In Thompson Falls, Tony Bierwagen is the face of competitive archery shooting. The long-time president of the Thompson Falls Archery Club and the current tournament director for the Montana Archery Association, Bierwagen doesn’t just talk the talk about competitive target archery, he continues to walk the walk as well, maintaining his edge by continuing to participate in shoots across Montana and elsewhere. Bierwagen has had a couple of busy months shooting already this year, between tournaments and practicing regularly in Thompson Falls, f...
Rain, rain, go away, the Over the Hill gang wants to play. Over the Hill golfers teed off in the rain Monday for their weekly tour around River’s Bend, but it wasn’t long before that rain gave way to sunshine and brightened everyone’s day. It was almost like the golfing gods were smiling once again upon the friendly players of the Over the Hill gang. Playing through in the clean fresh air produced by the showers, Gary Thompson and Lana Nolen went out and shot the low men’s and women’s gross rounds, while Jens Jantzen and Barb Wooden captured...
Shanks a Lot won the battle but Double H Dirt Works won the war. Shanks a Lot golfers Jens Jantzen, Dave Garr, Ron Beaty and Charlie Hooten posted the low gross of 178 in Tuesday Night Men’s League play at River’s Bend last week but it was not quite enough as Double H Dirt Works held on to the lead and won the first half of league play. The Shanksters big day of play gave them 166.5 team points on the last night of the first half, just short of Double H Dirt’s final tally of 168. Sparky’s Gutter Time – Kevin Sparks, Tom Hollearn, Doug Czer...
Wednesday’s winners are the wily Wild Coyotes – at least for now. The Wednesday Night Men’s League wrapped up the first half of season play as Wild Coyote golfers Gary Thompson, Dave Petteys, Scott Pardee and Howard Morkert teamed up to shoot the low team net of 146 and clinch the title for the first half. At the conclusion of league play later this summer, the Wild Coyotes will then face the second-half winners (providing they don’t win that, too) in a playoff. First Security Bank players Mike Baxter, Bill Nolen, Ben Mummert and Michael...
The long dog days of summer are not quite here yet but, as a sports fan, I am already beginning to feel a little deprived. After all, with the NBA and NHL seasons concluding last week, we have now entered that uncomfortable time of the year when there is no basketball, no football and no hockey to watch; all we are left with to watch on TV is regular season major league baseball. Or, at this early point in the MLB season, snoozing through it. It’s kind of like a dead zone of sorts out there right now with a dearth of watchable sports available...
A Thompson Falls family who live north of town had a unique interaction with a black bear. The Nygaard family had black bears join their 4-H pigs in the livestock pen earlier this week. The bear was captured on a game camera set up by the Nygaards' neighbor, Gary Backus. The bear was seen eating the pig food in the pen on Sunday. The family called Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) bear management specialist Kim Annis, who installed electric fencing around the livestock pen on Monday. Annis...
