Thompson Falls' team of three made big noise at last week's State B golf tournament at Eagle Rock golf course in Billings. As Thompson Falls was without enough players for scoring teams, Megan Baxter, a senior, and little sister Ellie Baxter, a sophomore with the Hawk girls, and Kade Pardee with the boys were playing for individual honors only. And earn honors they did, and in Pardee's case almost did. Megan Baxter shot 88 the first day of the tourney and 93 the second to end up with a total of...
Jeanne Holleran and Tina Wheeler shot the low team gross of 109 and Liz Morkert and Lana Nolen the low net of 83 to highlight play in last week’s Women’s League golf action at River’s Bend. Connie Brown shot the low individual gross of 48 while Wheeler collected low-net honors with her well-adjusted round of 35. The team of Brown and Jan Thompson remains atop the Women’s League leaderboard and Holleran and Wheeler are now in second place. In individual hole play, Brown was closest to the pin in 4 on No. 2 and rolled in the long putt on No. 3,...

Noxon High School will be well represented at the State C track and field meet in Missoula this week. Making sure that the Red Devils will be represented, the one-two punch of MacKenzie Morgan and Emily Brown with the girls, and Cade VanVleet and Jared Webley with the boys, led the Noxon girls to 45 team points (and sixth place in team scoring) and the boys to 18 points. Morgan was Noxon’s only official champion, winning the 3200 meter run, in addition to placing second in the 800 and 1600, and third in the 400. Besides Morgan, Brown made it to...
Fillies and colts this season, they will return as fully mature Trotters and Horsemen next year. At least that is what coach Denise Montgomery is counting on. Led by Mason Elliott, who won fourth in the 300 meter hurdles, Plains track and field teams competed gamely in the Western C divisional meet in Missoula last week. Nicholas Hill, Joseph Martin, Brenden Vanderwall, Jaelyn Carr, Adelle Ercanbrack, Alexis Helterline and Peyton Wasson, who along with Elliott all competed in Missoula, should all return next year to form the core for the 2022...

In honor of Memorial Day, I am reminded of the contributions and sacrifices made by three local veterans. Although Memorial Day recognizes veterans who have passed away – either during military service or later in life – I'm going to include a living veteran who has more than earned our appreciation for his service and sacrifice for our country. First, I want to talk about the Veterans Memorial, which is part of the newly renovated Ainsworth Park. The memorial is the result of several years of...

Big Bull Sports is ready to open in its new location on Main Street in Thompson Falls. Tom Kirkland, owner of the sporting goods store, said he will re-open the business Tuesday, June 1, at 1013 Main Street. Kirkland bought Big Bull Sports in 2015 and operated it out of a building off of Highway 200 between Thompson Falls and Trout Creek. The new location was previously the office space of Realty-Northwest, and in the past was home to First State Bank (before it changed to First Security Bank). Since purchasing the Main Street building,...
