  • Ex-Trotters make splash at Gage meet in Bozeman

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

These Plains Trotters did not just graduate and give up the sport they love – they took their acts to the next level. Former Trotter track and field stars Kayla Holmes, Carley VonHeeder and Hailey Phillips, who led Plains to a string of state titles while in high school at Plains, all made their marks on the annual Tom Gage collegiate meet in Bozeman Friday with outstanding efforts. Holmes won the shot put with a best effort of 43 feet, 9.75 inches and also claimed fifth in the discus with a best spin and throw of 136-2. Von Heeder won the j...

  • Duncan and Kaylee heading for Seeley

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Duncan and Kaylee are going to the State C golf tournament. Plains High School golfers Duncan Chisholm with the boys and Kaylee Cole with the girls have qualified for next week’s State C tourney at Double Arrow Golf Course in Seeley Lake, coach Lisa Brown reports. The State C will be held Tuesday and Wednesday after practice rounds are allowed Monday, Brown said. Chisholm carded a 97 and Cole a 117 at the St. Regis Invitational at Trestle Creek last Thursday to lead Plains golfers in that event. Backing up Chisholm with the boys, Nick Gumm s...

  • Trotters test MAC, Florence

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

PLAINS – Most of the necessary softball skills can be taught, but you just can't coach confidence. Suffering through what coach Michele Bangen described as a crisis of confidence, Bangen and her Plains-Hot Springs Trotters dropped a doubleheader to visiting Florence in Plains Saturday, falling 6-3 in the first game and 16-6 in the second. In other action last week, the Trotters split with visiting Mission-Arlee-Charlo (MAC), winning the opener 6-3 but losing 12-6 in the nightcap Friday, and d...

  • Breakers blank Hawks twice

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

It seems awful late in the game to be adding new impact players into the mix, but that is what has happened in Western B-C softball the past few weeks. Turning from pretenders to contenders in an instant, the Loyola Sacred Heart Breakers put pitcher McKenna Bessette into the mix for the first time this season and she promptly went out and changed the complexion of the Western B-C league race. The daughter of Loyola coach Brian Bessette, McKenna, a transfer from Missoula Big Sky, just became eligible to play and immediately made an impact....

  • Locals compete in Haines Invite

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Plains, Noxon and Hot Springs track and field teams competed in the Kim Haines Invitational at Missoula Big Sky Saturday. Leading the way for Plains, Kylee Altmiller, who has already qualified for the State C meet in the javelin by exceeding the minimum standard, chucked the spear 112 feet, 4 inches to place second Saturday. Altmiller’s teammate with the Plains boys, Malachi Paulsen threw the javelin 148-4 to grab fourth place in the event on the other side of the meet. Hot Springs’ own wunderkind, freshman Katelyn Christensen, who has alr...

  • Athletes pre-qualify for State meets

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Although you can always earn your way to Montana state track and field meets by placing in the top six (or top five at the Class C level) at the divisional meets, there is a way to guarantee entry into the biggest meets of the season before the divisional meets even arrive. Taking advantage of the Montana state standards program, which allows athletes to pre-qualify for state based on exceeding preset marks and times, six of Sanders County’s finest thinclads have already earned berths into their respective state meets. From Thompson Falls, t...

  • Charlo favored in 14C meets

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

The District 14C track and field meet, set to be held in conjunction with the 13C meet at Missoula Big Sky Friday and Saturday, looks like it will be owned again by powerful Charlo teams on both sides. The real team races this week will likely be to see who can win second place to the mighty Vikings and Lady Vikings. “Charlo is the team to beat for the first place trophy,” Noxon coach Matt Havens said, “for both the boys and the girls this weekend.” In proof of their prowess, the Lady Vikings impressively finished second in team scoring...

  • Over the Hill Gang is back on the Bend

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

The Over the Hill Gang is back, and 41 self-described “old duffers” were out on River’s Bend Monday for the first round of season play. Proving that experience is golden, Mike Gilmore and Lana Nolen shot the low gross rounds of 43 and 51, while Carter Meyer and Barb Wooden factored in their miniscule handicaps to arrive at the low nets of 33 and 35. In other Hill highlights, Ron Beaty was closest to the pin in 2 on No. 1, Buck Adams put the long putts to bed on No. 2 and No. 6, Mike Normandin sank the long putt on No. 3, Don Hansen rolle...

  • Hagedorn shoots low as Whitefish CU leads

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Hagedorn Land Surveying shot the low team gross but Whitefish Credit Union held onto the league lead in Wednesday Night Men’s League action at River’s Bend last week. Rick Hagedorn, Ryan Ostwald, Paul Flemmer and Bernie Groshong put together a team round of 169 to give the Land Surveyors the low gross, while wily Wild Coyote duffers Gary Thompson, Scott Pardee, Jake Helvey and Howard Morkert factored in their handicaps to arrive at the low team net of 141. Ostwald carded the low individual gross of 38 and Jesse Mosher posted the low net of 32....

  • Double H Dirt puts hurt on Tuesday men

    John Hamilton|May 9, 2019

Double H Dirt put the hurt on the field in Tuesday Night Men’s League golfing action at River’s Bend last week. With Double H Dirt Works leader Scott Pardee shooting the low individual gross round of 39, and his dirty team members Ty Pardee, Jake Helvey and Tom Kirkland playing along, the Dirt brothers arrived at the low team gross of 179 to jump into the league lead. Kirkland also wound up with low individual net of 30 to add to Double H Dirt’s night of domination. When the dust had settled, Double H Dirt Works was in the league lead with 50.5...
