  • Ballots mailed for June 2 primary

    Shana Neesvig|May 14, 2020

They are sealed and delivered, and now awaiting official marking and return from registered voters in Sanders County. Primary election ballots were mailed out last Friday and are embarking on a far from normal election journey. County officials are offering multiple options for voters to submit ballots for this election. “We want to make sure people have an avenue to get ballots in, that is reliable,” Clerk and Recorder Nicole Scribner stated. “We want to put minds at ease that their ballots are counted. “Starting next week, in every precinc...

  • A TALE OF TWO PEAKS

    John Hamilton|May 14, 2020

When it comes to Priscilla Peak lookout, a change of scenery could do everyone, including the historic building itself, a lot of good. With a project designed to rescue and restore the time-worn Priscilla Peak lookout cabin that currently sits atop its relatively inaccessible perch in a state of disrepair, the U.S. Forest Service is considering plans to remove, refurbish and relocate the building to Driveway Peak, another prominent, historically significant, former fire lookout point in Sanders...

  • A TALE OF TWO PEAKS

    John Hamilton|May 14, 2020

In this tale of two lookouts becoming one, here is the other side of the story. Driveway Peak has been lonely on top for quite a while, without any historic buildings of its own for nearly 30 years; but that could soon be changing with the addition of the Priscilla Peak lookout structure. The future home of Priscilla and its history, which will be carried along to its new location, should only add substance to the long, colorful history that Driveway also has enjoyed from its scenic mountain...

  • Greenhouse is a family affair

    Shana Neesvig|May 14, 2020

As we dust the thin layer of bright-yellow pollen from our windshields each morning, three generations of the Totzauer family have been busy taking advantage of the season by offering a grand opening of Wood and Petal, a new retail greenhouse located at 2631 Highway 200 just north of Trout Creek. "Everyone this side of the bridge is ecstatic!" exclaimed Steve, son of 91-year-old Michael and 85-year-old Beverly. They opened their doors last week and have seen Noxon and Trout Creek customers aplen...

  • Our Viewpoint

    May 14, 2020

“They say the first 50 years of marriage are always the hardest.” That's what someone told my parents, Gene and Barb, last weekend. They will celebrate their 50th anniversary this Saturday, May 16. Celebrations, including what they will do to celebrate their golden anniversary, look a bit different these days. This Saturday was going to be branding day at the Wooden ranch, actually “Brandiversary” day. We had planned to have a big gathering and celebrate after the work was done with the cows. Our celebration will be on a much smaller scale,...

  • Montana Viewpoint

    Jim Elliott|May 14, 2020

President Trump doesn’t like the Post Office. It isn’t because he doesn’t like standing in line to buy a stamp, in fact I doubt if he has ever had to stand in line, let alone ever had to buy a stamp. No, he doesn’t like the Post Office because they do business with Amazon. A lot of business. He doesn’t like Amazon because it is owned by Jeff Bezos. He doesn’t like Jeff Bezos because Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post. He doesn’t like the Washington Post because they say nasty things about...

  • Board should trust leaders

    May 14, 2020

I’d like to address the nearly six-minute diatribe by a board member at the April 30 meeting. It was inappropriate. This time is set aside for public comment. Trustee Stough was speaking as a trustee because he referenced “we the board” over a dozen times. He should’ve never been acknowledged by Board Chair Pafford to give his rant. However, history has shown that this chair disregards rules when its favorable to him. It really became inappropriate (and should’ve been shut down by the chair) when the trustee called out a teacher by name. The...

  • TF council addresses parking, subdivisions

    John Dowd|May 14, 2020

The Thompson Falls City Council met Monday night to discuss several issues facing the town and returning operations to normalcy. The first item discussed was the town water bills, which for some community members have not been paid for two months. Last month the bills’ deadlines were extended to give people of the community some relief from the financial strain caused by COVID-19 regulations. However, the city cannot perpetually carry the costs of providing water, especially in such a small community. The council elected to allow Mayor S...

  • AN EERIE REMINDER

    Miriah Kardelis|May 14, 2020

It was almost 40 years ago that the Northwest was in the midst of a different kind of crisis. On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted in Skamania County, Washington, resulting in the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S. history. The eruption killed 57 people and decimated buildings and vegetation within a 230 square mile radius. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the glowing cloud of super-heated gas and rock debris that shot out of the...

  • County sale event canceled

    John Dowd|May 14, 2020

The Sanders County Yard Sale-ing event is considered by many to be one of the most anticipated events of the year. Given the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak and the fact that Sanders County has no yet-reported cases the event was officially canceled. According to Robin Hagedorn, with Thompson Falls Main Street Committee, who has been handling the yard sale for the last three years, the event’s main goal is to bring in people from all over the area, and from out of county, drawing business to the local shops and stores of S...

  • Tuesday night men play with new COVID-19 rules

    John Hamilton|May 14, 2020

Let’s talk about something else for a while. How about Tuesday Night Men’s golf? Playing through the ongoing pandemic hazard with some slightly altered rules of competition, the Tuesday Night Men’s League teed off on 2020 play last week while maintaining social distancing on the friendly greens and fairways of River’s Bend Golf Course. Bouncing that dimpled ball off their clubs the best, Easy Street Autoworks team members Dave Garr, Ron Beaty, Jens Jantzen and Rusty Haggard added up a 176 to win low team gross honors, while Big Sky Pantry...

  • Wednesday night players finally visit River's Bend

    John Hamilton|May 14, 2020

Wednesday night golf, why not? The Wednesday Night Men’s League met up at River’s Bend for the first time this season – at socially acceptable distances from each other, of course – and had some fun with it on opening night last week. The First Security Bank team of Mike Baxter, Ben Mummert, Mike Scharfe and Bill Nolen posted the low team gross (170) while the Ty’s team of John Mosher, Tyler Bates and Jesse Mosher (the fourth player’s score for Ty’s was determined by a blind draw) carded the low team net of 145. Ryan Ostwald led the Wednesday...

  • Love them? Leave them!

    May 14, 2020

Each spring, FWP receives calls from people who have picked up deer fawns, baby birds or other newly born wildlife.? It’s important to remember that Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks no longer accepts, holds or rehabilitates moose, deer, elk and most other animals. Diseases (such as Chronic Wasting Disease) are a concern when moving moose, deer and elk, and rehabilitating fawns and calves is often unsuccessful because the animals become quickly habituated to people.? If you see a baby animal, whether a goose or a grizzly, keep your distance and l...
