AEDs, or Automated External Defibrillators, are advanced pieces of equipment that can now analyze cardiac rhythms and automatically deliver electric pulses to stimulate the functions of the heart. With technological advances, AEDs today can be easy to use and can function autonomously, without the aid of a trained professional. According to Lynn Lanzoni, the K-9 drug dog handler for the Sanders County Sheriff's Office, AEDs can be an important piece of equipment for saving lives. Lanzoni said...
After a three-year hiatus, Plains Day returned this year, proving the successful event was missed by community members. "The event was spectacular," said Connie Foust, a Plains Day coordinator. "We worked hard on this and we received a lot of positive feedback from the community. Even Mineral County commented on how patriotic it was." People filled the streets as they enjoyed a day full of activities that took place along the greenway on Railroad Street. Around 50 vendors were set up, ranging...

Seventy-eight teams - one from Belt, Montana, 299 miles away - participated in the 5th Annual Wildhorse Shootout 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. It was the biggest showing they've had, some 20 teams more than 2019, said Erika Lawyer, one of the coordinators of the event. Lawyer also estimated there...

The annual e-waste event, sponsored by Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Sanders County Solid Waste, collected more than four tons of electronics over the weekend. Kathy Conlin with Sanders County coordinates the event and said that people were lined up for the...
In last week’s Question of the Week, we asked what type of activities people would like to see in the area. Several said live music. A variety of musical talent has been visiting The Rex recently. On Thursday, Tylor and the Train Robbers, a band from Boise, played at The Rex Theater. Though it wasn’t a packed house, the band members played their hearts out and made each of those 70 people feel like it was a sold-out show. Their energy and storytelling was amazing. They had people dancing up front and got a standing ovation. When it was ove...
“That few in public affairs act from a mere view of the good of their country, whatever they may pretend; and though their actings (sic) bring real good to their country, yet men primarily considered that their own and their country’s interests were united and so did not act from a principle of benevolence. “That fewer still, in public affairs, act with a view to the good of all mankind.” That was written in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin, and as you can see, not much has changed. Nor had much ch...

To honor the days of the old west and the history of the mountain man, a local group has started up. They call themselves the Clark Fork Valley Traditional Black Powder Group. It was started in late August 2020 by Richard Cotte. Along with others in the county, Cotte wanted to find a way to get together locally with those who share an interest in traditional firearms and the history surrounding them. “A lot of the importance is to keep interest in the hobby alive,” said Cotte, “a lot of the c...

Big Bull Sports has reopened at its new location at 1013 Main Street in Thompson Falls. The grand opening was June 1, and owner Tom Kirkland said the day saw a great turnout. "It is amazing how much changes just through a new location," said Kirkland. According to Kirkland, many outdoor supply stores in the country are experiencing poor product availability this year, and that is why he is sticking to "the bread-and-butter" products. Currently, Big Bull Sports carries typical outdoor sporting eq...
Thunderstorms during Thursday evening last week caused several small forest fires that local crews responded to Friday morning. One fire north of Plains about three miles was contained at half an acre. Others reported in the Plains-Thompson Falls Ranger District, including one below Eddy Peak that was visible from Thompson Falls, were a tenth of an acre or less. The CSKT Division of Fire responded to a fire east of Paradise on the north side of the Flathead River. Approximately 22 personnel and a helicopter were on the scene of the fire, which...

At the Plains Day Dance Party Saturday evening, getting down didn't refer to boogeying - it was getting down, as low as a person could get without hands, knees or butt touching the ground. It took only about 20 minutes to come up with a winner in the "tall" category of the annual limbo contest. For 22-year-old Jubal Ryan, it took a crab-like walk with knees turning in ways that would make most people cringe to get below the stick at 26 inches above ground to become this year's limbo champion. Ry...
The Rex Theater was filled with the sounds of storytelling last Thursday evening when Tylor & the Train Robbers took the stage at the historic Thompson Falls venue. The Boise-based band played for two solid hours and welcomed Thompson Falls alum Tanner Laws as their opening act. Laws warmed up the crowd of about 70 with his original songs, including one that he finished writing the lyrics for while traveling Thursday from Missoula, where he now lives. Randy Roberts, who coordinated the...

During the meeting, Scully mentioned that Thompson Falls is eligible for around $1.8 million of funding through the program. These funds can be used to hire new staff, create new space for ed...
There is a certain draw to archery, beyond the bullseyes and the shooting for score. Archery may not be for everyone, but it is a sport that tends to end up drawing in a lot of folks, and being a constructive hobby, especially for those who like to take their game into the hunting season for added bonus points. What's more, it can become a bonding experience between like-minded individuals from all walks of life. Taking advantage of dry albeit slightly windy weather at times, the Montana State...
by John Hamilton A game to remind everyone of what football is supposed to be – a whole lot of fun. Five Thompson Falls Blue Hawks – Cody Burk, Roman Sparks, Kade Pardee, Lucas Andersen and Will McPherson – and one Plains Horsemen – Tucker Foster – received the chance to play one more high school football game at the Bob Clevery Class C 8-Man All-Star game in Butte Saturday and had a blast with it, undoubtedly leaving all six Sanders County senior gridders glad that they played this one last gam...
