thompson Falls and Plains in his everyday life, Digby, 49, who says he has now run a total of 12 marathons in his life (including one previous Boston Marathon in 2006), finished the m...

  • Set to host own Invite, TF thinclads stay busy

    John Hamilton|Apr 19, 2018

Don't look outside right now, it might be snowing or raining, but get ready Thursday for sunshine and warm temperatures as the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks will host their annual Thompson Falls Invitational at Previs Field, set to begin at 11 a.m. That is, if the current forecast holds and spring weather finally visits this little part of the world in northwestern Montana. Getting ready for their big homecoming meet last week, coach Trenna Ferris and the Hawks competed in two meets outside of this...

  • Plains enjoys large turnout

    John Hamilton|Apr 19, 2018

Bigger is better when it comes to track and field. The more athletes you have the better it is for so many people in so many different ways. Just ask Plains track and field coach Denis Montgomery, who says 25 Plains student-athletes, 14 boys and 11 girls, are out for this year’s team. “It has been a really fun spring, this is biggest track and field team Plains has had in years,” she said. “And the kids have been great, willing to try new events and working really hard in practice.” Making that work pay the most handsomely, senior Jessica T...

  • Devils are deep, talented

    John Hamilton|Apr 19, 2018

Track and field is alive and well in Noxon. Coach Matt Havens, who is joined this year in guiding the Red Devil thinclads by Scott Richardson, reports that he has 19 athletes (11 boys and eight girls) out this spring and that things have been going well so far. “Our boys are spread out across most of the events while our girls are challenging in each other in some of the same events,” he said. “And all of them are competing very well, getting mentally tougher with each meet.” Both Noxon squads competed in the Libby Invitational Saturday, with t...

  • Hawks keep improving

    John Hamilton|Apr 19, 2018

The continuing improvement process continues with the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks. Taking baby-bird steps through the first several weeks of the season, coach Jared Koskela says his Lady Hawk softball team is slowly learning to fly on the field of play as the season progresses. In their only action last week, the Lady Hawks dropped a doubleheader to Eureka in Thompson Falls Saturday, losing the first game 13-3 and the second 12-2 to the visiting Lady Lions. Koskela found solace in the fact that the Hawks are playing better softball each and every...

  • Keeping it Green

    Sanders County Recycling Staff|Apr 19, 2018

The saga on recycling continues. As of Feb. 15, Sanders County had to stop taking plastics for recycling, due to the high costs of shipping and the extremely poor market value. We recommended that residents continue recycling plastics, and directed efforts towards Republic Services and Pacific Recycling in Missoula. Unfortunately, as of May 7, Pacific Recycling will no longer be able to receive plastics. Republic Services will still take #1 PET or PETE, best known as the clear plastic used for soft drinks, water, juice, mouthwash, sports...
