Sometimes you just have to follow your dreams. After driving by the closed Thompson Grill restaurant almost daily, Todd and Ronda Wakefield of Thompson Falls decided to make Ronda's dream of owning a restaurant come true. Ronda said she has wanted to own a restaurant since she first started working in the business when she was 13. The Wakefields recently purchased the property from Thompson Grill owner Judson Shively and plan to open Two Rivers Grille and Catering next month. The Wakefields...
The Blue Heron Karate Academy held its first tournament last weekend, which may have been the first ever karate tournament in Plains, said Jason Williams, the club's "sensei," and creator of the Plains-based club. Fourteen kids of the academy competed with each other at the Sanders County Fairgrounds pavilion Saturday in three different contests – Kata, ribbon drill, and chest sparring. Jasmine Trull, 11, finished as the grand champion in the 11-14-year-olds class in the chest sparring c...
Maybe it was the power of Gary that kept the dark clouds away. The first-ever Gary Thompson Invitational high school golf tournament was held under threatening skies at River's Bend Saturday and it seemed some strange force of golf and/or nature was working to keep conditions playable, even though the forecast was calling for rain and wind. Maybe it really was the goodwill power of Gary that kept that bad weather at bay because the tourney, formerly known as the Thompson Falls Invitational,...
There will always be a place for Randy Pirker at the Field of Dreams, and now everybody will be able to see where Pirk’s Place is each and every time the Lady Hawks play in Thompson Falls. The Thompson Falls High School administration has okayed the purchase of a colorful 50-foot banner with “Pirk’s Place” proudly printed on it, which will be unveiled prior to Saturday’s game with the visiting Anaconda Copperheads. The banner, which is printed in bright TFHS school colors, will be displayed on the outfield fence for every high school softball...
And then there was victory. Locked into the ultra-tough Western B-C division this season with hardly a break between games with quality teams, the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks stepped out of the division to play a couple of non-conference games in Anaconda Friday and promptly won for the first time this season. Coach Jared Koskela's Lady Hawks actually split a pair of games in Anaconda that day, falling 18-10 to Manhattan and then coming back to buck the Ennis Mustangs 14-9 for that elusive first...
Sanders County athletes enjoyed a great Top 8 meet in Eureka last Tuesday, April 23; and one standout from Noxon, triple jumping sensation senior Levi Brubaker, set a new season-best mark for all Montana high schools on the same day in the Russ Pilcher Top 10 meet in Missoula. Competing against athletes from all MHSA classifications in Missoula, Brubaker uncorked the longest triple jump recorded in Montana this year by going an incredible 45 feet even. His closest competitor, Zane Johnson of Cla...
It’s been a relatively slow fastpitch softball season for the Plains-Hot Springs Trotters so far. Things are about to speed up significantly for coach Michele Bangen and her base-stealing, hard-hitting Trotters as the Plains-Hot Springs girls face their biggest week of games of the season. After hosting Thompson Falls for a single game Tuesday in Plains (results of that game were not available at press time), the Trotters will host a pair of crucial doubleheaders Friday and Saturday against fellow Western B-C contenders Mission-Arlee-Charlo a...
There was thunder, there was lightning, it may have been a little bit frightening. And, oh yeah, there was precipitation too, some of it in solid, icy form, and a not-so-comfortable cold wind. It all came down in Whitefish Saturday at the annual ARM meet, and 11 teams went on to endure and live through the latest edition of the ARM in spite of Montana's erratic spring weather. "Yes, it was terrible weather," coach Trenna Ferris said. "There was rain, snow, hail and lightning at different times,...
The men of Wednesday night are back. The Wednesday Night Men’s League golfers attacked soggy River’s Bend with a par-breaking vengeance last week and Hagedorn Land Surveying (the quartet of Rick Hagedorn, Bernie Groshong, Ryan Ostwald and Paul Flemmer) shot the low team gross of 178, while the Whitefish Credit Union team (Chuck Manry, Rusty Sharp, Wally Gibe and Randy Hojem) used their handicap magic to arrive at the low team net of 131. Flemmer led the charge for the Hagedorn team with a straight-up 40 for low individual gross while Manry post...
Sparky’s Gutter Time took the early league lead as Shanks a Lot golfers shot the low team gross of 180 and Sparky’s duffers calculated out the low team net of 144 in Tuesday Night Men’s League action at River’s Bend last week. After more than 25 years, the Black Bear Inn in Thompson Falls is opening to the public. Daniel Moore and Marlaina Mohr purchased the Black Bear in April 2018. One year later, the first new business is opening. The Black Bear Coffee House will hold its grand opening Saturday, May 4, at 6 a.m. Since purchasing the building, the plan has always been to restore it in phases, Moore said, opening new businesses as each space is ready. First on the list is the coffee house and a hair salon. A coffee h...
