Blue Slide Road is open to all traffic following stabilization work. At the beginning of May, a section of the road was closed after heavy rain and snowmelt caused Cougar Creek to overflow and wash out gravel beneath the pavement. Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) worked to quickly open the road to one lane of traffic. Since then, contractors have been working to stabilize the road, and MDT reported that Saturday morning conditions were safe enough for motorists to travel on both...
It was standing room only at the Plains Town Council meeting at City Hall last week, when council members went through the second reading of the proposed Community Decay Ordinance, which is what the town is now calling it. Rarely is the courtroom filled during monthly council meetings, but it was packed with nearly 50 people that stretched into the hall. The public works committee and the council has been working on the proposed ordinance for months, but few people have taken an interest. At the...

The work was part of a $600 Challenge Cost Share Agreement that the horsemen club received from the...
We have Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Armed Forces Day. There are many holidays that recognize those who have served our country. We honor them, we display flags, we light fireworks, we have a cookout with family and friends. Every once in awhile, we stop the fanfare and think about the sacrifices of our service men and women. We read about the struggles of the military and veterans often. Struggles abroad as they serve, and when they come back home. Recently, we watched the Amazon film Last Flag Flying, in which three V...
Remember that quaint little notion called usury? If you’ve ever borrowed money or used a credit card you might want to refresh your memory. Basically, usury is the practice of charging interest on a loan, but over the centuries the meaning morphed to charging excessive interest on a loan. People actually used to worry about stuff like that. Of course, the concept of “excessive” might vary, but originally excessive was defined as anything above zero. That’s going back a while, maybe 3000 years....

The Plains Town Council meeting last week went for nearly three hours, mostly because of the public comment period for a proposed ordinance, which took up more than half of the time. Still, the council was able to vote on six measures on the agenda, including most of the new proposed Community Decay Ordinance. The Junked Vehicles section was tabled until next month’s meeting. Gary Revier, on behalf of the Plains Golf Association, asked for the council’s approval to establish a seven-spot RV park at the golf course. Revier told the council the...
A truck that was hauling cattle overturned pulling off of Highway 200 W just outside of Trout Creek, June 6th. The driver of the truck was in good condition but three of the cows in the load were killed. The truck was one of three traveling to a field owned by Charlie Gardner that was being rented out. They were a quarter mile away from their destination when the...

by Justin Harris When collecting trash to help the environment, it seems counterintuitive to celebrate when the total accepted tonnage goes down – but it is actually a good sign. The Annual Sanders County E-Waste Collection event was held last weekend with residents, businesses and organizations bringing their unwanted, outdated electronics to the site for proper disposal. It was reported 4,200 pounds of waste was hauled away, which is about half the weight that was collected last year. Organizer Kathy Conlin attributes that to participants b...
