Roughly 30 years ago, Sanders County runners participated in an international run to promote world peace. Last Saturday, the 23rd international Peace Run came through the area once again, spreading hope and encouraging world peace, harmony and friendship. The flaming torch travelled 90 miles from Murray, Idaho, to Dixon, Montana, while friends connected hands throughout the journey. Runner aficionado Sarah Naegeli collaborated with Peace Run to organize the event. She was joined by Teresa Nelson...
It was a first for the state park in Thompson Falls, and for many youth in attendance. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) held the first annual Kids Fishing Day at the small pond in the park. "We were very fortunate with the weather," said fisheries biologist Jason Blakney on the overcast morning, "perfect fishing weather – we didn't get rained on and it wasn't too hot." Blakney, other FWP representatives and Forest Service personnel were on site to assist kids in finding a passion for f...

It looks like another dog fight is brewing in the Wednesday Night Men’s League, and it will be fought out on the fairways and greens of River’s Bend over the next several weeks. You have to get up pretty early in the morning if you are going to be part of the Over the Hill golfing gang. Okay, you really don’t have to get up that early, but you do have to show up for the Monday mid-morning tee time with a smile on your face and enough clubs in your bag. Those are really the only prerequisites. Showing up with smiles on and clubs in hand, this area’s famously friendly golfing league got after it again on River’s Bend this past Monday morning as 36 of Sanders County’s finest canvassed the scenic course in search of bird...
Students from the third through fifth grades showed off their skills at a four-day basketball camp that was held in the high school gym. High school basketball coaches Jake Mickelson and Doree Thilmony coached the players on fundamentals and sharpening their skills with dribbling and shooting drills. The players also had the opportunity to compete against each other in shooting drills and a 3-on-3 tournament. Aubrey Baxter was victorious in the Hot Shot shooting competition and the free-throw...
Nine artists are showing their work at Clark Fork Valley Hospital for the third quarter Art on the Walls exhibit, which opened last week. "I'm always impressed by the art and feel lucky to know some of these artists personally," said Tonya Revier, the hospital's marketing coordinator, at the artists' reception last Thursday. The reception included musical entertainment by pianist Rachel Huenink and refreshments prepared by the hospital's culinary department. The artwork along Main Street...
Independence Day, my favorite summer holiday. Friends, fireworks, water fights, cornhole, and of course a barbeque. For me, good food is a must for a good celebration. This year, and for the past several years, we will be celebrating with friends. It's always a great time, and the food is always amazing. I'm sure I'll eat too much and I'll probably even "cheat" a little (who can say no to a red, white and blue Rice Krispy treat? Not this girl). To save myself from having too many delicious...
A lone singer sat on the Rex Theater stage Saturday and strummed his guitar to a nearly empty theater. Sharing his traditional-style country songs, the man also brought with him some priceless stories of his run- ins with music legends. Old-time country fans missed a rare gem in the performance and anecdotes of Mike Beck. Beck has been in the country music game for a long time. He recalls the days when one could pack a guitar to the Bakersfield, California, VFW Hall on a Sunday and join the likes of Merle Haggard or Buck Owens. For being of...
