  • Safety concerns force pool closure

    Annie Wooden|Apr 25, 2019

At the Thompson Falls City Pool, safety of visitors and staff is the top priority, Public Works Director Neil Harnett said. With that, the city has decided to keep the pool closed this year so necessary repairs can be done to the pool and surrounding deck area. "I can't see safely using the pool before this is fixed," Harnett stated. When city staff checked on the pool early this spring, they noticed that the concrete deck surrounding the pool had settled several inches. Harnett said he has...

"Hats and Purses and Shoes...Oh My!" is the theme for the local Historical Old Jail Museum's 2019 exhibit, which will hold its grand seasonal opening May 12, on Mother's Day, according to museum volunteers Teri Johnsen and Helen Meadows. • Our Viewpoint

    Apr 25, 2019

Recently, area schools have began implementing active shooter and lock down drills. The buzz around town has been interesting to listen to. Some take the stance that the drills are traumatizing students and scaring them. In contrast, some feel the drills are necessary to prepare a student in the event the unfortunate situation does occur. Regardless of what side of the fence you are on (or just riding the rail), school shootings are a modern-day reality. They are happening and there is no foreseeable solution to the problem. So, what do we do?...

  • Street Smart

    Blaine Blackstone|Apr 25, 2019

The Mueller investigation has been completed and his report submitted. By now, most Americans are aware of the outcome. In my opinion, it’s time for everyone to move on and build on all that President Trump has accomplished since his inauguration. However, it appears that the Democrats in Washington have no intention of letting this issue die. They didn’t get the outcome they were hoping for and they intend to keep pushing. I consider that wasted effort and a disservice to this country. Mueller...

  • 2019 Legislature Report

    Denley Loge|Apr 25, 2019

I hope everyone had a great Easter. I was able to come home for a few days and spend time relaxing on the tractor. Rain slowed some of my progress, but that is needed as was a short rest. This past week saw much action at the legislature as well as much tension. There was the infrastructure bill which passed that will bring some much-needed work around the state that has been put off year after year, greatly increasing need and costs. The key bill that did pass this past week was HB 658,...

  • Question of the Week

    Jay Simons|Apr 25, 2019

GEORGE CRABTREE, Plains – “Not too much. It’s hard trying to figure out what they are trying to pull now. With so many running, I think there is not much difference between the two parties.” MARY JORGENSEN, Thompson Falls and California –“I think there is cause for concern and slim pickings for good candidates.” LORI DALKE, Plains –“I think it is ridiculous! Picking a candidate among so many is just a guessing game. If they would worry more about how to serve the people than themselves or slinging mud about others, I would respect them more...

  • Exposing evil for what it is

    Apr 25, 2019

Dear Editor, I have found the column by Blaine Blackstone to be rather refreshing. I especially liked his views on the Hypocrites that have “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” While he happened to mention a few Democrats, he should have gone further. Most of Hollywood has this same disease. I mention disease because it has to be catching. Many college professors, school administrators and leaders of foreign countries also have caught the fever. But what started this sickness that is focused on one man? Could it have been the secret society of “ba...

    Ed Moreth|Apr 25, 2019

Traveling in space seemed to be kid stuff Saturday when a group of Plains students performed "Gulliver's Travels," a musical of explorer Gulliver lost in space with a broken spaceship. The 43 young actors, three student assistant directors, and two staff members of the Missoula Children's Theatre put on two performances of the musical Saturday afternoon at the Plains School gymnasium, where some 170 showed up for the play. The show was sponsored by the Plains Woman's Club, which has brought the...

  • Fishing Report

    Sanders County Ledger|Apr 25, 2019

Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) are a small tasty fish that can easily be caught in large numbers during spring spawning season. One of the best places to catch perch this time of year is Flathead Lake. Yellow perch seek shallow and relatively warm waters and begin spawning when the water temperature rises to between 35- and 65-degrees Fahrenheit. I’ve found that in Flathead Lake the action really takes off when the water temperature hits 45 degrees and the sun starts to regularly peek through the clouds. Each year for the last three years I...
