Kyle Lawson and Elizabeth Lampshire are in seventh heaven right now. How could they not be, given that they earned spots in this week’s State C meet at Laurel not by finishing in the top six as usual, but by finishing in the top seven. Given the fact that there are simply more teams out west in the Class C ranks this season than in other parts of the state, Montana High School Association officials decided that the only fair thing to do was to allow the top seven place-winners in each event to qualify for the State C, and Lawson and L...

  • Trotters win way to State B-C tourney

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

by John Hamilton Happiness is a Western B-C trophy. The icing on the cake is that along with that sparkling trophy, the third place shiner from last week's Western B-C softball tourney in Anaconda, coach Michele Bangen and her Plains-Hot Springs Trotters also receive a berth into the State B-C tournament. Hoping to have their cake and eat it too, the Trotters will open the State B-C tourney in Belgrade Thursday against Cut Bank, the No. 2 seeded team from the Eastern B-C, at 4 p.m. at the...

  • Tyler, Katelyn lead Hot Springs into State C meet

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Senior Tyler Carr and freshman Katelyn Christensen stood out for the Hot Springs Savage Heat team at the Western C divisional track and field meet in Missoula last week. The senior-freshman duo scored 14 points apiece for the Savage Heat boys and girls teams in Missoula, and will now be joined by freshman Kyle Lawson, who placed seventh in the 300 meter hurdles, in traveling to Laurel this week for the State C meet, to be held in conjunction with the State A at the Laurel Sports Complex Thursday through Saturday. Carr motored to second place...

  • Altmiller, Paulsen advance to State C meet

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

And a pair of spear-throwers shall lead them. The State C meet will be held in conjunction with the State AA meet at the Laurel Sports Complex Thursday through Saturday and coach Denise Montgomery's Plains track and field team will be represented there by standout javelin throwers Kylee Altmiller and Malachi Paulsen. A junior, Altmiller pitched the spear a career-best 119 feet, 6 inches to win third in the girls' javelin at the Western C meet in Missoula last week, while Paulsen, a senior,...

  • Hill players keep rouding the Bend

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Thirty-four is a good number, some of the Over the Hill gang players just might remember when that was how old they were. Or maybe not, after all that age may seem mighty long ago to some of the more should-we-say “experienced” golfers in Thompson Falls’ friendliest golfing league. Putting their chronological ages on this earth aside yet again, 34 of the as-young-as-you-feel Over the Hill duffers took another stab at River’s Bend this past Monday morning, and a good time was reportedly had by all. Leading the gang out on the Bend, Dave Garr nee...

  • Wednesday men take a breather

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

The Wednesday Night Men’s League played a mid-season round just for fun last week but, rest assured, the golfing war will resume in earnest the next time these players gather at River’s Bend. Making their trip around the Bend the most enjoyable of all, the Hagedorn Land Surveying team put together the low gross round of 28. In other Wednesday highlights, Randy Hagedorn put down the long putts on Nos. 3 and 6, Scott Sol was closest to the pin off the tee on No. 5, Ryan Ostwald hit the long drive on No. 9, and Dan Kier hit the other long dri...

  • Devil boys surge to 3rd in Western C

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Call it a Red Devil redux, a revival of fortunes in Noxon track and field. Led by super-jumper Levi Brubaker, who won the long and triple jumps in convincing fashion, in addition to running down fifth place in the 100 meters and joining up with Jared Webley, Edison VanVleet and Josh Baldwin to take fifth in the long and short relays, the Noxon boys teamed up to score 54 points and win third place in the Western C divisional in Missoula meet last week. Manhattan Christian won the Western C crown...

  • Brown ties for 4th in State B meet

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Ethan Brown is not just another good golfer, he is now a certified two-time All-State B performer for the Thompson Falls golfing team. Playing in the State B tournament at the Ranch Club in Missoula last week, May 14-15, Brown used two identical-score rounds of 77 to total 154 strokes and tie for fourth individually. A junior, Brown also earned All-State B honors, which requires a top-15 finish, in 2018. "Ethan always seems to find a way to peak at just the right time," coach Mike Bates said....

  • Feed-N-Fuel fires up, 'The Hammer' scores

    John Hamilton|May 23, 2019

Feed-N-Fuel threw fuel on the fire and Tom “The Hammer” Holleran put down the only chip-in to highlight action in Tuesday Night Men’s league play at River’s Bend last week. With Feed-N-Fuel golfers Steve Clark, Dave Petteys, Mike Gillmore and Doug Gunderson registering the low team net of 176, the dirty golf war between Double H Dirt Works and the rest of the league has been turned up a notch, although those Dirt Works players still lead league standing with 88.5 team points. Sitting in second with 85 points, Shanks a Lot shankers Dave Garr, Je...
