  • Board passes Paradise sewer levy

    Ed Moreth|Jul 2, 2020

The community of Paradise became one step closer to getting a first time sewer system after the Sanders County Sewer District at Paradise passed the resolution for a special assessment at a town meeting at the Paradise Center late Monday evening. It took less than 20 minutes for the four board members to vote on the assessment, but the meeting beforehand was heated and took more than three hours. The purpose of the meeting was to go over the written protest letters from those who were against...

  • Noxon fireworks show to go on

    John Dowd|Jul 2, 2020

For the first time in 45 years, the Noxon Bicentennial community park committee has canceled the Fourth of July celebrations due to COVID-19 regulations. In a committee meeting held in May, the members decided not to host their annual festivities. “A majority felt it could be very difficult to hold their regular activities while complying with regulations and guidelines,” said committee member Joyce Hilt. Fortunately, the committee found that the annual fireworks display could still be hosted, as people could follow social distancing guidelines...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Jul 2, 2020

As we witness Black Lives Matter and All Lives Matter movements, the removal and destruction of monuments honoring persons who played a weighty role in U.S. history, removal of flags that display the Confederate battle emblem and civil rights protests, events in American history seem to be reoccurring. The divide felt throughout American society is a reassuring reminder that history indeed repeats itself. Although the proceedings are different, the messages are the same. As we come upon the Fourth of July holiday weekend, celebrating the...

  • Street Smart

    Blaine Blackstone|Jul 2, 2020

There’s been a great deal of discussion about racism lately so let’s visit that topic a little differently. I’ll explain from my perspective. Unlike many who are offering their opinions, I didn’t just visit or read about racism in a particular area…I lived and worked in such areas nearly my entire life! Before I continue with this true saga, I want to point something out. Somewhere along the line, the term “racism” has come to mean “White people against everyone else.” I can comfortably state...

  • Modern Homesteader

    Miriah Kardelis|Jul 2, 2020

As the weather hit 90 this last week, I found myself walking out to the chicken coop more than usual to check on the girls. A general rule in the chicken keeping community, is that hot weather is harder on a flock than cold weather is. Heat stroke for chickens in a real thing, and I’m grateful to say I haven’t lost a chicken to this so far in my homesteading venture. It’s not the easiest part of the job, tending to your flock of ladies on a hot, sunny day. However, when I see my chickens panting, I make sure to do everything in my power to co...

There are a few tips to help make life a little easier for your pets once the fireworks start. Never use fireworks around your pets. “While exposure to lit fir...

  • County officials meet to discuss fair

    Ed Moreth|Jul 2, 2020

The Sanders County Commissioners called a special meeting between the Sanders County Board of Health and the Sanders County Fair Commission at the fairgrounds pavilion last week to discuss plans for preventing the fair from causing a coronavirus outbreak. Members of the fair board are presently working on a draft that contains such plans, but some feel the plan is too vague and does not address enforcement practices with regard to COVID-19 guidelines. Board member Randy Woods, chairman, Jim...

  • Radio enthusiasts participate in field day

    John Dowd|Jul 2, 2020

The radio has long been the symbol of communication. Ever since its invention in the mid 1890's, radio has played an important role in basic operations around the world. Last Saturday locals from the Clark Fork Valley Amateur Radio Club participated in a worldwide event, showcasing the communicative power of radio. The Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) Field Day is an annual event that opens the world up to communicate through radio waves. Much of the basic equipment that was used Saturday...

  • CFVRC hosts its own Missoula Marathon

    John Hamilton|Jul 2, 2020

If you can't be there and run in it, you can be here and run in it instead. Not wanting to be denied their 2020 appearances in the Missoula Marathon, which like most every other sporting event so far this spring and summer has been canceled during the COVID-19 pandemic, 13 local runners from the Clark Fork Valley Running Club (CFVRC), ran the race virtually instead. The competitors lined up at 8 a.m., Saturday, on a course set up along country roads north of Plains in the Lynch Creek area. Most...

    John Hamilton|Jul 2, 2020

There will be an American Legion baseball team in Sanders County, maybe not in 2020 but definitely in 2021. That’s the word from the new Clark Fork Valley Riverdogs and their head coach Jon Zigler. • Ron's Running Dinos claim first half crown

    John Hamilton|Jul 2, 2020

In the end, Ron’s Running Dinos simply could not be caught. The reptilian, club-wielding duffers, most commonly seen at River’s Bend during stretches of nice weather over the last several decades, Ron’s Running Dinos did not win the day in last Wednesday Night Men’s league play at River’s Bend, but they did claim the league’s first half championship. Hagedorn Land Surveying golfers Ryan Ostwald, Randy Hagedorn, Paul Flemmer and Bernie Groshong shot the low team gross of 172, while Jesse Mosher, John Mosher, Steve Fairbank and Rusty Sharp led Ty...

    John Hamilton|Jul 2, 2020

Ty Pardee led last Tuesday’s parade around River’s Bend with a 41 and Mike Thilmony factored in his handicap to arrive at the low individual net of 31. In hole play, Pardee was closest to the hole in 3 on No. 2, Rusty Haggard ran in the long putt on No. 3, Jens Jantzen was the man on the Par-3s, hitting the shots closest to the pin on both No. 5 and No. 8, Rusty Sharp sho...

  • Biologist attacked by grizzly

    Jul 2, 2020

A biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) was attacked by a grizzly bear in the Centennial Valley Wednesday morning. The individual suffered serious bite wounds but is expected to recover fully. The USFWS employee was working on a sage grouse monitoring project on Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge about a mile west of Elk Lake. The biologist heard a noise in the sagebrush and turned to see two grizzly bears in a close-encounter situation, approximately 80 to 100 yards away. One bear stood up, and the other charged the...
