  • FREEDOM JOURNEY

    Shana Neesvig|May 21, 2020

"This is a solemn, but glorious hour," President Harry S. Truman announced over radio waves reaching across America. "I only wish that Franklin D. Roosevelt had lived to witness this day." The day was May 8, 1945, when Germans unconditionally surrendered during World War II; finalizing the reign of the Third Reich and the war itself. Over vast seas, in Czechoslovakia, 16-year-old Michael Totzauer was busy digging trenches for the German military. Now, 75 years later, he recalls May 8, 1945, V-E...

  • COVID-19 prompts travel changes

    Miriah Kardelis|May 21, 2020

Health officials continue to urge Americans to avoid all non-essential domestic travel to help slow of the spread of the coronavirus. As Gov. Steve Bullock outlines a plan to slowly reopen the state, much of which is already in effect, the 14-day self-quarantine for all out-of-state travel remains in place. The directive, which applies to both residents and nonresidents, allows for the exemption of travelers coming and leaving the state for work related purposes. As the weather gets warmer and we see summer on the horizon, many people who have...

  • Our Viewpoint

    May 21, 2020

To graduating seniors, life does not get much better than the moment the classwork stops. Most people will say that it is the moment they walk across the stage; however, in reality it’s when a senior realizes that for the first time in 12 years, they do not have to turn in any more homework. From this point on, that step is optional. Down the line college assignments, work projects and even helping their own children with their schoolwork is the next time any graduating senior will have any “homework” to think about, and all of these momen...

  • Street Smart

    Blaine Blackstone|May 21, 2020

The past two weeks have been pretty crazy in Washington, D.C.! Previously classified documents were declassified and released. Other documents that were never meant to see the light of day were discovered. Collectively, these documents have revealed a pattern of conduct, by a certain group in Washington, D.C., that should disturb all Americans… regardless of political affiliation. It’s impossible to discuss all of this in the space allowed so I’m going to summarize the best I can while issui...

  • FS should consider options

    May 21, 2020

After reading the Priscilla Peak articles in today’s Ledger by John Hamilton it is obvious that the decision to move the lookout to Driveway Peak has been cast in stone. I wonder how many government hours/dollars have been spent just to formulate the plan. I have enclosed my comment letter to the Project Leader “While I agree that the Priscilla Peak Lookout is quite unique and definitely deserves to be preserved, I feel quite sure that if the lookout was put back in the rental program today it would be quite popular. Although the lookout was se...

I’ve seen a lot of kids playing in the streets, riding bikes and spending more time together as a family. Another thing I hope has happened is that people have come to realize that they are not as self-sufficient as they might think they are....

The festival is awaited by locals and visitors from across the country. It is one of the largest events held in the county and takes all year to plan. It draws over 5,000 people a year to the area and brings in much needed business to the county. With the uncertainty of the coming months, the committee decided to cancel this year’s festival. Because of the y...

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, six years ago there were almost 73,000 centenarians in the United States and while the numbers are increasing, it is still a milestone, and one Plains woman just joined that elite club. Martha Vannice turned 100 years old last Tuesday. Her stepson, Wayne Vannice, and six friends gathered to sing "Happy Birthday" at her home, where she has lived for the last 49 years. "I've always said I wanted to make it to 100 years old and now I...

    John Dowd|May 21, 2020

Teachers are having to find increasingly clever ways to keep their students involved and to keep them from being let down. In Trout Creek, one such teacher decided to host a drive-through art show to feature her students' work from throughout the year. Maurita Crew, the lone teacher for the Trout Creek Adventist School, a small private school run out of Seventh Day Adventist Church, decided to do something a little different with her class. The idea sprouted from a canceled event that the school...

  • View from the Sidelines

    John Hamilton|May 21, 2020

Terry Glase is the most courteous courtesy photographer. Famous in the world of botany photography, Terry took that glorious picture of Priscilla on the front page of the Ledger last week several years ago while on autumn hike with a friend. Turns out that was just one of many mountain trail hikes that he has taken, and taken beautiful record of with his camera. Packing his trusty Nikon DSLR pretty much wherever he goes, and he goes to a lot of mountain places around here, Terry has photographically catalogued most of the wildflowers growing...

  • Many moms decide to 'bump' tobacco habit

Sandi Gubel, Sanders County Tobacco Prevention Specialist|May 21, 2020

Mothers-to-be should “bump” their tobacco habit. Before pregnancy is best, but the sooner they can, the better. Tobacco smoke contains a deadly mix of more than 7,000 chemicals, which contribute to heart disease, stroke, lung diseases and many kinds of cancer. Add a baby into the equation, and it isn’t just a mother’s health at risk anymore, but also their baby’s. Having a healthy baby is why medical professionals encourage pregnant women to stay smoke-free, or to become smoke-free. At 14%, our state has one of the highest smoking-while-pregnan...
